    I will never not find it funny that the class of rookies for 2001 was:
    Juan Pablo Montoya, the reigning CART champion, who would go on to win several F1 races
    Kimi Raikkonen, who won a world championship and set a record for most F1 race starts
    Fernando Alonso, who won *two* world championships, broke Raikkonen's race start record, and is considered one of the greatest drivers in F1 history

    Nice video and arguments. Since Ayrton's death, most of brazillians roasted (even on television) Barrichello, Massa, Nasr, Da Matta, etc. just because they weren't ultra winners like Senna. Barrichello was the only who suffered more, they started to call him Rubinho Pé-de-chinelo (something like Rubens flip flop) and made musics like "Sempre atrás do Alemão" (Everytime behind the german). This happens because brazillians don't like sports, they like to win. Just see how tennis, a rich boys sport in Brazil, becoming popular out of nothing just because Guga started to win. Most of Bortoleto's and F1 Brazillian fans are already planning campaigns to "teach" people that will come back to watch the sport saying basic things like "He's not going to be a new Senna. He's not going to make a Monaco '84 in a Sauber. His results don't depend only on him". We reeeeally don't want to see Bortoleto suffering the same things again, it would be a nightmare.
    PS.: Gringos, please, stop to confuse spanish and portuguese for the love of God

      Brazil had three decades of great drivers with Fittipaldi, Piquet Sr. and Senna too, it certainly didn't help Barrichello at the time as it was seen that he'd be the Brazilian champion for the 2000s. I feel like the culture around sports is changing here, Brazil is starting to appreciate sports more than the taste of glory, maybe we realized that it shouldn't be taken for granted. And not having Rede Globo hogging the spotlight and giving a damn about something only "when it matters" is helping out as well.

    The consensus among the Brazilian press is that Bortoleto was just okay in the lower categories, which made the F3 and F2 titles so surprising. Something seemed to click for him once he got to F3. But I don't think the comparison to Bernoldi is that appropriate because Bernoldi wasn't that hyped. Cristiano da Matta was hogging the limelight in Brazil because of his success at CART at the time.

    Bortoleto will also need to break the curse of the Brazilian champions in F2/GP2/F3000 in their F1 careers:
    - Roberto Moreno: 15 career points and one podium (P2 at Japan 1990). Besides his Benetton run, he spent most of his F1 career in hopeless backmarker teams.
    - Christian Fittipaldi: Won the F3000 title as rookie. He would spend three seasons in Minardi and Footwork with three 4th places as best results. 12 career points.
    - Ricardo Zonta: After two seasons with BAR, he would only appear sporadically for Jordan and Toyota. Three 6th places as best results and 3 career points.
    - Bruno Junqueira: Was close to joining Williams but lost in a shootout against Jenson Button. He would never debut in F1.
    - Felipe Drugovich: Has been a reserve driver for Aston Martin since he won the F2 title but is yet to debut in F1.

    Brazilian here, I REALLY didn't want the next brazilian in the F1 grid to drive for such a shitshow of a team, both in performance and management, but we take what we can get.
    I'm being realistic, I don't expect points, I don't expect him to "outperform the car", I just expect the same consistency that he had in F3/F2, and staying close to hulk.
    Still, as much as it pains me to write this, I don't expect him to last more than 4~5 years in F1, unless either him or the team REALLY gel with the next gen of engines/regulations

      Another Brazilian here.
      I'm with you about being a little skeptical about Bortoleto. But I see something different about him, and it's not really that famous "natural talent/speed" that people love to talk about rookies. Instead I see two very strong points that can help him:
      1) He IS a very intelligent driver. I can see him in the future being someone like Carlos Sainz (which means, no world champion, but a couple of wins, many podiums and a solid career, compensating the "lack of raw speed" with brains);
      2) He seems to have a very good staff around him. So far he's being very grounded about expectations, very humble and open to anything.
      For example, after he won F3 and was giving interviews everywhere he had very clear what his window would be to get into F1 and wasn't scared to look for other categories as soon as he realized F1 wasn't gonna happen (unlike another Brazilian currently).
      So I'm not very hyped but if the opportunity arises I think he can have a solid career in F1.

      @@evandrochaves9596 let's not forget that we may get another huge driver market move at the end of 2026 and/or 2027.
      Alonso, Lewis and Hulk may retire (because of age);
      Stroll may retire because of lack of skills;
      Max may retire because he's sick of FIA's BS.

    F1 Rookies have these expectations because it is Formula 1. These are supposed to be the 20 best in the world, even if Lance Stroll still has a seat. Compassion and tempered expectations are not terms that can correlate in Formula 1. You either make it, or you don't. Not very many drivers get these opportunites to race, so in my opinion, the goal is to always beat your teammate and score the most points possible. This is the cruel side of F1 and these rookies will find out if they are able to keep up or if they will drown.

    And taking a look at the rookies you just think, there's no way ALL of them do well... ofc I'm already discounting Doohan here, sorry. I think Lawson and Hadjar might drown too. I'm thinking that Kimi has a good shot at impressing a lot (maybe getting a podium/s, or if that Mercedes is third best car and luck is on his side, a win? 👀) coupled with rookie mistakes and inconsistency. Ollie Bearman is the ture question mark for me 🤔 sure did real good at the races he was at last year, but still...

My vote for a doomed rookie this season, besides Jack (who will be replaced by Colapinto even before the six races of his contract), is Kimi. Carlos should be in that seat and Kimi should be getting experience on a Williams before getting promoted to Mercedes. It was a wrong decision by Toto IMHO. Bortoleto will be close if not faster than Hulk.

    I think Bortoletto is going to be just fine. Like everyone else before he came to F3 I had no idea who he was, but the way he won that F3 title seriously impressed me. He's got that god given belief and confidence that he's better than everyone else and that's half the battle. Binotto will be patient with him I would think and give him two years to get up to speed but I honestly don't think he's going to be a million miles off Hulk.
    The rookie I can see drowning is Hadjar (well Doohan too but I don't even think Jack should have been given the F1 seat to begin with). His temperament is the opposite to Bortoletto's and I just don't see him thriving in the cutthroat environment of F1. He's got confidence but it borders on arrogance and undignified (I guess that's why he's the perfect Red Bull driver!)
