You're very welcome. The bottom line is very few people have the knowledge to speak intelligently about reels even if they manage to tear them down w/o losing half the springs (like me!), forget about providing solid context in analyzing what's coming down the pipes. I've watched some of these "preview" videos from other channels, and it's mostly regurgitating industry talking points and worse, parroting 2nd hand comments from forum posts. In other words, a complete waste of time! Keep up the good work!
Since I'm fresh off the tear down and comparison between the FI and Exsence. I figured this would be a cool way to talk about the new 2018 Stella FJ while I work on that.
Absolutely......I'll be putting the pressure on my friend at daiwa......He's gonna laugh at me....and tell me to "!@#$ off" but damnit i'm gonna try!!!!!! lmao
I have this reel and it is super smooth, noiseless, light and pretty. I paired it with a Shimano Tiralejo but looking for a different surf rod to pair it with because I want to pair the Tiralejo with the Stradic.
A great comparison video and full of technical details. Thank you ! After I watched this video I do love my Stella FI more than before. And I am not sure if a new FJ can service as long as it did. IP68 just means a new marketing strategy for me. No more.
Enjoyed the video, very detailed. I might get the new stella. I love my Exsence, mainly got it because it was blacked out, it it is just a smooth as my older Stella. I like the new color of this Stella, I’m not a fan of all the gold they put on these reels, this one looks a lot better, like the ones in the 90’s.
With all the reviews and informative videos out there, I chose the Daiwa Exist, and I have a couple Penn Slammers and Torques. Penn is the go to beat me up reel, I trust it and won’t cry if I dropped it. Tough as nails.
Micromodule2 does really makes a real cranking power difference , after more than 6 hrs of testing two similar shimano reels size tp 5000xd xg vs stradic 5000fl xg , used different heavy lures and real loads i can say it clearly micromodule2 adding sufficient overall power to the reel.micromodule2 or whatever they want to call it gained my trust that it’s true at least with this one.

Honestly I'm not digging the miniscule upgrades... New anti reverse clutch is cool... But man it needed an ultra light rotor. Not the same old aluminum found in the fi.
I have the Stella fi 2500 and 4000. I don't care whats inside and I have no plans of ever taking them apart + I expect them to run smoothly with no problems virtually without maintenance for years. Maybe a drop of oil. Is that wrong?
No not at all...I would never recommend anyone opening a stella..Unless you really know what you're doing...Plus for 35 bucks they turn it around for ya in less than a week (platium service....the comparison is mainly to show it's more of the same....and if you have the FI's as i do. 3k and 4k. Is it worth selling and upgrading whatcha got. Unfortunately. Mine are in need of new gear sets. Never took em apart until they went geary. 3k was used heavily..but in a rotation.....Twitching minnow baits in rivers.and such .I'm finding...really beats on the gears. No matter what they're made of. you can see the heavy wear on my instagram.
Thanks, interesting. Just a quick question: Is the new FJ in your opinion better protected against incoming water than the FI? FJ should now boast the X-protect feature known from SW series. I have no idea..I am asking because I have found numerous reports of bearing problems with FI's that have been under water and some saying Shimano revokes warranties on reels that have been submerged.
Well the FJ uses X protect not x shield or core protect. Check the differences out in the vid i put out talking about shimano tech.....though the FI is a bit different than standard core protect. But similarly not as effective as x shield found in the spheros sw up to the stella sw. X shield is fully sealed. Whatever it is protect........makes it tough for water to get to where you don't want it to go
one thing Shimano didn't mention is it's bail wire materials, i remember it used to be titanium on the FI, i hope the new one still has it. please do a video for the new exist too, daiwa always received much less coverage for it's high end spinning than Shimano.
Is it ti? I thought it was stainless. It doesn't look like that Ti color. I'll see what kind of stuff i can find on the exist. I just watched a ryoga video that i'd like to do something with.
Tackle Advisors yes,i remember i seen they mentioned somewhere in the shimano website, it's titanium on stella fi, stradic ci4+ and presumably twinpower xd and vanquish
Tackle Advisors I'm glad that exist had gone back to magnesium for it's monocoque body, it feels more premium than zaion. ryoga inherit the dumb non clickable spool tension knob from steez tws sv, the large clicking knob on the outgoing ryoga was excellent
I tried daiwa exist and daiwa certate at the Chicago fishing expo yesterday. Will be posting a video tonight on the LT reels. The Exist and Certate left me very underwhelmed. Not because I found any kind of flaw with them, but because the god damned LT reels are so freaking smooth and tight, that it is impossible to feel much improvement between them and the $700 ones. I actually think that in a blind test nobody can tell the difference between Legalis LT and Ballistic LT in terms of smoothness.
+i_fish I own all the us market LT reels they're damn good. I can definitely say there is a noticeable difference between the Tatula and ballistic in terms of refinement compared to the certate. But they are so light! And even with the street prices of the certate. It's a tough up sell. Additionally I try not to judge show reels because I know where they come from and how abused they are. Kinda like a display cell phone. Know what I mean. I have opportunities to buy show samples from the reps all the time. And usually decline
i couldn't load them, obviously, just spinning in hand.. i thought that when free spun the differences between LT and exist are unimpressive. I felt a bigger difference in the feeling of the drag and the bail flip that smoothness of gears. I don't even know if there is a difference in smoothness of gears. tackle improvements become less important every year. Cheap stuff is amazing and allows you to buy a new model every year.
The last two sentences are getting more and more apparent every year. Daiwa ruined themselves with the 99$ bg. And now the fuego.....it's a ballistic with a slightly more flexible frame material and a zinc allow gear. And it's better than pretty much every reel next to a shimano up to the Ultegra. If they came out with a BG type R with magseal and zaion rotorfor 150$....game over. It seems every reel with the name stradic loses it's like new feeling after half a season.....So the Tatula lt looks like it could be huge in that price point!!! I have it sitting next to a ballistic and stradic ci4+ and ultegra.......Wooooooof.....that's a sweet little egg beater.
Dear Sir, I want to purchase a spare spool for Stella fj. It the original stella spool is way too expensive. Do you know if any lower end shimano reel spool will work on Stella, thanks in advance
I’m 65, back in the day Penns and Sigmas went from storage to water many times before they had to be serviced. New technology seems to be TEMPERAMENTAL ? Big Fish were were landed on them over and over again.
I like getting these Stella's because i reckon they are Heirloom reels and the mods from Yumeya are awesome for making them your own and if ya keen on em check out Hedgehog studio. Ps Keep up the good work on the reviews, love your work mate !
+Henry Darr same.. Unfortunately I burned out the gear sets in a pair of fi reels. Never took them apart until they felt geary. You can see the wear on my Instagram. Opted for the yumeya handle! And hedgehog is awesome
LIke boca orange seals? If you run them 100% dry or with Tungsten disulfide then they can provide a very slight benefit. Once you oil them they don't make much of a difference. THe ultralight weight ceramics help slightly with ultralight baits but it's not really that noticeable and we're talking baits under 1/16 ounce ultra light bfs. Full ceramics are nice. But $$$$ for good ones. (I was going to import them for sale but after 1000$ and a ton of bearings) it was tough to find any consistency. And some shattered on the cast. Shimano and daiwa bearings are very good as are some abu bearings. Purge and properly oil them. And clean them every other month (the easiest way to do that is a dremel in some alcohol or naptha) and relube. The key is proper lubrication and cleaning. too much oil and you can make a 100$ bearing run slow than a corroded one. No exaggeration but it's true. Oil is used for slowing spools down not speeding them up. (hydraulic pressure adds breaking)
Little off topic but do you find reels like stella and saltiga tight tolerance to be a issue in surf conditions, sand intrusion binding up reels? Thanks for the content especially in cold weather in the north east....
The only issues you'll have is if you dunk em in sandy wash. or get a ton of sand under the rotor or spool and have it bind up. Other than that...They are better in every way shape and form than a van staal and zeebass. They are very well sealed. But I woulnd't suggest cranking while submerged. I've been a very avid surf caster for 20 years. If you ever have been to stripersonline.com I go by scoobydoo and am an administrator there. What's funny is...I'm the arsehole who caused zbass to redesign their spool which would bind to the drag knob and tighten as the fish took drag! (if i'm not the guy...i was the most vocal about it.
I am totally revamping my rods and reels. Am trying to decide if i should go a little cheaper by going sustain fi (2500, 3000 for FW,) (twinpower xd 4000, 5000 for inshore), (twin power sw 5000 for surf) rather than going expensive buying (stella fj 2500, 3000 for FW), (4000, 5000 inshore) and a (saltiga 4000 for heavy inshore and surf). Is the upgrade to the premium reels worth the money in your opinion?
+Charles Duben Word hey man! For the surf. You may just want to keep it simple and go with the saragosa as for most situations you won't notice the differences in the TP. I have stella sw's and had a bunch of saragosas. Gosa /Spheros is great. Certate 4000hd is nearly identical to the new saltiga 4k bj. Much cheaper slight down grade in gear material. I never handled the new smaller sustain. But if you go with cheaper larger reels you can splurge on the smaller reel where you'll notice the difference between a sustain and stella... But check out that 18 exist.. Looks like it could be a winner
Exsence has a non hardcoated drive gear. Different ar clutch and water shield. CI4+ rotor...no dlc coated line roller aluminum oscillation idler gears....And limited size options. I think that' s about it. It's almost identical to the stella FI I swapped sideplates with the exsence 3000m and stella fi 3000. Many parts are interchangable.
thats a really nice channel , keep up the good work man. just wanted to know what are your thoughts on the new shimano vanquish 2019- (especially compared to the new daiwa certate) P.S do you think is worth getting a stella or due to the fact that is just an evolution of the previous model is kind of outdated Thanks !
Thank you! My thoughts are I want one.....but at the same time I'm losing my desire to buy high end spinners in general....As baitcasters are just better tools 90% of the time. I never saw the new vanquish in person or held one.....it looks brilliant. I'd lean Vanquish over others due to weight alone...And I personally think not putting the MGL rotor on the stella was the dumbest thing. And here's the kick in the nuts...lol....The exist isn't anything different as far as I can feel vs the Certate LT....Other than weight.......And if the Exist = Stella......and Certate = Stella in weight......Does Certate LT beat stella because lighter Turning rotor regardless of ratio??????? Strange times in Egg beater world. lolol
@@TackleAdvisors just following up on our conversation, please correct me if am wrong. But i think the main difference in price is due to the different materials they used Stella fj is using = full magnesium body Shimano vanquish = "hybrid body" of ci4+magnesium(i think thats why they is so light) Daiwa certate = aluminum (atleast this is what they have listed on their website in addition also their gear material is aluminum) daiwa exist= am not quite sure what kind of materials they have used Now does it make any difference if they have used magnesium - aluminum or some kind of hybrid body(ci4+magnesium)? To be honest i have no idea but i have to agree with you that the new certate it seems to be special reel
The prices are sorta due to the "premium materials" and the costs associated with them. But the only benefit magnesium has... Emphasis on ONLY... Is weight. If an aluminum reel is the same size and weight.. Bye bye magnesium advantage. Which makes the certate an interesting comparison to the Stella.. But the exist is wayyy overpriced in my opinion. The Stella /vanquish are much more complex compared to non worm gear driven oscillation systems in Daiwas. But Daiwa does it as well as shimano with a plastic spurr gear vs all the intricate parts and placements of their design. I assume there is a treated main gear in the Stella that brings an extra hundred or 200$. Because ci4 in every other reel is a premium. Wouldn't make sense for vanquish to use MG and ci4 and carbon handle and be cheaper if Stella couldn't have the bonus pricey gear.
I'd think so...contact shimano...I orderd parts from my 08 sw the other day and they had them. You should also be qualitifed for their platinum service too
Keep in mind the physical size and weight. The sw's get huge. And the 5k if they offer one which isn't always the case in the states. Is a larger frame size coming in at around 15 ounces. It's a different class of reel. I'd never use a 5k/6k sw in fw...but could see myself using a 3k 4k for resident bass, yakking, and inshore down south for specs and such. But magnesium spinners with all the covers and rubby bits in saltwater....isn't that great an idea
They have a 5K model, 5K in Shimano size isn't really that big at all. In fact, it is smaller than the Daiwa 3000 size. I mean unless you are talking about bait finesse and you want the absolute smallest reel there is. The only thing is weight, reels in the Stella and Saltiga class is much heavier than their freshwater counterpart, so may be that is the reason.
Yup....welll that was until the LT lineup changed their sizings. The 5k stella sw is 15 ounces. The FW version is much smaller. It's always been weird that they offered the two reels with the same size numbers...which are two completely different class of reels.
Tell ya what.....ONe of my friends exchanged his after 1 day after it went geary on him...someone here also mentioned the same as well....Actually the guy who exchanged his is the comment that's pinned. He has a vid fishing for lake trout with elias v fishing up and that was the trip that did it in. I will say though....the stella fi ....the way they handle line..it's like no other reel on the market...it's just different
Hey Paige! Nice to see ya here again! Have you been able to use that kastking? They Totally different types of reel. The Slammer is a saltwater tank of a reel Designed specifically to combat saltwater. It has heavy seals at all the points of ingress and that makes it crank very heavy and sluggish (i have one right next to me). Plus it comes in sizes compareable to whats available in the Stella SW line up (which it more closely compares Have one of them right next to me as well for sale actually) The stella FJ is magnesium and much lighter for it's size. And went above and beyond protect against water intrusion without friction causing rubber seals. The line lay on the stella will be much better than the penn. And line management will be better as well. Meaning you can spool light braid right up to the spool lip. Where with the penn..it's the luck of the draw how it spools line. Some do it well..some not so much. Penn slammer is a reel that should be compared to the Saragosa and spheros.
Tackle Advisors I have and I’m definitely still getting used to it haha but the reason I was looking for a sealed real is because I fish the Ohio river banks a lot which is all sand and there is nothing worse than sand in the gears. The penn real just had a much better price point with majority of the features I was looking for, I was looking at the 4500 to handle those big river cats while still being able to withstand the test of time
Cool! I gotcha. For sand...Your best bet outside the Vanstall Zeebass realm would be The Slammer 3, Spheros SW and Saragosa SW. ON the cheap......The tsunami shield....But it's no all that great of a reel. The Gosa/ spheros sw's are proven tanks in the surf. The slammer has potential. But hasn't been proven yet. And I've see quite a few complaints regarding it being very stiff on the retrieve all from Stripersonline forum members who have van staal reels and know what a stiff gasket sealed reel should feel like. the one i have just feels heavy on the retrieve
It's a very simple discussion. And since I've been inside the last 4 stellas and have owned them. It's pretty easy to deconstruct what this reel is. Also having almost every current shimano spinning reel in my possession. It's easy to see where they made changes and advancements.
Tackle Advisors can you explain more please? Because i liked this reel but i only fish in salt water.. so how salt can affect the magnesium? I mean the term "SW" what really changes in the reel?
+Elpascador Sure. The new Stella fj has a frame made from magnesium. Magnesium when coated lasts like aluminum. But if a scratch gets through the coating. Saltwater will do serious damage. I fished my Stella FI in the salt without issues. But it never saw any salt water other than what comes off the line. Shimano SW reels saragosa sw us market Spheros sw5. Twin power SW Stella SW all have heavy sealing and can take salt splashes and dunks without any I'll effects... Do that to a stella FI or fj and it will be dead in a week
why can't we ever get a shallow spool in the US?!? its soooooo flipping annoying that i have to order shallow spools from Japan... it makes no sense to me... especially on a 1000 size reel, why the hell do i need 230yds of line on a finesse reel?!? All that aside... I think Daiwa wins in 2018, the new Exist is on another level...
I think the only shallow spool spinner is the exsence 3000m. Shallow spool spinners do not go over well with the powers that be that determine what sku's to bring over. The quantities that Us distributors have to order to get a model brought over isn't all that high. And it's maddening that we only get 5 reels....instead of the choice of a ton of gear ratios and spool sizes. Just goes to show how bad the market is for fishing gear.
Tackle Advisors bass dudes are gonna hate me, but in my cruddy opinion, power style fishing is priority and is a major influence in US market fishing gear, thus finesse style gear is seemingly an afterthought and UL has become a gross generalization. Being a true finesse fisherman in the states is tough, getting good micro style gear is a task. Ok now that bass fisherman everywhere hate me lol. always ALWAYS love and throughly enjoy your commentary and knowledge, by far my favorite gear channel...
LOL...Thanks man...and you are spot on. The Bass market drives the industry. It's insane that bass fishermen think they need 180 yards of braid when they can only cast a drop shot or jerk bait 50 yards. But they can sell more fishing line. But we need that spool diameter and rotor size for better line management. It'a a pain having to back 50 yards of line on every reel i buy.
Tackle Advisors its like the majority of fishermen let the US market pull a fast one on us lol all i can say is Thank you my sweet Lord Jesus for Proshop Otsuka and Rakuten and good ol' international shipping!! lol
I can hear it clearly on my galaxy s 7 edge from accross the room at max volume...(but when commercials pop up they are much louder). On TV / computer it's plenty loud. It was recorded a bit differently than i do normally and i added a 3db gain adobe premier pro. I checked the audio before i made it public and it seemed good. What device are you using?
+Plugs and Drugs Fishing if you see him.. Smack him upside the noggin with a tennis racket.... Oh and tell him Scooby says wuzzup.... Then smack em again... Lol
To fragile and nothing special, everything looks very very small and not solid, just hold this and other reals in Yokohama, if it would be clock its ok but expensive real no no.
I dig the roller clutch which is a design i've seen in power tools. Can't recall where..but i've seen it...rotary hammer maybe???? The FI was great...I wore the gear set out in mine. But it's still the best fw reel on the planet until the exist and FJ drop. What reels do you feel are better? And show reels are usually this time of year pre retail protos....The sustains floating around at shows last year felt awful...But not so with the retail versions.
Good question what reels are better and probably impossible easy to answer, But when I see new shiny Stellas and they don't have backwards turning and handle connects by small bolt inside duraluminium gear its make me think something wrong with designers, everything to small and to much concentration on weight, but longevity and simpleness is disappeared, In some way this new reels is F1 auto racers but not everyday good reliable cars, cost idiotic to much and very fragile, but inside is absolutely nothing special, and when i think about aluminum or duraluminum gears oiled with grease and light oil its make me cry. I saw so many little used Stellas with some sort strange problems in Tokyo second hand shops hard to believe its original price. Daiwa not much better too in Yokohama everything looked a bit depressing, two stands have something to show Shimano and Daiwa, the rest it was something but everything not exiting, to dark and to small, not fun.
I can't think of a more informed channel for these reel previews. Definitely upload more for other upcoming reels...Classic is around the corner, and I'm trying to hold onto my wallet for dear life lol

That IP rating is a great thing! Inspires more confidence than just advertising some seals and corrosion resistant bearings in my opinion.

Working on it.
It will be great to see Your opinion on the new Exist. It seems a far less “conservative” design but it leaves a lot more question marks ....
Would be nice to hear opinion after one year of using it. So which one is better new stella or exist?
You mentioned Daiwa Emeraldas....can u do a review of that reel, pleaseeee!!!

Do you know if any lower end shimano reel spool will work on Stella, thanks in advance
the shimano stella c5000xg is a good reel. i have tried out and able get a 40 pound grouper.
What lb test do you use?
I’m 65, back in the day Penns and Sigmas went from storage to water many times before they had to be serviced.
New technology seems to be TEMPERAMENTAL ?
Big Fish were were landed on them over and over again.
Does micro module 2 refer to the drive and pinion gears in this reel?
I like getting these Stella's because i reckon they are Heirloom reels and the mods from Yumeya are awesome for making them your own and if ya keen on em check out Hedgehog studio.
Ps Keep up the good work on the reviews, love your work mate !
+Henry Darr same.. Unfortunately I burned out the gear sets in a pair of fi reels. Never took them apart until they felt geary. You can see the wear on my Instagram. Opted for the yumeya handle! And hedgehog is awesome
Tackle Advisors What's your take on ceramic bearing upgrades ?
Hi , whats does MHG means ? Lesser line spool? Thanks
Tackle Advisors thanks for the info. Any word on new model saragosa sw for 2018?
I was shown something. But no idea on when or where. And can't say what when and where :)
How does it differ from the shimano exsence?
Exsence has a non hardcoated drive gear. Different ar clutch and water shield. CI4+ rotor...no dlc coated line roller
aluminum oscillation idler gears....And limited size options. I think that' s about it. It's almost identical to the stella FI I swapped sideplates with the exsence 3000m and stella fi 3000. Many parts are interchangable.
@@TackleAdvisors what would you get between the Exsence, Stella FJ, or Exist LT?
You also said you would never say tatula to
thats a really nice channel , keep up the good work man.
just wanted to know what are your thoughts on the new shimano vanquish 2019- (especially compared to the new daiwa certate)
P.S do you think is worth getting a stella or due to the fact that is just an evolution of the previous model is kind of outdated
Thanks !
Strange times in Egg beater world. lolol
@@TackleAdvisors my borther thank you for the response much appreciated
@@TackleAdvisors just following up on our conversation, please correct me if am wrong.
But i think the main difference in price is due to the different materials they used
Stella fj is using = full magnesium body
Shimano vanquish = "hybrid body" of ci4+magnesium(i think thats why they is so light)
Daiwa certate = aluminum (atleast this is what they have listed on their website in addition also their gear material is aluminum)
daiwa exist= am not quite sure what kind of materials they have used
Now does it make any difference if they have used magnesium - aluminum or some kind of hybrid body(ci4+magnesium)?
@@TackleAdvisors that was one hell of an explanation!!!.. Thanks man, looking forward to see more reviews:)
Hello there. Can you recommend me from what site to order new Shimano Stella.thank you
I've had good experiences dealing with J and H...the guys over there know their stuff and are straight shooters. th-cam.com/users/jandhtackle
Can I still find parts for a 10 year old Stella 3000 FD
I'd think so...contact shimano...I orderd parts from my 08 sw the other day and they had them.
You should also be qualitifed for their platinum service too
Tackle Advisors thanks for all the help you're good at what you do
My question is do people actually bother buying the freshwater Stella? Might as well just get the saltwater version right so you can use it in both?
For freshwater, I would just get a Ballistic LT and be done with it, is more than good enough.
Performance wise is the penn slammer 3 a close competitor to this reel?
Hello, which reel is more powerful for jigheads. Stella fj c3000 or 3000mhg ?
Không có sản phẩm trên tay mà previews ?
Tôi không hiểu các bạn đang làm gì
It's a very simple discussion. And since I've been inside the last 4 stellas and have owned them. It's pretty easy to deconstruct what this reel is. Also having almost every current shimano spinning reel in my possession. It's easy to see where they made changes and advancements.
Another difference is the ball bearings seems to be held in place by 3 screws. seen in this vid at 2.40. th-cam.com/video/wNA1FR0SXOY/w-d-xo.htmlm40s
With plastic micromodule gears?
Can i use it for salt water?
+Elpascador sure just don't scratch any frame bits due to magnesium
Tackle Advisors Thanks alot 🙏🏻.. when do u think they will release a new stella sw? Is it every five years ?
I'd bet we see something on it this year. But yeah that 5 year time frame is what i'd expect.
why can't we ever get a shallow spool in the US?!? its soooooo flipping annoying that i have to order shallow spools from Japan... it makes no sense to me... especially on a 1000 size reel, why the hell do i need 230yds of line on a finesse reel?!?
All that aside... I think
Daiwa wins in 2018, the new Exist is on another level...
to clarify, why cant we get a shallow spool on anything thats not a Stella lol... to be more exact
Tackle Advisors
bass dudes are gonna hate me, but in my cruddy opinion, power style fishing is priority and is a major influence in US market fishing gear, thus finesse style gear is seemingly an afterthought and UL has become a gross generalization.
Tackle Advisors
its like the majority of fishermen let the US market pull a fast one on us lol all i can say is Thank you my sweet Lord Jesus for Proshop Otsuka and Rakuten and good ol' international shipping!! lol
Some Iron Man shit goin on here
The volume is too low on this vid.
You are such a SHISHAMO fanboy
I love SHISHAMO lol
It was a sad day at tackle advisors when i learned of Shimano's passing. I don't think they are around any longer
lmao
The market is flooded with low quality bearings.
Can you do the same video in English
LOL
Nice nice !!!
Assrod sent me here
+Plugs and Drugs Fishing if you see him.. Smack him upside the noggin with a tennis racket.... Oh and tell him Scooby says wuzzup.... Then smack em again... Lol
Tackle Advisors I just whacked myself in the head with my racket. Shit.
The volume is too low
