    Great video as always Melinda. When I hear the name Tommy James & The Shondells, "Crystal Blue Persuasion" is in the forefront. I have always loved that song. Keep up the great work/input. You are so passionate about the music, which shines through. Be well.

      @@MelindaMurphy Tommy James was on an episode of Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast years ago, it was fun to hear him have an uncensored chat about those days (and to hear Gilbert sing a Tommy James song in that unmistakable voice!). It shouldn't be hard to find the episode.

    These old analog presses despite being well worn can still sound excellent. Thanks Melinda, great topic and very brave of you to branch out as a youtuber to not mint copies. I just picked up a 1961 press of Time Out by Dave Brubek for $3. I was worried because it looked rough but surprisingly its very quiet and sounds great! Well worth the risk. No need to pay $50 for the newer press from Acoustic Sounds.

      I recently found a couple of Dave Brubeck LPs at a nearby thrift store that looked a bit beat up as well, but I put them through the Spin-Clean, and they sound pretty great. Still scratched up, but at least they didn't sound like they were played with an old grammophone needle for 30 years.

    I'm with you on Tommy James and The Shondells. I got to see him about 10 years ago at an outdoor concert near the river on a wonderful summer night. I'd expected his playing and singing to have diminished with age, but what a surprise. The energy crackled through the crowd like electricity. When he got to "Mony Mony" - it got really crazy. I'm really glad you got to enjoy a legend, as well. I'll never forget turning the car radio up full blast on "Draggin' the Line" in a convertible travelling from Oregon to SE Idaho summer of '70. It's the main thing I remember about that trip!

    Great video! Melinda, this video inspired me to take a chance. For a long time, I’ve been trying to find a copy of Mel Brown’s “I’d Rather Suck My Thumb”, but it’s a very pricey record, I found one online that was rated 7 out of 10 for $20. We will see…. Yes, sometimes I’ll take a chance buying a dirty vinyl record. But most of the time I Don’t. It helps me save money. The other month, I bought a UK pressing of a Gong record that someone cleaned with an ultrasonic cleaner. He said it still had some background noise on the quieter parts. Since it’s not easy to find, I took a chance at $30. After I cleaned it with the Vinyl Styl Deep Groove washer (goat hair) it was quiet with no pops or crackles. I got very lucky. Speaking of the Verve reissues, Third Man Records, and yes Mel Brown, I got the reissue of Mel Brown’s “Chicken Fat” pressed at Third Man, here in Detroit. Oh my gosh, it was filthy. My dad got one too and said it was the dirtiest new record he has ever seen. But after a good clean, it sounded fantastic! Not only did mine have paper from the paper sleeve, but there was hair and other debris on it. Completely horrible! That Sorcerer album looks impressive. I might have to buy it.

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's frustrating to get a record covered in dirt but I clean my records anyway so it's not that big of a deal. I need to pick up Chicken Fat. What a crazy title for an album. Lol. Thank you and take care.

      @mlblue5355 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MelindaMurphy I will let you know how the record turns out. I’ll do a serious clean on it before I play it. Yes, I highly recommend “Chicken Fat”. Mel Brown’s guitar playing has a humor to it. He was a session guy before doing his own albums. I just learned about him last year. But sadly his albums are difficult to find. I’m happy Verve and Third Man Records did a repress of “Chicken Fat”.

    • @mlblue5355
      @mlblue5355 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MelindaMurphy I got the Mel Brown album in the mail today. It looked bad, but after cleaning it definitely improved. There’s a couple spots that has skip repeats. Normally I wouldn’t deal with an album like that, but the music is incredible! I’ll have to show you some pictures. If I can’t improve this album with more cleaning with the vinyl styl deep groove washer and the toothpick technique, I’ll either buy one at a $60 on discogs, or invest in an ultrasonic cleaner.

    The Beatles are hands down my favorite band. I was able to get Mono copies of Introducing the Beatles and Rubber Soul US original pressings. Both are so so copies (vinyl and covers) but I’m hoping I can upgrade down the line, I just enjoy knowing I have them. My favorite word… was it was cheap. Hiya Melinda, interesting topic for a video. When I'm looking at used vinyl in a shop, usually charity shops in my case, I do always pay good attention to the condition of both the cover and the vinyl, but sometimes an album pops up somewhere that is so hard to find these days and when you see it you just gotta have it. I have a few albums in my collection where the covers are not great, a little torn near a corner here and there, but the vinyl is absolutely great and sounds very good and if an album I find has the cover coming apart at the seems that doesn't even bother me because with a little bit of glue it can always be fixed and stuck back down. It was interesting to hear you talking about your memories of playing your mother's records and how it got you into Tommy James and the Shondells. They are a great band. I think the big hit Mony Mony is the well known song they'll always be best known for, but they recorded many other great songs. I think my favourite one has to be Crimson And Clover. That is a fantastic song. I will always have fond memories of growing up listening to Elvis Presley and the Beatles. My dad is a big Elvis fan and we would always listen to his Elvis records and I really loved his music. He still has them all to this day. My favourite album was and still is Raised On Rock. I can remember putting that on and thinking what a great album that is. My mum's favourite was the Beatles and she had a very good reel to reel tape machine, a Grundig I think it was, and she had a few of the albums on tape. My favourites were Sgt Pepper and Abbey Road and they are still my favourite albums now. I think it's great to have those memories of growing up as a kid listening to the music your parents were listening to and I really believe that's how I got into Elvis and The Beatles in a big way. Those memories always stay with you. I always love your videos and hearing you talking about your collection and your passion for music and vinyl. All the best Melinda and stay safe. Take care!

    Hey Melinda, another interesting video. 😊 Curious about your Traffic LP. I've got 2 here - "Traffic" and "Traffic 2" but the second one has the same front cover as yours. I'm wondering if yours is identical or a hybrid of my 2 albums which wouldn't surprise me as that was common in the USA.
    With your "Revolver" you should be able to tell from the inner sleeve about its vintage. If it's a white printed inner, then there should be a date with a month/year at the bottom either in the centre or at the bottom-right corner. I have one from around 1972 with a 'company' inner sleeve but mine doesn't have the HTM initials in the inner groove. Mine's a -2/-2 pressing.
    I agree with you about plain paper inners in new records.🙄 I've now taken to adding new poly inner bags inside those sleeves. I did that with the Stones Mono coloured vinyl box among others. It's disappointing considering the price charged on new records. Polylined inners should be standard. 😊 Love your work as always. Take care ❤️😘
    PS Here's a link to a video I made about the poly bags for my Stones box. Hope it helps 🤔🙂

    In 1991 I too found an exact same copy of the second Traffic album you have (even same United Artists label), with everything intact. It was just 50 cents at a Salvation Army in Florence, Oregon (at that time I started to buy vinyl because it was cheap, as you know everyone was getting rid of their vinyl for CDs by that time). The cover wasn't great but that one is still in my collection to this day. Tommy James is great! I hear his show on 60s Gold on XM radio in the car, and he has such a wide variety of styles in his music, and so many great artists cover his songs too. When I see an old beat up cover I always double check the vinyl, because they are often better than expected. I have found a few awesome sounding records that literally had no inner sleeves at all, and one turn with the velvet brush made them like new. I think we need a better system of grading records, because "VG" is such a wide range in practice that it's almost useless as an indicator even if it's a reputable person grading it.

    • @MelindaMurphy

    You’ve convinced me to rethink my prejudice. I don’t even look at the vinyl if the cover is rough, but now I will take a look. The only example I can think of where I had a win is a $5 purchase of Mike Oldfield Ommadawn which had a great vinyl quality inside a poor cover. Thanks for opening up my mind again to the possibility of a cheap buy with a positive outcome.

    I assembled a complete early press copy of The Who's Tommy once and one of the sources I used came from a used record store's $1 bin. One of the two records was trashed but one was near mint and it had the booklet in good shape. I did similar once with a mono Capitol Sgt. Pepper. I found a decent copy at a thrift but with a trashed cover and then later for $10 at an antique mall found a copy with a cover that was a little scuffed but far better than what I first had plus it had the insert.

    I'm a Vinyl Storage Solutions dual pocket resealable flap nerd. My trashy covers don't get one. Standard baggie for those. Do you use the good covers on your ringwear records? Sometimes it seems pointless to use a prime outer on a trashed cover. But it's nice to have things look uniform. This is why I have a damaged vinyl collector psyche....

Original pressings of old Blue Note, Prestige, Impulse, Riverside, etc., albums are all stupid rare. What a thrill and pleased you got to see Tommy James and the Shondells. I so love the songs and albums in the day have an album or two vinyls and his hits on cassette, Recorded from the 45s I use to have of his, Couple of cds I will mention in a few moments. I know how great he is and saw him when he came for July 4th holiday in 95 celebration back to his home town where he was born and openers for him and the Shondells were Martha and The Vandellas & Gary Lewis and The Playboys I had camera getting pics of Gary Lewis and his band and Tommy James and his band performing , It was free show on the main street in the city downtown.
    I got a EP single CD of tracks from his audio movie cd In The Big City album. The EP Has tracks of "Give It All" 3 versions of the song and song "Angels and Strangers", I bought the EP there and then pic of him signing CDs, And I went up to have him sign mine personally for me. Thanked him for a great show. He is such a delightful man and soul with great songs over the years, At a store I had gotten Tommy James & The Shondells Greatest Hits LIVE! -Recorded Live at the Bitter End NYC. I'm also not sure if my UK Revolver is from '73 or '76. I bought it as '73 but added as '76 on my discogs. Mine is also a Harry Moss pressing, which tend to be the best. One tip that helps to identify is the vinyl thickness. Tends to be thinner from '76 onwards due to the oil crysis.

    Great to see 'Traffic' in any condition, Melinda. My copy of that (most treasured) album, I showed about a year ago on my channel. Sadly, my copy had been nibbled by mice (I kid you not) so a section of the back sleeve is missing. Luckily, I had another better original copy of the sleeve with worn vinyl. The only problem remains that at the beginning of 'Vagabond Virgin', the record skips. Upon inspection it is apparent a mouse's tooth had penetrated the vinyl. ☹

And there’s been a couple of times where I grabbed empty album covers by Bill Haley and The Yardbirds from thrift stores, since they were in terrific shape, no split seams or writing or stains on them. I buy anti static inner sleeves and good quality outer sleeves for all my albums. I save what the album came with including liner notes etc. Once in a while a new album comes with a lined inner sleeve but they usually have a paper outside. Every once in a while I buy more sleeves and I buy more album crates. I like to keep stock of my music supplies because they will be used. It is worth it to make an investment in your music at one time I had a million dollar collection and a $50 Sony Boombox. I upgraded to a nice stereo equipment and speakers and I enjoy my music so much more. I find that I have music on more and I enjoy hearing stuff through another dimension like I never heard before. Taking care of your equipment your media will assure you will enjoy it for many years. Nothing wrong buying used or something that has a rough cover, I know I got a couple.

    Do be on the lookout for the Powerful People album by Gino Vannelli. If you can find a good Mobile Fidelity pressing of it, you won't regret picking it up. Would you believe that I have eight copies of the MoFi? I get addicted to it and put them in rotation so I am not replaying the same record over and over. When I get my fill, I'll put them away and pull it out another time and get addicted to it all over again. The MoFi pressing sounds so great. They bumped up the bass response just a bit so it is just a rounder and fuller sound that I find so pleasing. I think this is Gino's BEST album. I have a copy of the reissue on orange vinyl and was really disappointed in the vinyl quality where ticks and pops are concerned. Other than that, it sounds good. Perhaps I just got a bad pressing of it. A nice original pressing will serve you well also. I think there are a few for sale that are still sealed. Enjoy! I'd love to hear what you think of it.

    Bonjour, Melinda! I picked up an original LP by Spanky & Our Gang last week. Its sleeve was in mediocre condition but the disc was good. A few pretty cool songs & some wild, wooly tracks that sounded like vaudeville routines! The record has that bright '60's sound, though :¬/ I have 2 of the songs on a digital download that are more "mellow" (as we said in the '70's) sonically so the remaster wins this time.

    Hi Melinda. Enjoyed the video. To me I’m prepared to accept a battered cover/jacket. If the record itself is in a great condition, to me that’s the important thing, then I will accept the item.
    Had a fairly great RSD last Saturday. Purchased 5 albums, including the Bill Evans and Miles Davis albums. Those two together cost me over £100 Sterling. Think that’s over 130 dollars lol. The Evans album cost 102 dollars alone. I was surprised about the prices this year, some I thought were really inflated. Only live once so I bought the two albums and three others, very expensive day but I enjoyed my time and that to me is the important thing.

    Wow! You touched on a bunch of things Melinda:-) First, I too love T.J...I had no clue until a few years back that Roulette had basically stiffed him on the deals he made and went to court and won!! Of his songs...with the Shondells my fave is Mony Mony ..cool story on how it got its title too. Of his solo stuff Draggin' the Line. As for the dirty records..i usually call them B or C grade..I have a copy of Pink Floyds Meddle with a hideously trashed jacket...I think I tossed it because it was so bad. The vinyl looks great though...it needs a home🙂 I also got a sealed but hammered/weathered Abba record as a freebie..dirty and dusty on the outside...but plays flawless. You can't judge a book by its cover. I have a 1st stereo UK of Revolver too...best money I ever paid for a used record to date.

    Tommy James wrote a great bio-book about the NYC mob and Roulette records. Part of the screenplay for the HBO series "Vinyl" was based off his book.
    My favorite Traffic album is still "John Barleycorn". Maybe because I saw them perform it LIVE when I was a teenager.
    I have the original release of Amahd Jamal's "Digital Works" (circa 1985) on vinyl. I bought it three years before I started buying CDs.

      Tommy James told the crowd that a movie about his life was coming out. I'm looking forward to it. I read his book and enjoyed it.
      I do need to find that Traffic album. Thank you and take care.

    Tunnel of Love is really the only Bruce other than Born in the USA that I like. It's my favorite of his by far. Good stuff Melinda. I don't look at a bad cover as a game stopper. If the vinyl is good, I will grab it. Rock on!

    One handy thing about having a Qobuz subscription is that if someone recommends music I haven't heard before, I can give it a listen before hunting down a copy on vinyl. I've earmarked the Gentle Cycle album to give it a listen, even though most rock/pop isn't my cup of tea.
    Regarding the sound quality of the Verve By Request series--I wonder how it holds up to the Acoustic Sounds series. A few years ago I bought a new copy of Bill Evans Trio 64 in the Back to Black series--it was OK, but since I owned Trio 65 in the 45 RPM ORG (?) pressing, the Trio 64 sounded a bit weak, like it wasn't made from the best source. I finally decided to try the Verve Acoustic Sounds release and it is far and away better. I own another Back to Black vinyl release (Police - Zenyatta Mondatta, discogs # r3376452) and it sounds dead and lifeless compared to the original I used to own. (I was one of those who sold/traded away quite a few perfectly good records when CDs first came out! 🤦‍♂But, I did score a sealed Synchronicity pressed on the original KC-600 vinyl...excellent!)
    A lot of what I collect are records that date back to the 50s and 60s, some of which have never seen a digital or vinyl reissue, so the chance of me finding a record at all is slim. I am one of those who will buy a record for the vinyl and not so much the cover, but if it is a clean cover, I certainly appreciate it. My first choice is always sealed (new old stock) but will settle for used if there is no other way to get it.
    I find that some records clean up OK on the Degritter, but after having seen the Kirmuss Audio record cleaner at AXPONA this past weekend (which costs less, but does a more thorough deep cleaning), I regret buying the Degritter.
    By the way, if you can ever find it within your budget, check out the SweetVinyl SugarCube. They are very hard to come by right now (supply chain issues) but it has transformed my vinyl listening. I have some unlisted videos on my channel with a demonstration: th-cam.com/video/rGgXfEA92sc/w-d-xo.html . Saw this at AXPONA several years ago and...wow. 😮 Finally found a used one last year. No regrets!

      Thank you for sharing your honest opinion about the Degritter. I have been considering an ultrasonic machine and that one was at the top of the list. I will have to check more into that.
      I hope you enjoy listening to The Gentle Cycle. ♥️ It's great to discover new music before buying the album first. Take care and I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

      Also, I only have four of the Verve by Request albums with mixed results. All are good but perhaps not the quality of the Acoustic Sounds series or even the Blue Note Tone Poets. I am glad that they are releasing these hard to find records though.

    • @lostandfoundsounds
      @lostandfoundsounds ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MelindaMurphy I have the first version of the Degritter and have had it a few years now. The Kirmuss is newer, from what I can tell. If I had the choice now, I would think long and hard about which one to buy. There is a lot of information on the Kirmuss Audio site on how it works and why they claim it is better. I believe Michael Fremer has a video or two about the Kirmuss on his Tracking Angle site. It is more fussy to use than a Degritter, though (which is about as difficult to use as a toaster), but not by too much. I took the advice of a local pal and ordered a second tank for the Degritter for a clear water rinse afterwards (I run a longer cleaning cycle with zero drying time, switch tanks, and run a short rinse cycle).
      A Degritter is still a good choice as getting that crud out of the grooves always helps, and prolongs stylus life. There's no telling what lived on these records in their past lives! For what it does, though, I still think the Degritter is overpriced.

    Absolutely nothing wrong with some slight crackle or a few ticks and pops for a record like Kryptonite (it's part of the vinyl experience) , like you stated, it's rare to find it out in the wild and Discogs can be a dicey proposition. At least when you're digging you can inspect it and put it through your preferred cleaning method. I would have snapped up Traffic as well, one of my favorite bands. I have a NM reissue of that LP without the booklet and definitely would have bought that US pressing as well. BTW, the averaged out median price on Discogs for Kryptonite original press is around $30 with only a handful for sale so well done.

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I got a pretty good deal on these records. Kryptonite is a tough one to find and the Traffic album vinyl was in perfect condition. I wouldn't want my entire collection to have rough covers but a few for a good price is ok. Thank you and take care.
