Good tips. A couple of other things that work for me are wearing a beanie /watch cap under my helmet which also covers my ears, and wearing glove liners (I buy my long finger cycling gloves big enough to fit liners). I have an embarrassing number of gloves and liners (always looking for the ideal combo), and several different watch caps (Assos and Rapha make good ones).
Nordic ski gear works great for mountain biking, it’s designed to shed body heat and keep you warm, and Smartwool heavy duty mountaineering socks are the only socks that’ll keep your feet warm, that being said, your feet will still get cold in temps around 20 degrees after 45 minutes.
I enjoyed this video. Got some good ideas. I don't have a big budget so I have to shop smart. Went to REI today and picked up their house brand men's waterproof windproof pants for riding. It has no Liner so it works. Will try them soon. I keep 2 or 3 emergency 99 cent harbor freight water ponchos in my back up pack in case of serious rain. In SoCal high desert so wind chill is a big factor.. dropping the temp fast. A baclava helps.
Winter in Utah is hard. I usually ride the road on my MTB just because the trainer ain't fun. Another really good area to ride is pedal up Farmington Canyon once it melts out a bit. I need to try antelope island this winter on a "warm" day. My toes are the coldest part on me when things get cold.
The trainer isn't much fun but it sure is effective. That said, I'd much rather ride outside, especially if I can find dirt. A good pair of all-weather shoes can help quite a bit with the cold toes. Toe warmers work wonders too.
Regarding suspension performance, looks like if you’re serious about it you’ll need to use a different oil in cold weather. The stock oil in my Fox suspension and fork is useless in cold weather because it gets too thick. No amount of riding seems to heat it up enough. I really enjoy a totally frozen landscape to pedal through
I’m kind of in the same boat. I wear a 34 inseam. A lot of times I resort to non cycling specific pants. Seems easier to find softshell pants with a longer inseam.
But that's some awesome riding you're missing! I just rode in about 45F and realized how great it is to work up my core temp while in brisk weather. There really is a sweet spot to be had there.
Thanks! Trying to get myself to ride in the cold (Boston). Used to live in CA so we'll see! Looks like rolling with layers is key.

I’ve tried the beanie and prefer the headband. It gets pretty toasty with a full beanie on. The glove liners are a good tip.
a little late for me guys, rode in the snow yesterday! season's over but i still appreciate the video !
We have had some snow but for the most part we are still riding. Plus there’s desert season to look forward to. One of the perks of living in Utah.

I’ve actually found that ski touring or ice climbing gear tends to work really well. Most of my cold weather MTB gear isn’t MTB specific.

Glad you enjoyed the video and found it useful!

Very timely video and helpful tips.
Awesome tips -thanks so much!
Glad you liked the video! Thanks.

Yeah. Cold oil sucks.
Nice view. . 👍
In the cold for me Merino wool and Gore-tex are king.
Merino for sure. If it’s not raining I’ll pass on the Gore-Tex. It gets too clammy.
anyone else watching this while thawing out from a miserable winter ride?
Currently in Bentonville riding in the rain wishing I had taken my own advice.
I like my skull cap
Great video! Have you tried tow warmers? I've had really good luck with toe warmers when the temperature gets below 25 or 30.
Yes. I’ve used them in the past. I usually just forget to have them on hand. I wasn’t a very good Boy Scout.
what are the green and orange/red jackets you are wearing?
The green one is a Pearl Izumi shell and the red one is a generic baselayer. Don't remember the brand.
So who makes an MTB pant for someone with a 34-36 inseam?
Endura makes stuff for really tall guys. there MT500 series are costy but well worth the money!

UPDATE: My Giro Havoc MTB pants just came in. They're long enough for my 34" inseam. They might be a good option for you.
😂 sweat popsicle
My fingers get frozen, I hate the cold
Agreed. I just need a second home in Phoenix I guess.
Sorry guys. I live in SoCal. This vid doesn’t apply. 80 degrees 365. 😎
However, our trails aren’t as good as Utah
Thanks for rubbing it in.
Gotta come up north we have amazing trails
My best strategy is not riding below 50 🤷🏻♂️
Very effective.

None of that wounds enjoyable 😂
Thats the price we pay for getting to ride Utah trails all summer tough.
Just nope on cold weather.
I’ve considered moving to LA. But then I’d live in LA.
“All of us are southern Californians where it’s 80 degrees and sunny everyday. Haha. FALSE! Far from that
