    Hi my dutch friends!
    Greetings from Germany!
    After using the mid sized and the XL version of the (original) first Leatherman back in the 1980's for about eight years, I purchased the exact Victorinox Swiss Tool you are testing in your video.
    I now have it for 30 years, and am using it ever since. As a live musician and Motorbike rider I just have beatenthe living shit out of it, and more often than not.
    The only thing that ever happened to the Swiss Tool: I damaged the chissel by using it as a screwdriver (yes it was dark and I was drunk), but was able to fix this on a cheap waterstone, and the leather sheet or butter, the belt loop of the sheet broke after 25 years of carrying it.
    I bought a second one, to have a spare, but never needed it, always use the first one.
    Pro tip: use the back of the saw for fatwood scratching and use of the firesteel. The back is real sharp.
    Love your videos! Keep on doing what you do.

    The last time I was looking for a new multitool, the main thing I looked at was the scissor. I may be a weirdo, but that tends to be the tool I use most. The simple fact is that no one has exactly the same needs, so you always have to stop and think about what is best for yourself.

    • @malthus101

      exactly -which is going to be used more often in camp setting - pliers or scissors? Obviously scissors.

    • @JordanMac79
      @JordanMac79 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@malthus101 not really. Depends on what you do. I can use a knife for 99% of things scissors will do. There is no replacement for pliers. Besides the Leatherman surge has better scissors than Victorinox anyways

    • @DJxD3vZ
      @DJxD3vZ ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JordanMac79 The Surge is absolutely insane. It built my bedroom. I use it for computer repair. You can also use t-shank jigsaw blades with it, though it's best if you use a drill press to punch a hole in the shank. I've used brad point and drill bits with the ratcheting tool. It's not even the most expensive Leatherman but imo it is head and shoulders above the rest in versatility.

    I have had both the Victorinox Swisstool and the Swisstool Spirit X. In the end I kept the Spirit X because it fits in my watch pocket of my jeans and has rounded edges making it more comfortable to use. They both have the same features except for the Swisstool having a ruler and having the jaws of pliers being able to open up a bit wider. Also you can apply more force because of size with the Swisstool. But the compactness of the Swisstool Spirit X won it for me. I like the 'hardness' of the tools being exactly right (for me): the tools do not break but bend when applying too much force and can be bent back while still being able to keep an edge. Also rust resistance is great: using it in and around the sea does not immediately cause rust. You still need to rinse it after use with sea water and sometimes apply a drop of oil is recommended. Making fire with fire steel using the saw blade works great. Most used tool in my life. Have many great blades but since society frowns upon having a knife hanging from your belt this has been with me for the past years and worked great. And the best knife is the one you have with you and not the one laying in a drawer at home.... Still use Victorinox Outrider with my own fire steel and torch attachment when bush crafting in Norway. Also prefer small knife and a saw in the out doors... Just more weight and labor efficient compared to carrying a big knife. A small Gransfors axe also sometimes comes along just because the big knives do not appeal to me. Have used samekniv (leuku) but a Gransfors axe is far more efficient for building shelters. Cleaning fish (even big ones) is a bit of hassle with a samekniv so you also need a small knife.

      @@folksurvival The scissors on the Spirit is less useful for cutting wrapping paper (and have cut a lot with it) but it is great at cutting metal sheet, paracord, band aid, bandages, nails, rope (that fits in the jaw, etc). I have carried both full size and Spirit around and in the end the Spirit X won: in the field I am usually not cutting wrapping paper and plastic sheets, mylar etc is no problem. (long time having them both on my belt: swiss tool to borrow to others, spirit for myself).

    The vixtorinox is definitely the more refined product, but the surge is unbeatable if you're looking for a no nonsense hard use multi tool. You would be hard pressed to find anyone anywhere that uses their multi tool harder or more frequently than I do (pipeline contractor that averages around 70 hours at work a week), and there is no way my victorinox would have held up the way my surge has. It's easily the toughest and most diverse multi tool on the market.

A nice fixed blade often does the job better but a multitool is a bit more allround. That's when you need the Victorinox Spirit Plus, which also comes with a ratchet set. I still use my Leatherman multi-tools, but the Victorinox Spirit Plus just doesn't have an equal. Also try not to baton with these things. If you ever baton with a folder, the blade should always be at 90 degrees from the handle (like they do after Martin breaks the lock on his) so you don't bust the lock for the sheer joy of destruction.

    after 18 years of faultless carrying my victorinox and countless warranty claims on leathermans for snapped tools I think the results speak for themselves. Oh one other thing, leathermans rust at the slightest hint of moisture whereas victorinox stay fresh and shiny.

      That is interesting. Ive been using Leathermans in Western Oregon (lots of rain) for at least 20 years and have had no rust issues. Ive dumped them into rivers and lakes kayaking or portaging on hunting trips too.

      I have a Wave (amongst other Leathermans) approx. 22 years old: used and no signs of rust - actually never had any rust issues not with Leatherman, nor with Victorinox and Wenger (which is now Victorinox too). The biggest issue I have with Victorinox and Wenger is the softness of the stainless steel that seems to loose the edge by just laying around, they are easy to sharpen so.

    My choice has always depended on the occasion. For weddings and festive occasions, a classic leatherman is worn in a leather case and with it a zippo also in a leather case. and for picnics and regular days, something more robust and slightly larger is desirable due to greater usability. So I recommend everyone to buy the most robust model in stainless steel version regardless of the manufacturer unless they have small fists.

    I own a Victorinox swisstool like the one in the video, and it's definitely better made than leatherman. The compression locks are really sturdy, and even after years of hard use there is no play in any part of the Victorinox (can't say the same for many Leathermans...)
    And if you're european, you're getting more bang for your buck with the swisstool (100-110 euros) than with a leatherman in the same price range (import from the USA).

      I have the swisstool and the surge. While the swisstool has better fit and finish, i prefer using the surge. The compression locks on mine, while sturdy enough to keep the blade locked, all have, imo, unacceptable movement.

    My leatherman has been my multi tool of choice for a year and a half now after a Gerber multitool crapped out on me after about 4 weeks of use, it’s been through some seriously shitty environments and hasn’t failed me yet. My very first “knife” was a big Victorinox multitool my dad gave me. I’d take a leatherman any day of the week.

    Victorinox gang. I bought my Victorinox multitool from a random guy who wanted to sell it to me for 40$. I dunno if he stole it or really wanted some crack money, but I was so broke at a time and only had my last 10$ till payday. I told him that this is a fking good multitool, but I don't have even 20$. He eventually go down to 5$ and I said it him: You know what? You not gonna sell it to me for 5, here is my last 10$ and it's a deal. And leather sheet with L-Wrench and bit set was included!
    I dunno if he was a devil and I had to trade my soul with that 10$ for a multitool but I love it ever since and it helped me a lot. It's really for a casual outdoor and indoor use. It's great to have a jack of all trade tool, especially in a tricky situation.
    The only Leatherman model that can compete with Leather is Leatherman Super Tool 300, but still the design is still not there ;) You can access all the tools with Victorinox, but you can't with any Leatherman. You have to unfold it to get access to every tool.

    I have a few plier based multi-tools but prefer a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife for daily carry over them. The reason is that, to me, a SAK is foremost a knife with some other tools while a multi-tool is foremost a set of pliers with a knife blade among some other tools. I use a knife daily more than I use pliers and for daily tasks like peeling apples and things like that trying to use the usually awkwardly placed knife on a multi-tool sucks. You mentioned liking that the blade on the multi-tools lock but the blade on the model of SAK I carry also has a liner lock. As far as plier based multi-tools go I like the Gerber models with pliers which slide out the end because the pliers can more easily be deployed one-handed (not all Gerber multi-tools are made that way). One of my biggest uses for a multi-tool is removing fish hooks from fishes' mouths without harming the fish, when possible, if I am going to release it. Holding a fish in one hand it is much easier to take one of those Gerber models out of the belt sheath, deploy the pliers and pull the hook with the other hand.

    • @nirfz
      @nirfz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like the description you have at the beginning for the SAK and a Multitool. It really fits. But in general i think the usecase makes the difference in what fits the user.
      I too usually carry a SAK in my pocket at all times.
      But at work i also have a Leatherman Charge ALX in my backpack. It's knifeblade gets used for opening packets at work, because the sticky substances of the packet tape always collects on the blade, and so i have one cutting blade dedicated to that, that i occasionally clean from that sticky stuff, and the SAK blade stays clean from that.
      Apart from that i mostly use the Charge for it's bitholders and the slim bits that are stored inside the sheath needing minimal space.(and since i got the ratchet, it's become even a competition to a real screwdriver in some instances.) I even have sharpened the kitchen knifes at work with the diamond file of the leatherman once. (not having better sharpening stuff with me and not wanting to cook with the Vic when there are actual kitchen knifes. And just to make sure: we have a kitchen at work, for us to use, so that weren't the knives used by an actual professional chef )
