On the Road: Making 'Emperor of the North' and 'Dirty Dozen' and 'Poseidon Adventure'

  • Ernie starred in 'Bunny O'Hare' and 'A Catered Affair' with Bette Davis. He considers her the greatest leading actress he ever worked with. Discussing the making 'Emperor of the North' with director Robert Aldrich and co-star Lee Marvin. 'Dirty Dozen' was a fun set. You became a family on a picture like that. Irwin Allen had to come up with $6 million in advance to make 'Poseidon Adventure.' The studio originally didn't want to do it.
Ernie used to smoke five packs of cigarettes a day, but not anymore.

The fact that Mr. Borgnine could play the full range of all kinds of characters, from nasty, sadistic men, to McHale, to Mermaid Man in Spongebob Squarepants, speaks volumes of his abilities to sell those characters. I've always enjoyed watching everything he's ever been in. RIP Mr. Borgnine. You'll always be one of my all-time favorites.

McHale's Navy, Marty, Dirty Dozen, Poseidon Adventure etc. He made us laugh , cry believe . He was truly one of the best actors, and a truly genuine human being. One of the last appearance I seen him do was a fox news appearance with The Bill O'Reilly show . Bill had been doing tributes to movie stars and Great Americans who contributed to our society by interviewing them while they were still alive. I remember seeing Bill interview Ernest Borgandine and thinking he looks and sounds great for his age, and what he was such a humble down to earth person! But in less than a year I heard he passed! It made me so sad. He was a great man and actor and I will miss him greatly.

Ernest Borgnine was actually an Italian! He was born as, Ermes Effron Borgnino; January 24, 1917. I had the great honor of meeting him when I was a little boy in an Italian restaurant back in the '60's. My cousin, Johnny Ruvolo; who is a dead ringer for Mr. Borgnine, got his attention because of their physical similarities. He waved us over to his table, half-jokingly he said, "I do believe we are related." Once he discovered that we were also of Italian ancestry, you couldn't have wiped the smile off of his face with sandpaper lol. What a wonderful and kind man.

Nowadays actors & actresses expect payment for interviews and the questions asked are typically scripted. Also to promote their movies & books.
Erie on the other hand, he wasn't like most of them! He never hesitated to say hello, give you an autograph or stand next to anyone for a photo!
They don't make anything like him anymore! He's also an honest & truthful man! And he was very modest at the very most!
He knew how to handle popularity & could sit down with anyone to talk about subject. I'm 58. I grew up watching McHale's Navy and many of his movies. He was also a versatile performer.
He could play the mean, bad villain, the good & happy for lucky or be purely comedic funny! He reminded me of my own grandfather, my Pap Pap! He was like a jolly Santa Claus! I miss seeing him here, but he left a legacy of memories for us to enjoy & appreciate! He commanded his ship to Heaven!
May he rest in peace and I hope I'll see him agsin when it's me time! There's no doubt God Blesses Him!👍❤

I saw "Emperor" on the ABC movie of the week in the mid-70's when I was about 8 or 9. It was the first time I ever saw Borgnine. Talk about Satan moonlighting as a rail conductor! It took a long time for me to lose that image of him. Finally in the early 80's I saw the All Quiet on the Western Front remake when he played Kat, the kindly old-hand veteran who looked after the new recruits and how bummed I was when he was killed at the very end.
