I once heard that we crafters have two hobbies - buying craft supplies and using craft supplies :) I'm going to challenge myself to use what I have this year too. It forces me to be more creative. Loved your video!
Yes, we all fall into those rabbit holes: dies, stamps, foil, ink pads and for me it's Tim Holtz. If Tim comes out with it I have to have it. Not going to do that in 2023 except for new colors of destress colors. One thing that I have started doing the last couple of months is when I watch a craft video and I think I really want what they are using, I make a note about it or put it in my shopping cart and wait at least 24 hours and see if I still feel like I have to have it. The fact is, I don't usually want it the next day. It was cute but i would probably forget what I wanted it for over time which means I really didn't want or need it in the first place. I am turning 77 next month and I will not be able to use half of my stash in my life time. So I want to just do what makes me happy in my craft room. Thank you for helping me feel like I am not alone out there in crafting neverland. Here's to a great new year. Pamela in Texas
Love you!! I am turning 69 this year. Maybe it is our age that brings us more to the reality of things in life. We should spend MORE of the precious time we have LEFT to create!!!! I have a saying on my art studio wall "I want to make beautiful things - even if nobody cares!" that about says it all :)
I am almost 75 and have so much stash of several crafts. I love counted cross stitch, card making, knitting, sewing ….the list goes on and on. I will never use it all. Trying so hard to limit my purchases. Watching Floss Tube, Pinterest, You Tube definitely can tempt me to buy more stuff….I love seeing all the beautiful creations. Wishing you well in your journey.
I certainly can relate to that!!! I’m 70 and I keep asking myself, “when am I going to use all these stamps and products??? “ Or, “I hope I live long enough to use all these stamps and products!!” I waste precious time categorizing and labeling all my stamps, dies, folders, etc. I want to stop the madness and just create and have fun!!! A goal for me in 2023! ☺️
I so feel you, Christina! This cracks me up, because I see who I was in your resolutions. I could have bought a 50-foot yacht with all the stamping supplies I’ve bought! I used to have six 6 x 3 steel shelving units FULL of just card-making stuff, and I’d get more cute, cute stamping stuff from - - - all the sites. If Simon Says Stamp and Stampin’ Up sold stock, I would have been president of the board of directors. And I have literally said, “I’m not gonna buy another Distress Oxide/Ink!!!!!! . . . . (Unless Tim Holtz comes out with a new one) . . . “ And of course, he comes out with new ones! And then I had MORE ink pads. That’s the game they’re playing. They want all your money! It’s INSANE! Again . . . Maybe I could have bought a week in San Tropez with all the stamp sets, etc. The Want Monster had me in its thrall. I had two walls of my house full of stamps, inks, dies, stacks of 12 x 12 paper pads, I hardly ever/never used-things I didn’t even remember I had-duplicates, things bought on impulse, all of the things you describe. Children are starving in Sudan, and I had four identical $25 Easter Bunny stamp sets from scrapbook.com-one of which I used exactly one time. What was WRONG with me? I am not kidding-this is seriously a shopping addiction. No joke. It’s hoarding. I’m so amused by, “I’m not gonna buy xyz! . . . . . . UNLESS I want it.” I was there! I used to do that. “I’m not going to get any more stamps . . . [Pregnant pause while glancing at Stampin’ Up catalog across the room] . . . EXCEPT FOR . . . “ I took a hard, tearful look at myself, and a long look at my shelves and shelves of aspirational hoarding. And I gave half of it away. Stampin’ Up sets, Gina K Designs stamps. Inkadoo wooden stamps. Spellbinders dies. I don’t say, “I’m need to buy xyz to complete this project.” I say, “How can I solve this design problem with what I have?” I’ve gotten ‘way better at fussy cutting. I’ve found ways to extend the lives of my ink pads. I’ve started using colored pencils and watercolors that I already have rather than going out and buying more $7 or $8 markers. I don’t hoard anymore. It is so freeing! Use what you have! Good luck!
Wow. You inspire me. When I moved across the USA, I purges 90% of everything I own but purged nothig out of the "art studio". It is a source of comfort to me, and I have been using it up because I put a buying ban in place 3 years ago. Man, I so hear what yiou are saying about buying and buying. For 8 years I did more accumulation of supplies than actually creating with those supplies. That has stopped and I don't watch any YT video that tries to sell me more stuff. The cost of stamps and dies now days makes me cringe!
When my 17 year old granddaughter said maybe if I didn’t buy so many crafty things I could travel more! 😂 This when I was fussing about the price of airfare! I said “wow…she’s right” 😂 I had to stop! I’m doing much better and your video helped with the process! ❤
I was chuckling to myself as you confessed resolutions for bad habits I am also guilty of. What happens is I watch a great how-to video and just have to order the things I’ll need to make it. I spend too much time watching videos and then online shopping and never get to the crafting! My resolution is to start rewatching those videos and use all the great things I have already purchased! Happy New Year and as one of my favorite demonstrators loves to say, “Happy Crafting!”
Thank you so much for this video. I decided in November to gift the items I don't use to others. There is a neighbor, senior in High School. She is one of five children and I gifted her boxes and boxes of new and used items that I thought she would enjoy using. Her mother tells me she is enjoying. I am happy and have more space and more to give.
This video made me smile, it made me smile because we all can relate to just about everything you said at some point in our crafty journey. Impulse buying being huge when watching hauls. I am looking forward to your "no more organizing, reorganizing" rule. You have a lovely craft room, but would love to see more video projects from you and nothing is perfect, so definitely give yourself grace on not having to have everything perfect. For me in 2023, I will be just shopping my stash and using what I have! Happy New Year! Hugs, Brenda
Oh my heck, either you are my long-lost twin, or you have been in my craft room. This video was spot on, and I really appreciate you putting it out! I really appreciate you not doing haul videos because I have NO self-control. Lol Here is to us accomplishing more crafting this year! Happy New Year!!
Gotcha! It must be hard to realize these things but if I were brutally honest, I probably have as many things I need to correct about me maybe not overbuying stuff I don't need, but procrastinating certain tasks, and I would rather play with my crafts than deal with house things! So, yeah, I get ya!
This is the first video I've seen of yours Christina, and can really relate to lots of things on your list! Impulse buying (especially when I'm tired and should go to bed) Watching card-making videos instead of actually making cards.buying stickers because they're cute or on sale but never using them.Sequins, inkpads, alcohol inks, storage containers (i have some in storage too, lol) Buying something I know I already have but can't find! Etc...
I loved this video!!!!! First of all, you are a hoot and second, I am right there with you. I have enough craft supplies to keep me busy for a year. And I love that I am NOT the only impulse shopper when it comes to my happy place. And since I have "restrained" from impulse shopping before, I know that it is doable and I am just as happy, if not happier, for my control. Reality check, I am not going to run out of craft supplies in my lifetime.....Thank you. You are the bomb.
These all resonate big time! I’m so happy to hear I am not the only one deciding to slow down in 2023. Not the crafting, just the buying of supplies. I especially need to stop jumping to shop each time a new discount is announced. 😆
Christina, I agree 100% with you. If I made projects everyday for the next 20 years, I wouldn’t use up all of my supplies. I know I will always want some items (thanks, Tim 😀) but I am not buying things unless it will be used a lot. Also, I reorganize a lot, too. I do enjoy organizing, but there is only so much time and I’m using mine up moving stuff around. Hugs to you and happy New year! Mandy
Impulse buying is something I started doing this year & it needs to stop. Lol! My husband remodeled my craft room this year & as I was organizing everything, I found stuff I hadn’t even opened! I’m in the same boat as you. Thanks for your encouragement! I needed to hear all of this. Happy New Year! 🎉
my favourite trick for impulse buying is to window shop and leave stuff in the basket. if i return a few months later and i still need it then i may checkout, but 99% of the time, my taste has switched to something else and i simply delete the items (it’s such a buzz, try it and see 😆)
One of my guiding principles is that before I purchase something, I make myself create something. Another anti compulsive shopping strategy is to ask myself, what do I already have that will do the same thing. Thanks for your video to prime my mindfulness in my crafting habits. - jo shu
I really admire #6 and hope it brings you some ease. The amount of time and energy that must go into sharing content on TH-cam kind of blows my mind. I’m so appreciative of those of you who continue to do it and 100% believe in extending yourself some grace… Those of us who are watching are not looking for perfection, at least I am not, I am looking for someone who enjoys what they’re doing and that usually instills in me a motivation to get crafting and enjoy it! Hope your 2023 is just as you envision it to be!
Great job Christina! I went nuts with buying crafts these past few months. I have decided, too, rather than buying more, use what I have and if I see a video with something i don't have, figure out what I have I can use as a substitute. I also am letting my card kit subscriptions lapse as I am not using up the supplies I already have when I use the kits. I recently reorganized my crafts supplies and there was no reason for me to buy anything these last few months. So 2023 will be a no-buy year for me as well when it comes to crafting items. In fact. I put a note on my wall next to my recliner (where I make all my craft purchases online) that reads: Craft tools, storage, supplies NO BUY Substitute, substitute, substitute
All I have to say is YES,YES, YES!! I cleaned out my craft room about a month ago and was brutal. I donated so much stuff and vowed to use what’s left. Let’s hope I stick to it 😂
Hi Christina. I’m a new subscriber. This video came up on my you tube feed this morning. I believe it was “divine intervention” that I needed to see it! Not kidding. I have promised myself to start today, January 2nd, to get my craft room under control. I could absolutely associate with you about so many of you 23 things, especially storage bins. Thank you for the inspiration! Look forward to future videos.
This video really hit home for me. I realized half of the fun for me is shopping. My mom came to visit awhile back and said she felt like she walked into a store. She's not one of us lol
I loved this! I'm staying out of craft stores and writing down suggestions from various artists and crafters rather than ordering them. I need to use my stash and figure out which things I really love doing instead of getting supplies for every type of project I come across! I hope you'll do videos like this in the future -- maybe sticking to 10 things. We need this type of inspiration!
You had me chuckling so much! This is a description of most of us crafters. I had a a year in 2022 when I rarely even got to do any crafting at all yet I keep seeing stuff I have to have, then find a place to store in my small craft corner. Thanks for the inspiration and good luck! A great approach instead of showing us all the great stuff we could buy.
I can definitely agree with a lot of those things. But I hit the realization six months ago when I said I don’t need that crap no more!!! This was a good video as I think a lot of us are in the same craft boat:) Tfs:)
After buying duplicates so many times, I finally made a master list of all my stamps sets, dies and inks. A quick check and I know yes or no about an item.
I finally did that with all my cricut cartridges. Yes, I’m still using my cricut expressions and all it’s 158 cartridges that I own! I have passed on to my sister-in-law so many cartridges that I’ve purchased when I already have it!
I too have decided to be mindful of what I purchase this year. I have a craft room full of products that barely get used. I think for some of us, purchasing products is a hobby in it's self.
Great video! Ah, yes...the rabbit hole of rampant craft consumerism. I know it well. I have a friend who struggles financially and loves to craft. She is so pleased when she receives my "over abundance" and it makes me happy to see my silliness go to someone who uses and enjoys the products.
I love all your ideas for thoughtful purchasing and scaling back, using what you have and no fly zones on buying certain items. Great list. I hope you have fun with these ideas in 2023!
I felt this in my soul, lol. I am guilty of the repeat buying and having supplies I have yet to use and continue to purchase more things. There was a meme going around that says buying craft supplies and using them are two, separate hobbies and I agree! I’m going to work on creating with what I have and controlling my need to collect things. Another passion I have are eyeshadow palettes and I really slowed down last year by not watching haul videos or palette reviews right away. It helped me to think about if I really wanted it or was I just falling into the hype of it. I’m going to apply that same tactic to crafting supplies. Thank you for sharing! Here’s to less things but more productivity in 2023!
It seemed like you were really speaking to me on several of your points. I , too am going to be making many of these changes. I am running out of room and will never be able to use all of my supplies. I need to stop now and just shop within my own stash. Thanks for this video. I needed it as a motivation to stop some of the things I have been doing.
I love your new attitude! Because I have worked & I was not able to get to a lot of my products. Now that I'm retired I'm looking forward to having fun, but I'm going to do some of the things that you are doing. You are not alone! This is my first time seeing you and I look forward to seeing more of your future videos ❤
Christina, I loved this video and you are not alone! I have a suggestion for a Absolute To Do in 2023 for yourself and it is to remember to be Kind and Gentle to yourself. Someone once said that to me and it was a gift. We can be so hard on, and critical of, ourselves and we get to be just the opposite! Do you know Kate of "the last homely house east of the sea" podcasts? She is in northern England and her podcasts are delightful, sometimes her hair needs a comb, her room might be cluttered and she goes with the flow. She is a crafter, a knitter, a sewer, a journal maker, and on and on and one of my go to podcasts. Have a great 2023 and yes, go and do some crafting!!!!!
Christina, I think many of us craft addicts can relate to your 2023 resolutions, me included. I have racks, baskets, and what not stuffed with (design) papers, dies, stamps, stencils, inks, blenders, and you name it. I've got enough stuff to last me several lifetimes! However, saying and admitting to this, I also TODAY placed an order of supplies, spending almost 80 dollars! Well, there you go! Thanks for your heads-up, and hopefully I will keep this in mind every time I visit one of the many hobby webshops, looking for something new to buy 😉
I am a quilter and appreciate this video. I too am on the "not buying in 2023 wagon". I did a declutter in my sewing room and put together baskets with materials I had already with patterns. I have enough for 14 quilts.
Thanks for this.. watching crafty hauls is bad for me. Because I have FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) Im hoping to use what I have in 2023! May your 2023 be awesome !
I feel that a good practice for all of us (especially me) is to use the products more than we buy the products. I find that I spend far more time shopping than creating. That needs to change in 2023. The doubling up on product definitely has happened to me so I photograph everything I have on my phone and check it before I buy. I haven't bought duplicates since.
I have just bought my first die cutting machine and I was surprised to hear that you won’t be getting dies that you’ll only use once. I have been scouring websites and stores, looking longingly at all the lovely dies. I noticed, however, that many YT crafters say they buy stuff they never use or only use once. Because of that, I promised myself I wouldn’t do the same and am limiting myself to only dies that I can cut on my little sidekick and only those that will be useful for the cards I sell. Thank you for reinforcing my resolve. Btw, I definitely think you should make another video like this next year. Many crafters need to hear it. Thank you!
Christina, thank you so much for your honest confession. sometimes a lack of resources inspires creativity… necessity is the mother of invention! perhaps a simpler rule is to say: I will not visit any crafting website or shop until i have used each item in my stash to create something! It may sound harsh but i had a similar problem when i was younger… i bought lots of books that i wanted to read. needless to say, i didn’t finish many of them but had to cart those books with me for 20 years. i ended up donating them to charity! i only wished i did it sooner! recently i discovered junk journaling … it’s a fabulous way of using what you already have 😉 good luck with your endeavour 🍀
Christina, I can so relate! I don't know how many times I have found items I thought I didn't have. I too have put the cabosh on buying dies, stamps, and adhesives! It is just ridiculous, and embarrassing as to how much money I could have saved. I have several bins stored and it's like Christmas when I visit them. I can so relate, and I am glad I am not the only crafter that has this issue. I have decided to use what I have in 2023 and go from there. Thanks for sharing!
Your video was fantastic!! Made me Smile… things I won’t be doing in 2023…buying markers…signing contacts With businesses,.. learning diy, mainly Christmas. I’m starting to get my inventory Put together for My first craft Show.
#12! I keep an inventory only computer of stamps, dies, inks, paper pads, ephemera, stencils, marker colors, etc. so I don't buy duplicates. Because I have definitely done that! And also #13--ordering 2 of the same thing without meaning to. #22--love it!! I love storage containers. Thanks for the fun!
You inspired me, I’ve been organizing and buying more than I’ve been crafting the last two years. Thus, I will make my own list of things I’m not doing this year! Thanks
You are amazing because you are you. Don't worry about perfection, a lot of us like seeing mistakes. That means we are not alone in making them. I'm also going to suggest to everyone that read this to give yourself some grace if you fall in love with something, buy it and use it. In 2022 I had some big purchases. An ecotank printer, and lifetime access to a printable site. I tried talking myself out of them. I use them both a lot. No regrets. I was VERY intentional with my purchases for a while, and I learned a lot about me. My last stencil order (it was a big order) was September of 2021. My last die order, until after Christmas 2022, was in the summer of 2020. I bought 2 sentiment stamp sets in 2021. That was it for stamps. In the last 10 days I have spent about $110. I ordered 7 dies/die sets, and 1 stamp and die set.. 1 order came in and had 3 die sets as free gifts in it. That order came in about 46 hours ago, and I think I have made 7 cards with the dies. I haven't yet used a Christmas stamp and die set, or the gorgeous triple layer coverplate set, but I will. The other die order hasn't come in yet. Today I ordered the metallic brusho set that I have been wanting for months (maybe 9). It was 25% off and I love my set of brusho. I don't want to beat myself up for buying these things. I USE them. If you hit a point that you are getting bored with your supplies, don't beat yourself up. On the other hand, let yourself use your supplies enough to get bored with them.
Great video. You made me look at my craft room supplies and realize I have enough, too. Your craft room looks so pretty. My biggest problem is I keep re- organizing my room, too. Distracts me from actually crafting. Ugh. Happy crafting in 2023!
This was awesome!!! Did my husband email you my list hahahaha. Thank you for being real and transparent. I'm agree 100% with you on everything except the video making as I don't do that. Looking forward to watching you in 2023 and learning.
Hi! A few months ago I went through all my stashes and thought wow, I never need to buy anything again. I put it all onto a spreadsheet per craft type and will “shop” from my stash first. I think it is the “fear of missing out” that had me buy a fair bit of my stuff. I unsubscribed to a bunch of emails so I am not tempted. Also not watching unboxing or haul videos because I would click on the links and go nuts occasionally. A lot of what you aren’t going to do makes perfect sense to me. Thanks for the pep talk! Happy New Year!
I'm new to cardmaking and I feel very seen with #12. I've already by accident ordered 1 stamp/die set twice and 1 layering stencil set twice! I have learned my lesson and will always double check what I have before I get click-happy! Thank you for this video, gives me good insight into what to look out for as I venture further into this fun and exciting hobby!
You came up on my HomePage on youtube this am. I have been trying to do a "no buy" all year as a sort of resolution for 2022. Overall, I did cut WAY back on my purchasing, but I didn't go full tilt. I'd say I made it about 80% though. It is amazing when you get off purchasing sites, for the very reasons you mention, and force yourself to use what you have! My "shop from my craft room" approach this year has opened up new ideas and more creativity than I thought I had ! I also went through stamps that hadn't been opened yet (far too many.....) It actually made me feel less guilty when I did purchase because I found I purchased only what I needed - adhesives, ribbon, and the typical "consumables" of card making. Quite liberating, actually. I've just subscribed and I'm looking forward to your projects !
Oh storing storage, someone told me don't store storage. I'm glad she did! You're going to save lots of money this year. I can say this should really work. What you'll find is you'll spend less money buying only what you actually want instead of picking up things bcuz they're on sale or bcuz there's a free shipping special. Excellent video!
Thanks for making this video. I can totally relate to many of your purchasing experiences! I’m going to put several of these on my crafty resolution list..especially about buying INK pads! Thanks Christina!
Hey! It’s good to not be perfect! It activates our creativity for problem solving and sometimes allows new ideas! It also helps beginners to be more patient with our imperfections!
I agree about adding extra quantities in the cart. I got an order that had 3 of the same dies 😮. Thanks for the inspiration and good luck on making positive changes!
Loved this video! I've been working on re-evaluating what I'm buying and WHY- it helped me last year, and it WILL help this year, too! Also, I totally relate to buying storage containers!! I end up with some pretty odd storage and TBH, in a constant state of finding what works and what doesn't - especially as the house gets moved around, etc.
You are my hero! I have found that buying craft supplies and actually doing the craft are two different hobbies! My goals are the same as yours except the filming. I have only done one video and quit because I was afraid of negative comments 😂 I started rearranging my craft room 3 years ago, am I done? No. I moved across the hall and it’s a hot mess. Pray for me! Sorry I’m so long winded. ❤
I agree with you 100%. I do fine art and crafts, so you can imagine that I have tons of supplies. Recently, I have tried to ask myself the same questions you have, sometimes I do good, but I need to improve. I gave away lots of holiday craft supplies this year, and I still have an adequate stash. I too have purchased duplicates and more, because I could not find the original purchase, or forgot about them. Yep, I too have way too many storage containers too. I gave away my big kick years ago, since I have a Scan N Cut that is adequate. I am retired, on a fixed income, so I must reduce my shopping. Hope you just do a 5 things you won't due, in 2024, that would great as well. Happy crafting and happy New Year.
You have been in my craft room too!! If my crafting space was as organized as well as yours I wouldn't have to keep getting it in order. Thank you for the video, really eye opening to the things I want to achieve as well.
Exactly! I’m planning on patronizing specific designers/crafters’ die offerings, e.g., Zsoka Marko’s shop. She’s on Spellbinders’ DT (I love SB dies). And to ALWAYS use the crafter affiliate link rather than shop directly from the company, and like favorite crafters’ videos and make sure I watch the ads all the way through (I mute the sound and let them play during bathroom breaks, etc.)
This was more than thought provoking, I am currently doing my kon mari of my art room and have found so much excess of many of the categories in your no buy list. I also just canceled all my subscriptions but one. I am guilty of impulse buying after watching hauls. I have more supplies than I could use up in a lifetime. I especially agree with the die and cutesy ( these often never even get used) purchases and usage. I am going to try to sell and or donate items I don't love, use frequently, or haven't used in over a year. I do mixed media also . TY for confirming my resolution for 2023.
Terrific video! I can identify with so many things you mentioned.. other than the filming which I don’t do. I think it has clarified for me that impulse buying is THE biggest issue. Good for you for not doing haul videos, they are totally enabling and I don’t watch them any more. I prefer to see even one product, and cool ways to use it! That is also helpful to enable us to use our stashes!! Happy New Year!!🎉
Christina, I think you are my spirit animal! haha- so many of your 23 items should be mine too! I would love to know how to use foil too! I have a bunch and I don't think I have ever used it!
Thank you for sharing. I never considered myself to be a magpie...but I am. I don't have a craft room or craft area but products secreted away in multiple locations around our tiny flat. It is not just the products - it is also storing the made products at the end. I gave away about 1000 completed cards over that past couple of years - it has not made a dent in the space. Xxx Happy New Year to you.
Great ideas! One thing I will do is take time to go through my stash before buying more for a project! Sometimes I get lazy and it’s easier to throw an item in a cart!
Dear Christina, I love watching “I will no longer buy X” type of videos so you should definitely do it again next year, but don’t feel obligated to have more than 10 items on your list. I watch far more of those videos than haul videos. Also you can give yourself a time period for your abstinence. “I will wait 6 months before I look at new stamp catalogues” or “I won’t buy a new die set until I have made projects from 5 new/unused dies in my stash.” Also next year you can say how successful you were with 2023 won’t list, and which ones you are repeating and which ones you are dropping. Anyway, happy crafting. You are the first person to say you won’t organize (reorganize) your craft space anymore. But I do see your point. Jennifer from Virginia.
I read a few of the comments before writing this one - and they leave me almost nothing to say, as all were so reflective of my feelings as well. You really hit the nail on the head for so many of us: duplicates, impulse purchases, being lured to the most recent items. There's no need to list my identical behaviors. This was so helpful to me, Christina. I think I'll make a shortcut for my desktop and watch it every other day. I appreciate your forthrightness and honesty. I've not been a subscriber (I am now!) but whatever cosmic force popped your video up this morning - thank you . Clearly I needed to watch it, ponder it, accept it as my own experience as well. So thanks very much. I'm looking forward to watching a bunch of your videos and getting to know you better. Happy New Year. Diane
Wow! I just moved in with my daughter due to health reasons. I had to downsize from 2 rooms full of crafting supplies! Gave away “tons” to churches in my area and to friends. It’s so hard to not go out and buy but “no room”, Mom !! 😊
Great video. I'm going through my craft room and getting ride of ALOT. Items that I haven't used in a year or so out the door. My biggest fear is "what if" I want to make something and I'm like oh yeah got rid of supply... oh well. I really don't need to purchase supplies. I don't have a 23 list, but completely understand. Thank you for the video.
I have bought several items a couple of times too. Ugh! You aren't alone in that. I have decided that I don't need any more machines of any kind. I have all that I need and then some. LOL! I also love watching Haul videos but when I see them I say to myself, "You have something similar, you don't need that." Sometimes I listen and sometimes....! LOL! Thank you for sharing Christina. God bless!
What a great video! A year ago, I was diagnosed with a lung disease and spent 6 months in bed. Just as I was feeling better, my husband brought Covid home. Since I now have no immunity, I got it really bad. I had brain fog and was taking things apart. I decided to throw all of my craft supplies in the middle of the floor and they are still there. I fell, broke 2 ribs and ended up in the hospital. Before I can craft again, I need to put that room back in order. It’s tough when you can’t breath. Sorry everyone for the long comment. Guess I needed to vent. Have a great weekend.🤗. Thank you for the 23 suggestions. I’ll type them up and put it where I can see. I’ve too much time on my hands and buy too much. Ends now!
I was pretty sure you were talking about me and 23 things not to do or buy in 2023. I too have an overabundance of adhesives, foils, stamps and/or dies, vinyl and ink pads. Also have way too many pop dots, glue dots, paper, etc. I think half the addiction of crafting really is the shopping. Lol!
3 years ago, I decided it was too much work putting new things away and trying to find ways to craft with. And destashing is a long process! I also thought I won't use my stash in my lifetime. So I cancelled all my subscriptions except Spellbinders. With that one, I skip and change it when there are things I don't want. I destashed 40% of my paper pads and lots of supplies. Waiting a day is such good advice bcuz we get over that selling excitement. Other tricks and hacks - 1. go look at your stash before you hit that submit button. Just looking in my craft room reminds me how much I don't use 2. Do you already have something that will make almost the exact same thing ? You probably do. 3. For me it's a deterrent when I remind myself it's a pain to find a place to put new things away. Good luck everyone and have an awesome new year
Oh my goodness, I can so relate to what you say. I am going to make my own list and print it out. I can see by the comments, I am not the only one buying in excess with craft items. this makes me feel not alone and I have more resolve to keep on track with my spending habits. Thank you
I am an incorrigible fabric junky. I can’t go past a thrift store without taking home every shiny, glittery, sequin covered piece of clothing in the place to cut up and add to my stash for making collages etc with. I’ve had to by so many rolling shelf units to hold all my bins of fabric that I have had to rent two sea cans to put them in. I thank you for showing all your supplies you have a acquired that are still sealed in their original packages. I thought I was the only person that did that. Every time I see a new video showcasing a paint or other art supply that I don’t have yeti have a compulsion to buy one in every colour to add to the stash of all the other things I have every colour of. I am 71 and I have been collecting art and crafting supplies since I got my very first job at age 20 in a craft store. Every time I bought something I didn’t use I told myself I would have the time to use them when I retired. I have been retired for 10 years now and I have bought more new supplies in the last ten years than I used in that same time. Is there a support group for artists anonymous? I’m serious about that. Every time I push PLACE ORDER on Amazon I should get online and talk to another member to convince me to hit DELETE instead.
Oh I kept thinking as each number rolled by was “oh I have way more then that” and “I know just what you mean”. My problem is I’ve only been making cards for a little over 3 years. I am lucky that my hubby has been supportive of my crafting and although he doesn’t share in any of my crafting hobbies, he is supportive of me. I think I am going to use your list (if I may) and while I will give up the urge to buy, I’ll put the money I don’t spend in a money jar and if I decide to splurge on something in 2024 I’ll have money saved! Thanks Christina, from a new subscriber!
You crack me up! It's like you have read my mind. I, too, have made a resolution of no impulse buying or just because I like it or maybe someday I can use it, no monthly/annual membership fees, be it Cricut, stamp clubs, paper clubs, you tube clubs and walk away from sales. I have enough supplies to last me well beyond 2023....well, maybe I will need art glitter glue at some time...lol
Great video Christina, sending you oodles of good wishes for a Happy 2023! I can totally relate to all your "No Purchase" issues, the struggle is so real. I am going to be diligent about buying and using what I already have, it's amazing how quickly the piles of products add up. Hugs, Gale The Happy Stamper :)
Oh yes. Sequins and impulse buying is what I need to stop doing. I keep saying I must stop and they always seem to end up in my bag. So that’s my crafty New Years resolution. No more sequins this year and no more impulse buying. Thanks for a fun video. Crafty Hugs - Dawn 🌅
I love this video!! I think my favorite is the STORAGE!! I do this all the time and my husband gets so mad!!! I had some goals and have already blew some of them!!
I am a crafter too but I have soooo much stuff that I am not buying anything this until I use what I have. If I see a card design I like it will have to work with something I already have. I am always like I can make that buy supplies and never do it. I feel ya right there with you. Happy New Year!
I relate with that too, so this Year I invested $3.99 to write down the projects that I really need to make and the 2 that I started that's for crochet and cross stitch, I will not buy more stamps or dies either inks I only buy 6 re inkers of the one I use the most, but I will need to invest in alcohol markers, the ones that I have are a few years old and they are drying, so if you can give me the idea of one set of Great markers it will save money to buy them during the year, because copics are really out of my budget for now, I will really appreciate your comments. Have a blessed Year and enjoy all your crafting projects and adventures 😀
I was so happy when you said that you will not buy another cutting machine until someone creates one that cuts (like) wafer thin dies. I agree with you 100%. I am hoping someone (Silhouette, Cricut, etc.) is working on this very same idea. Glad I'm not the only one that would like such a feature.
I cleared a house a few years ago where the lady bought, and bought and bought (x infinity) but never actually used the stuff. What an absolute waste of money. I wish she had seen your video. Good luck with sticking to everything you said. Makes soooooo much sense. Xx
Sooo glad to hear that other people buy items (ink pads: check, reinkers: check, dies, stencils, embossing folders: check, check, check) more than once. I will definitely strive to not do this again this year, too, Christina! Kind regards from Germany, Nicola
I can relate to almost all of your resolutions. I think most crafters can. My resolutions are to not buy any more adhesives or any new ink pads, except possibly distress oxide ink colors that I may need. My ink pad drawers look just like yours❤. Thanks for this very relatable video.
Hi Christina! I love your no nonsense videos and your fun approach to crafting. I really agree with the reducing the amount of matching dies idea. I find a good pair of scissors is enough to trim images out for most stamp sets unless you're going to be making a ton of cards at one time. I'm definitely going to take on a lot of the things on your list in my craft room this year. Happy New Year!
Wisdom comes with experience
I'm in my 50s and I totally agree!
Exactly !!!!
I don’t watch unboxing or haul videos. Saves a bit of money and time
I'll be watching from England Brenda! Dudley has in inbuilt early warning system! Di xx
Lol you’re right on the money! Literally & figuratively. You are so easy to watch, adorable, and real!
This is the first video I've seen of yours Christina, and can really relate to lots of things on your list! Impulse buying (especially when I'm tired and should go to bed) Watching card-making videos instead of actually making cards.buying stickers because they're cute or on sale but never using them.Sequins, inkpads, alcohol inks, storage containers (i have some in storage too, lol)
Buying something I know I already have but can't find! Etc...
Now YOU are my long lost twin! Boy is this me. Shame on me, thanks for waking me up.
Yes, I can certainly relate! Especially to buying stamps, dies, and too much adhesive! Thanks for your videos!!
You hit it spot on for most all of us! Happy Crafting everyone in 2023.
I can totally relate to almost every item on your list! Craft more and buy less - that’s my motto for 2023🎉
I loved this video!!!!!
my favourite trick for impulse buying is to window shop and leave stuff in the basket. if i return a few months later and i still need it then i may checkout, but 99% of the time, my taste has switched to something else and i simply delete the items (it’s such a buzz, try it and see 😆)
@@user-te7zz8mv3x that’s a great idea! 👌
In fact. I put a note on my wall next to my recliner (where I make all my craft purchases online) that reads:
Craft tools, storage, supplies
NO
BUY
Substitute, substitute, substitute
This such a timely video. I'm so bad about impulse buying. This made me smile and reminds me to take stock in my own crafting needs/wants.
You are definitely not alone! I’m going to try and not spend any $ on crafting supplies and just use what I have!
DITTO!!!! 😜
Me too!
Thank you!
Your video is 100% true. The thrill of arriving home from the office and opening a craft item or items package. We all do the same thing.
Christina, thank you so much for your honest confession. sometimes a lack of resources inspires creativity… necessity is the mother of invention!
perhaps a simpler rule is to say:
I will not visit any crafting website or shop until i have used each item in my stash to create something!
It may sound harsh but i had a similar problem when i was younger… i bought lots of books that i wanted to read. needless to say, i didn’t finish many of them but had to cart those books with me for 20 years. i ended up donating them to charity! i only wished i did it sooner!
recently i discovered junk journaling … it’s a fabulous way of using what you already have 😉
good luck with your endeavour 🍀
Christina, I can so relate! I don't know how many times I have found items I thought I didn't have. I too have put the cabosh on buying dies, stamps, and adhesives! It is just ridiculous, and embarrassing as to how much money I could have saved. I have several bins stored and it's like Christmas when I visit them. I can so relate, and I am glad I am not the only crafter that has this issue. I have decided to use what I have in 2023 and go from there. Thanks for sharing!
Your video was fantastic!! Made me
Smile…
things I won’t be doing in 2023…buying markers…signing contacts With businesses,..
learning diy, mainly Christmas. I’m starting to get my inventory
Put together for My first craft Show.
Yes I think I say this every year! I hope your resolve last longer than mine!
Oh love your clean neat hobby room❤
Lack of control??? ME TOO!!! I was giggling cuz I saw myself in your video! You go girl! I have faith in you!
Same!
When my order came in I was like, oh I could have gotten another item instead of the accidental duplicate!
Lol
I'm so cheap I don't have any of those issues :) But it's nice to hear your goals.
Let's not call it being cheap. Instead, let's say you are discerning -- a lovely attribute.
Just came across this video and instantly subscribed. Boy, did I need this video! Looking forward to learning more from her!
We all need to be kinder to ourselves. No one is perfect
I agree with you about the stamps and dies. I have so many that I have used once or not at all. I will try to cut back on lots of craft supplies.
I’m with you on the nebulous purchases. I’ve decided to curb my spending so I can redo my craft/office space. We got this!
God bless!
Great video! You nailed most everything I am not doing or buying in 2023, no more without a specific purpose! Even the storage containers.
I can see by the comments, I am not the only one buying in excess with craft items. this makes me feel not
alone and I have more resolve to keep on track with my spending habits. Thank you
I am an incorrigible fabric junky.
I understand wanting to spend less time organizing, but I enjoy organizing and it truly is a necessary part of crafting.
Hugs,
Gale The Happy Stamper :)
I agree about stamps with coordinating dies. I have a brother scan n cut to work with my stamps.
