    So is the sustain really just a 250$ reel selling stateside for $300....just because?
    If the CI4+ carries a premium over the Stradic FK....Why does the Sustain carry that much of a premium over the Ci4+
    And why does the Exsence Ci4+ occupy the Sustain's Price space in Japan? As it's essentially a shallow spooled Sustain Ci4+
    Very strange

    Another great video Scoob. As you may know, Shimano is very big in bicycle components. In the80s, some of the bearings in Shimano's bike stuff used a series of raised lips like on the X-Protected anti-reverse. The term they used was "labyrinth seal". Keep up the good work

    Thank you for the links in the description. I know you're an Amazon Partner so it helps sustain the channel but I can say for a guy like me who is pretty unfamiliar with Shimano and Daiwa it helped having the tabs up to look at the specs and prices side by side while you described them. Seems to me the Daiwa Tatula LT is the best value of all these reels. It also seems to me that the Shimano's lose their high quality after a short time. I would offer however, that a possible reason for that may be that your average Shimano enthusiast probably spends more time on the water than the average angler who uses more budget friendly reels. My only experience with Shimano reels is when using an outfitter's. Those reels get almost near constant use anywhere between 3 - 9 months out of the year for the guided trips I've used. With King Salmon in the Alaskan Interior being on the short end and Atlantic Offshore for the longer periods.

    I own the first and second generation of Shimano Sustain 4000's and they have never let me down. I fished fresh and saltwater with both and I don't know what kind of fish people are going after, but in freshwater I've pulled in 19 and 20 inch bass without a problem..when fishing saltwater I pulled in 30inch Whitefish, 35-40 inch Yellowtail, 25-30inch California Sheepshead, big Red Vermilion and Boccaccio and Bat Ray's for a period of 3yrs before the bearings gave out and go get new ones every 3 years..till this day I still use those two reels and they are as smooth and strong as the day I purchased them..

  • @RvanLaar66
    @RvanLaar66 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'm fishing my two Sustain 2500 FIs intensively for spinning this season. They do a lot of hours with the handles turning almost constantly and they are holding up really well.
    Maybe the positioning of the Sustain FI next to the Stradic Ci4+ is a bit weird at some points but... you do get 2 extra ball bearings in the spool, carbon drag, a metal gear at the worm drive, a titanium nitride coated spool lip, X-ship protection and the metal housing.
    Do you need all this for freshwater? I guess not but... a friend has to Stradic Ci4+'s and I think the Sustain definitely has a better, higher quality feel to it fishing them side by side.
    And so does he btw...
    Is this worth the extra money? That's personal but for me it is. And I think they look a lot better too so for me choosing between these two is really easy.
    It's about time to open them up and put some Aquashield in there... :-)

    I'm so glad you brought up the Ballistic 6k. I'm really liking it. I use 6K size reels a lot for large snook and Tarpon fishing and I've been using a Saragosa 6k for a while but I'm loving the Ballistic LT 6k.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool...this is the first bit of feedback i've heard on it. It felt rock solid. It'll be a perfect fit on my 9'6 tiralejo..hows it's drag holding up and have you had any flex issues when tight on tarps?

    • @allengallion930
      @allengallion930 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tackle Advisors I haven't noticed any major flex or drag issues in the reel as of yet. The drag is different (like you mentioned in the video) and takes getting used to. I'll put it to the real test soon on some giant's in Boca Grand pass. I'll let you know if it really holds up after a few 150+ lb tarpon. I usually bump up to a 10K for that but I'll see what this new Ballistic is really made of for sure!

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome!! thanks! Best of luck to you..I miss them things....I used to fish a ton around ramrod key! different world down there...could have bought a house on the canal for 40k back in 09.....stupid me......lol......FYI 265$ for a Certate right now on amazon amzn.to/2q5U77u
      And yeah that drag knob is weird right??? NO tactile feedback....with the smalller sizes you can turn the spool and knob at the same time with the right finger placement to get an idea....but it's not something i've ever done....and I always fidgit with my drag when tight on fish

    • @MJDGator
      @MJDGator 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely post an update on the 6k for tarpon. I was just contemplating picking one up for throwing artificials to tarpon. Right now I have a Slammer III 6500 and that thing is a brute. I won't be around structure too much so drag would be set around 6-8 lbs maybe 10lbs max with 50lb braid.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dude...........I hope you see this...........you're remarks on the reel are what stuck in my craw enough to finally pull the trigger on it...........Daiwa is asleep at the reel in how they are marketing this reel........it's a 4k bg, saltist, saltiga that's almost half pound lighter..............I put it on an 11 foot tournament ballistic 2-8 ounce rod....which is a monster rod...........and I can't believe I'm now daily driving an 11 footer on open beach and back water........from unloaded redfins to 5 ounces and a bunker head.....the setup gobbles it up.......And the super slow gear ratio while needing to adjust to it.........is a surf casters dream.

    @Tackle Advisors Hi, just want to check if the gear at 11:05 onward on the sustain is interchangeble with the nylon one on the Stradic CI4+? I broke that part twice for my Stradic CI4+, the gear just crack and disintegrate. Not sure how to explain this but maybe because Singapore is very human and it cause the reel to have some issue. The nylon replacement part is cheap so it doesn't really bothers me as I could always purchase a replacement but it take 1-3 months for the replacement parts to come. If it's interchangeble with the gear in the sustain, I will order the sustain version one instead.

    Awesome as usual! Thanks for your time and hard work. For light saltwater like backcountry and flats, would you choose the Ballistic LT or the Saltist Back Bay? I like the drag and line capacity of the BLT, but I also like the aluminum frame of the BB... so I'm confused and conflicted.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sold on the rigidity of the ballistic frame. And the weight savings is real! And pretty much everything is the same. There is the toyish feel factor due to the weight savings that takes an adjustment. But it's proven to be a game changer in my arsenal enough that I now have 2 ballistic lt 6ks

    Great review, thank you!
    I think many people outside the US will have a different perspective in terms of application of the Sustain. If you live in say Australia there is many medium sized saltwater species you would target with a 5000 size reel and those make your drag sing. This is where metal parts and the bearing supported spool come in i think. As well as the higher corrosion resistance, as you mentioned.
    Anyhow love the review! One request please - could you get the new Daiwa Alphas Air Stream Custom and tell us what you think compared to the Aldebaran BFS? :D

    I know i am replying to this old review, but I recently bought a Daiwa Prorex 2000D LT) in the Netherlands. (Tatula's are not available in Europe) It's the exact same reel as the Tatula LT, only different colors, purple and black, and a lower gear reatio (5.2). You mention at 16.30 how quickly the drag ramps up of the Tatula and Ballistic. I noticed it as well on mine. It seems to come from the rubber sealing/gasket that's attached underneath the drag-knob. Due to its shape, this rubber gasket is giving too much friction against the top of the spool, and therefore adds to the drag-force. When tightening the drag-knob, the rubber sealing is pushed downwards into the upper-spool-opening-cutout (how do you call this?) and adds a lot of extra friction. I put a bit of grease on the rubber sealing and this helps somewhat. However, I also noticed that when I loosen the drag-knob, the drag won't loosen up as quickly as tightening it. It seems the spool stays sticking to the seal when loosen the drag-knob. (because the spool goes upwards a bit when loosing the drag knob.) Not a big problem, but you have to push the spool down to lessen the drag.

    I'm here in Japan and I am thinking of picking up the Caldia LT 6000 or 5000. Spec wise they look similar to the Ballistic. Im just hoping they hold up. My BG 4500 gave out after popping and jigging less than a year. Cost me 50$ to fix and Daiwa JP said you cant use full drag all the time (They also said it is a common problem with BGs coming from the US Main Gear/Pinion issues). I tightened the spool until higher pressure was present. Never overtightened, but did catch tons of Mahi/Tunas on it. Did I just get a lemon? Does anyone think The bigger Ballistic/Caldia are a sound investment?. I resently picked up the Freams LT (Fuego LT) over Shimanos 100$ range because the smoothness/magseal for my Ultralight setup
    (.5g-7g lures). Do I need to spend more than 250$ range for dependability in a bigger reel size? I take care of all my gear and prefer to spend money on things that last. Anyways love the channel and watch videos multiple times, because the videos are saturated with info. Keep up the good work and thanks for not just reading off the side of the box.

      For fw reels...I was in the worm gear or death camp for my fw reels until last this year.....
      If you shim the new lt's right (seems some need a shim added) the angle and even-ness is on par with what you get out of a stradic. LIne management is on par as well....Gliss fireline ultra 8 and nanofil can be a little finnacky....and they have handled them beautifully. And being that all reels need maintenance to perform like new...I really appreciate the simple mechanics of working on the locomotion oscillatin systems much better (saltiga excluded..that reel is still a pain in the ass)
      Also look at gear ratios...the ballistic offers 2 a high and low...Some good prices to be had on the tatulas..I use the 2k and ballistic 2500.....been fishing the tat more....i dig it's size for some reason....and my main daily driver is a 3k stella fi amzn.to/2q5U77u

    Hello. I recently found your channel and subscribed. You get deep into these reels. After watching a bunch of your videos I see you are a Shimano fan. I have a question about Shimano spinning reel bails. I have two Stradic FK 1000 and one Nasci 1000 and all have an issue. When opening the bail instead of a solid "thunk" sound sometimes they feel mushy but still stay open. Is there a fix for this or is that just how they are? Thanks!

      Thanks man! Hmmmm....not knowing how clean you keep your gear...I'd say carefully remove the rotor and inspect where the trip arm impacts the the trip and the brake. making sure the toothed side is facing up and the ring is seated properly. And at the same time make sure the spring mechanism in the rotor is not gunked up

      These reels are all only used about 10 times each. All are really clean. The issue has happened since they were new. They seem really sensitive to where they are positioned when opening the bail. Thanks for the reply too. Appreciate your channel.

    As i learn it must retrive less than 75 or 80 cm per turn.
    I may sell my biomaster 4000 and buy a slower reel.
    I want to learn some reels are making voice while retriving. My biomaster does not. But some of shimanos and penns do. Where does that retriving noise comes from.
    In the other hand my options are stella fj , sustain , stradic fl. etc. I am trying to make the most reasonable buy.
    But i have read a rewiev. He says if you can not afford the stella go with sustain. The models in between will not make a sensible difference.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You have stated many times that you use Gliss braid. How does it compare to others like J-braid or fused lines?

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Steven, Comparing it to j braid and every other standard braid excluding fins 40g which is a sheathed braid. And comparing it to lines like fireline and fireline ultra 8...it is very unique. Fireline fused is a braid....the standard fireline is a loosely woven 4 strand and ultra 8 is a tightly woven 8 strand....Gliss will out cast all but 40g by 20% provided it's an aerodynamic bait. (same with nanofil) However...knots are an issue....the reason i had to finish the vid without the ultegra and ci4 is because I loaned the person the tat and ballistic..and he was popping off fish and lures so often he called it quites...WHen he picked up the reels spooled with ultra 8 and gliss i asked him if he knew how to tie a double or triple palomar knot...informing him that's the only knot that will hold...he said yeah..but found out the hard way after losing 30$ in lures that you need to with the new super slick fuzed ines. And that's the downfall...you really have to use either a FG, PR or triple palomar knot for it to hold...besides that it's spectacular stuff...quieter than every other braid..very limp and thin. And it's fairly durable..not the best in that dept...but good enough. The best part is if you fish current...it's very light and doesn't hold water like most braids..so when you cast it floats down slowly giving you enough time to reel up slack so no line is touching the water so no need to mend...There is a learning curve due to the further distance and knots.

    • @StevenDrexler84

So far none of the low profile musky size reels come close. The Tranx 500 is a nice reel until you try to make 600 casts in a day with one. I just picked up a new 300 Tranx i have high hopes for. The spinfisher v is the most forgiving reel I've ever owned...super fucking heavy but solid and won't lock up
