    I've done this and found it very ineffective. About 4 days of work with paint not fully removed, the amount of work required would be much more cost effective to replace the banister.

      I know this is 2 years too late. But if you try stripping paint in the future, use citristrip. The trick is to really goop it on (like a gross about of goop). Then cover it with cling wrap and leave it alone for 24 hours. Then have a tub or dawn and water and a full spray bottle or krud cutter and nylon brushes ( cover the floor in plastic or drop cloth and wear cloth your don’t care about) and get to scrubbing. It’s disgusting and messy and time consuming, but it works. Happy project-ing!

    This is exactly what I'm doing right now. I've been working on it for the last 2 days and I'm not even near finished. Is just a pain in the rear end.

    This is what I’m doing at the moment not long moved into my house and who ever was living there before thought why not paint all the wood work black .. least it was Matt paint and not gloss but me and the heat gun and sander have become pretty good friends over the past few days .. will look good when I’m done patience is a virtue 🤣🤣

    I’ve use, peel away on mine which I wouldn’t recommend. It’s ok at best but varies in patches. I have an Edwardian property so all painted services have lead. It’s taken weeks to do my staircase and using peel away made things worse as it dried in certain parts and hardened. Wish I’d got a new staircase installed

    Great! What would you recommend for a door that has a wood grain? I don't want to scrape or sand much off after as it will flatten the grain. Could I just use a scourer?

    Yaaaaaaaas I need this video series my eyes have been paining me for years but I didn’t touch it because lack of education & most video deal with stain removal or simply paint but I want the wood back now here you are teaching us ! Thank you !

      Sometimes just a heatgun can be way easier. I'd try that before chemical products. Surprisingly sometimes it can just peel off like fruit peel with a heat gun.

    i just wanted to come and say thankyou, ive been wanting to strip the top rail and the top thingies on the post since i seen they got painted here when we moved in. i kept putting it off as i thought it would be a mammoth task but was browsing as i really am a visual learner. im almost done on the main staircase and it didnt take anywhere near as long as i thought it would. Picked up a lot of tips from your videos and its been a project im actually enjoying. thanks again for helping a stranger out, have you finished the project as yet? im wondering what kind of varnish to use with heavy handed kids. everyone keeps saying yacht varnish? anyways, cant wait to see the final result!#

      @@mancaveprojects4693 Unfortunately it looks like it’s only found in the UK and not the States.
      To anyone looking in the States I’ve been searching around and the best one to use indoors with no worry about fumes seems to be Smart Strip with the green label. They sell a paper to wrap whatever your stripping but I’ve heard some using plastic also. If it’s done right and wait long enough a lot of the paint will stick to the paper when you peel it off. Peel Away is from the same company and supposed to be good also. There’s a handful of versions and they recommend putting a sample of each to test which pulls off your paint best. A different version depends on if you have oil or Waterbased paint.

      @@mick2spic Great feedback. This issue with paint stripper that isn't fit for purpose seems to be confined to Europe and some very stupid legislation.

  • @cjfeather
    @cjfeather 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The downside because of European legislation blah blah renders paint stripper useless well we are out of the EU now so no reason why we can’t do away with that legislation and also do away with the legislation that keeps white paint white I noticed over the years white paint goes yellow never did that before….. EU are just a pain in the side…

      @@tizianadenaro4990 That's what safety gear is for. Trading a rubbish product for safety just means you get a slimy mess that won't remove paint and you can't go back. Waste of money.
