How to Make a Gorgeous DIY Range Hood you can be PROUD of!

- In this video, I build a custom range hood cover and structure for my recently remodeled kitchen. This hood cover is made from black walnut and holds a range hood insert that sucks 600 CFM! I also did the same herringbone design on my kitchen island to tie the designs together. With a little bit of creativity, this project can be customized to fit your space and make it into whatever design you love.

I am an engineer by day and a woodworker by night... usually after the kids are in bed and before the neighbors call the cops!
I have a passion for building things out of wood and all things woodworking. I am always looking for new projects that look fun and challenging. My woodworking inspiration comes from my kids, my wife, and the forests around my house. I consider myself a serious hobbyist and I hope you can learn something and get inspired from the projects and mistakes that I make. I will also show you how I organize and work in my small shop in 1 bay of my garage. I will share videos of my past, current, and future woodworking projects with the goal of getting you out in the shop making sawdust!

Which vent insert did you use and what are the dimensions of the front panel
You had me going with that fan noise for a second xD
Haha, good! that was my subtle engineering humor
Do you have downloadable plans for this? It is awesome.
Nice job, did you have to finish the underside so steam doesn't absorb into it from the bottom? Love the matching island wall
The exposed edges along the bottom all have finish, but the insert is all stainless steel and contains all of the steam that gets sucked into it.
Well, I love the hood is spectacular. You’ve given me such great inspiration. Thank you very much.
What a great looking hood... And it sounds like you live near an airport!!
Thanks!... the audio for that definitely came from an airport!
Awesome build. I would need to spend a few thousand bucks on tools though before I can follow this. Look great though 👍🏼
Do you have plans for this build? I pretty much understand most of it except for those compound angles
You did an awesome job! The vent cover, as well as the island, look sooooo good!
Thanks! It was a fun build!
I see all these plan on the internet for wood range covers. Is there no concern for it catching on fire?
So the insert on the inside is all stainless steel which is where any fire would go. The outside can really be whatever you want. All the surrounding cabinets are wood though so it's about the same fire risk anyway
Mind sharing what stain you used? Thanks in advance...
The finish on this was Osmo Polyx Oil. It's not technically a stain though, just a clear top coat over black walnut.
Use a domino for your 45 degree frame it’s much stronger.
Don't have one... maybe someday
Very good looking piece! Kudos!
As the cooktop seems to be induction or vitro-ceramic, it should be ok, there is no open flame underneath. It'd be helpful and a cautious move to still consult the local building code. Some proscribe the use of flammable materials above a cooktop no matter the energy source or impose a minimum distance between the cooktop and the hood. Admittedly, gas cooktops are more a concern than induction for instance. Just my $0.02.
Thanks! It is induction and yes I made sure that the local codes were good with it.
The only thing sucking was that fan! Good video and incredible craftman ship! Looks really good!
Haha thanks!
My wife wants us to get a wood vent cover. How is the cleaning aspect to it? I’m not sure i understand that piece
The inside has a stainless steel insert with grills which are the only parts that really get greasy. The grills inside can be removed and washed by hand. The top and outside really only need to be dusted occasionally
Is there a lumber/cut list?
I haven't made plans for this yet, but it's on my list of plans to make!
Beautiful job! I've always liked the look of wood covered range hoods. And tying in the island with the same wood pattern looks great!
Thanks! It was a fun build!
Do you have plans for purchase on this project? Look great!
Unfortunately, no I haven't created any yet on this.
Awesome. You're amazing! Thank you.
Thanks Brad!
Fantastic project! I didn't know this could be done. It's a great look!
Thanks! It's a very doable project that can be as simple or complex as you want
Great video and build!
Noice!
The jet at the end made me laugh
Wondering what brand of fan insert did you use?
This is a ZLINE insert
Man, this is gorgeous!
Sweeeeeeeeeeet!
That's beautiful! Nice touch!
Thanks!
Awesome!
That was awesome
This is absolutely incredible. I’m going to need some additional tools and a little more DIY practice before I can make something like this on though! Amazing
This is so beautiful! Great work!
Thank you so much!
couldnt understand what you said the finish was that you use on walnut ? Fantastic job thanks
Osmo Polyx Oil is my favorite finish for Walnut: amzn.to/3HwYHUM
