Thank you for the info on the big spring...I was going nuts and getting ready to have it towed to the local garage....all because the spring I replaced was backward and I couldn't get it hooked. You stressed this point and I thank you!

Clear&concise, wish I'd seen it before struggling until 10 p.m. every time i pulled the spring the shoe detached the rubber bits and leaked fluid! Had to hold both shoes with left hand and I levered the spring in with a screwdriver pushing off the central hub. Easier! I didnt know about the adjustment and pedal was going all the way down for a stop. But I topped up with dot 3 and pumped the brake in reverse which auto adjusted them!! (After much googling) lol
New springs etc installed but KEEP old ones in case for next time people! Thanks, great video and not rushed like some!

I last changed the shoes on my CR-V about six years and I'd forgotten how to do it. It's been losing a lot of brake fluid lately; I found that one of the wheel cylinders was badly blown. I decided to replace both wheel cylinders and all the shoes while I was at it. Thanks for the tips to make the replacement go faster.

i watched this several times while i was trying to put on the main return spring on the top side of the shoes. What i ended up doing was buying a pair of the longest handle cuttin pliers I could find. THen, you may have to rotate the rear axle to get the most leverage you can to get that spring in its hole. I had tried vice grips, long nose, short handled cut pliers. none worked. you need long handled ones and use the axle as leverage. This is hands down the hardest return spring I have ever had to put on and i've done alot of brakes over the years in my driveway. good luck.

I figured out how to get that damned spring into the hole. A Rube Goldberg but it works. Hold the brake pads together by tightening zip ties around them. Then take a long screwdriver and grind down the "---" tip so it is curved into a "u". Then instead of using the cutting pliers, push against the hook of the spring with your curved screwdriver. It pops right in!

Jim, you seem to prefer to use the cutting pliers to grip the springs. Aren't you afraid of putting too much pressure when squeezing them that it will actually cut, or at least weaken the spring?

Oh man. This job was a total pain in the hind parts. Jim must eat his wheaties and his spinach. It took me like 2hrs to figure out how to get that stupid main spring back on. I’ve been working on my own and others’ cars for over 25yrs and this was one of the most frustrating things I’ve done.
A word to the wise: the shoes from autozone are defective. The parking brake pin hole isn’t large enough, which is a disheartening discovery when you have it all pulled apart.
Also: the wheel cylinder will vomit out its contents. Not sure if clamping off the brake lines is a good idea?
I was glad to see this video, but Jim makes it look easy! Definitely wear eye protection. If I were to do this again, I’ll bet it would take me 30min per side, but it’s a total pain. It does make you realize how heavenly disc brakes are by comparison.

@@seanross1589 I think I used a decent sized pair of wire cutters to push it back on. Right after this, I bought a brake drum tool kit so I wouldn’t have to do that again, but haven’t had occasion to test it out. Good luck!

@@toastrecon Thanks for the input! I also had a brake drum tool kit, but it was useless for these CR-V brakes (I got it from harbor freight) I think it is more for American cars. I ended up buying some special pliers I made a PSA on the main comment thread for anyone interested.

Hi Jim, Thank you for the video, very helpful.
My wife's honda right rear vibrates at high speed, also when parked, smell burning tire rubber. Took it to a mechanic and said the right brake shoe is hanging up because the brake cable will not release. They want quite a bit of money for this job. Would this inability to release be in the drum? - or would it be farther upstream? I know you dont know for certain, but I never had a car where the cable would not release the brake shoe, and not sure probability wise, where the problem would reside. Any suggestions would really help! Thanks!

    • @bushmaster2936
      @bushmaster2936 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Actually not uncommon for parking brake cables to rust and seize. This happens most to people that never use their parking brakes until it needs to be applied during a state inspection for example, or someone else has driven the vehicle and normally uses their parking brake and might have applied yours. There is a reason that this "parking" brake is also called the "emergency" brake. If your hydraulic brake system were to fail, you would be able to stop your vehicle by applying the "emergency" brakes....providing they were in working condition. If you love your wife, get her brakes fixed before a fire starts at highway speeds or she actually needs to use the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. Happy wife, happy life. Get 'er done.

i'm trying replace the rear left trailing arm, it got bent up real bad from a swerve into a curb and now my wheel has a huge 20 degree positive camber and toed to the right 10 degrees or so, it seems the bends all happend around the bearing assembly. i figure it would be easier to take out the cables and leave the axle in for it's other end to be removed from the transfer case. or should i just try to remove the axle and leave the drum on the trailing arm? i'm pretty sure i need a new bearing anyway.

+jimthecarguy No it came like that from the factory. But i just want to know if it makes any difference between 4 and 5 stud hubs?

+Easy Fix Good question. No it should make no difference.

I assume that this is a MK1 CRV. The parking brakes on the MK2 do not have a hydraulic cylinder - they are cable!

I am having a hello a time getting the main spring back in, any movement moves the adjuster out of possition and that spring needs to travel a inch or so to reach the hole. Any help would go a long way here. Please

I saw no reason to do that either in this case. I still don't know why he he did it unless he wants the customer to come back to have them replaced in the future, sooner than later.
