    If the world thinks that transitioning to BEV without efficiency and emissions standards (including production), they're in denial about the actual assignment.

      The transition will occur when BEVs are the clearly superior option, which they already are in many cases, and will soon be in most cases. The world didn't need imposed standards to convert from horse carriages to automobiles. It didn't need mandates to switch from Bronze to Iron. Technology fosters change much more effectively than mandates and this race is all but won already. Government had a role in kick-starting the move but there is now so much capital interested in improving BEVs that the transition is all but inevitable.

    • @karlInSanDiego
      @karlInSanDiego วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @BixbyConsequence This laissez faire argument is reductive at best. Industry has ignored its responsibility to decarbonize as massively as the general public. You have no evidence at all that the free market reacts to the externalities of GHGs. All evidence points to the opposite conclusion that without regulation, no one is decarbonizing in the least. I'd love to see how you support your assertion that the free market is addressing Climate Crisis anywhere in the world or in history without regulation, subsidies, and incentives.
      The efficiency standards I'm stating we need are on BEVs. We already have (flawed) ones for ICE.

    • @BixbyConsequence

      @@karlInSanDiego I made no assertion at all about the free market addressing climate crisis. Simply that car-buyers will switch when they view BEV as superior vehicles. Millions already have. Reducing CO2 is a happy consequence.

    i suspect that in Ford's case (and the other domestics) you will find that sales of ICEV are also way down, and inventory on dealers lots is climbing to the point that many dealers are struggling to find space for their inventory. Ford and others OEMs are having to restart pre 2020 dealer sales support programs, including rebates, advertising support, and special financing. but dealers seem to be reaping what they sowed, in that customers are avoiding dealing with them

    Toyota says California's emissions standards are impossible, based on Beezy4X debut they probably think EVS are impossible to build too. All the automakers cried in the 70s, made California-only models briefly , then gave in and made all of their models clean and they've all got better since.

      Toyota is full of it. My 07 Camry gets worse fuel efficiency than the 97 Dodge minivan I used to own. Why? Because it has a bigger capacity engine, tuned to run at higher RPM at all times, on crappy low profile tires. A vehicle with dramatically less cargo and passenger space, that just guzzles gas for the heck of it. I was honestly shocked when I started driving it. They could make more fuel efficient vehicles, they just dont want to because they know that Americans want ridiculous cars with ridiculous stats, and if Toyota doesnt sell that, they will just buy it from someone else.

    While The U.S. is cutting back on EV and environmental tech. Canada will continue to push on Ev and Environmental tech. it's true Canadians does not have a population like the U.S. but per Capita, canada has 5.8 percent more, u.s. then the U.S. at 5.3 percent on EVs. I still have faith that America will still push for the lead in Ev- tech in the future, but right now they need to figure out what they want in the Society regarding the environment.Lets wait another 4 years and see America does.

      Musk was always opposed to the incentives and they only help his competitors - I think this will hurt Ford and the other manufacturers, pretty much all of whom are inept and don't make many cars anyway. Tesla won't stop selling cars, and electrification is inevitable. So you don't have to worry that the US customers won't buy a Tesla. Remember that 100% of people who buy new vehicles are flush with cash anyway or they'd buy second hand.

    1) Please keep the buttons for things like heating, radio etc.
    2) I don't need massive screens blasting my face with light as I drive; I despise them.
    3) I also despise haptic buttons. Physical buttons are great, easy to use and have been perfected.
    4) I love cloth seats; please include them in the options. Cloth is much more comfortable in high heat or in the cold. I don't need or want to be sitting in a leather armchair as I drive.
    5) I don't need AWD; it simply adds weight, upfront cost, maintenance costs and lowers the range.
    6) I don't need massaging chairs.
    7 Time of 0-60 is meaningless to me. Why would I want to go that fast? It would simply end up costing a fortune in tires and cause more accidents. Concentrate on range and affordability.

      2) Yes and also there is no need to duplicate what my phone does.
      3) "haptic" can include real buttons on knobs. You mean "fake haptic effects"
      4) Yes, cloth is a lot better on a really cold day.
      5) Some people live in places where AWD is a good idea. I would leave that in the product line.
      6) No massaging and manual adjusting please. Its fewer things to break.
      7) What really matters is getting from about 35 to freeway speed. That is the one people use.
      8) If you can't make your auto-braking so it never randomly slams on the breaks for no reason leave it out.
      9) If the car is going to notify me of anything it had better be important. No nagging
      10) Give me a spare tire.
      11) Electric trunk/hatch doors are a bad idea really.

    Dropping EV incentives in the USA will be net damaging to their economy and technology position. Making Tesla a monopoly for USA EVs is counterproductive because it will make them complacent since they have nothing to compete with.

    • @jamespaul2587
      @jamespaul2587 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Not necessarily. Many brands currently price vehicles just under the maximum level to qualify for incentives, and with incentives removed, they will be forced to produce more affordable models. In a free market, EVs will sell based on their benefits and lower operating costs without support from taxpayer funding.

      There aren't any production electric campervans yet SFAIK. There are a few converters doing conversions. But what do you mean 'most reliable'? They are all reliable: they are EVs. Van efficiency numbers are hard to come by, but generally the smallest ones are best: so Kangoo, Berlingo.
      I've seen tests for the Buzz, Vivaro/Expert/Dispatch, Kangoo?Townstar/Citan, env200, and E-transit, but not others. The otherwise-excellent EV-database ignores vans completely. Does someone else keep track of this stuff?

    Vehicular efficiency is mandatory to aborting climate change, and a huge portion of the world, and the US, understand this. The demand for hyper-efficent, cleaner transportation is high, and, I think, pretty impervious to the lack of governmental support. Or derision in the case of our incoming administration.
    Aptera is the bell weather and thier strength has always come from thier product, which is turning into precisely the vehicle that they engineered it to be. I anticipate great success for Aprera, and they WILL be noticed and emulated.

I now expect Toyota to start having a lot of trouble competing with someone. I am not sure yet who but I know that ICE cars that are even cleaner can be done and they are going to lose the ICE market as well as the EV market.

    When Hertz talks about completing a complete fleet changeover by the end of the first quarter of next year, does this mean that they will be completely reverting to ICE vehicles or simply that they will be choosing other EV manufacturers' offerings instead of Tesla's?
    Personally, I think that they may be still stuck in a slightly outdated mindset that was appropriate to the mechanical wear & tear of ICE vehicles but is not necessarily fit for the electrification of transportation, since EV's don't have an engine or associated parts, & thus a relatively quick fleet turnover is somewhat premature. The fixation on depreciation needs to change, and they really should be keeping these vehicles for at least another 3yrs. Even Octopus Energy in the UK who have an EV leasing division are re-leasing vehicles as long as they are in good enough condition, and why wouldn't they? There's less capital expenditure required for fleet renewal.

    • @alsavage1
      @alsavage1 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      For a rental vehicle, the "wear and tear" isn't the drivetrain, it's the cosmetics: finish/paint, dings & dents, and esp. the interior. And the resale equation is a major part of the profitability of the mainstream rental business model. If certain costs can't be recovered by the resale value, that vehicle isn't profitable to the business.

A Porsche Taycan ($125k) recently won the Out of Spec Seattle to Boston I-90 EV race because of its superior charging (320 kw peak), 97 kwh battery, and 3 miles/kwh efficiency. The Porsche Taycan, heralded as a next generation EV, won easily over the other 8 EV contenders. The new Tesla model 3 long range rwd ($42.5k, 3.8 mi/kwh, 82 kwh battery) came in second. Surprisingly, the Lucid Air Grand Touring ($130k, 118kwh battery) came in next to last (should have been second or third) because the crew didn't charge when the car told them to and ran out of electric juice towards the end!

    Plastics are a fact of life in just about every facet of our modern day lives, right down to the cars we drive, the IT equipment we use, packaging and of course, solar panels, wiring coatings & harnesses, the list is virtually endless. The writing of this comment is prompted by Nikki's remarks in the ATMOS sponsorship ad about giving the fossil fuels industries the middle finger. TBC: I'm not picking on anyone for wanting to give the fossil fuels industries the middle finger, I do too, but humanity has so much of how we do things intimately tied to plastic and its various applications, it's truly hard to grasp how we will finally manage to divorce ourselves from fossil fuels in as timely a manner as is necessary to prevent anthropogenic induced runaway climate change. Virtually every eco-friendly product that springs to mind has very high percentages of plastic componentry, including, ironically, the packaging they tend to come in.
    Even modern medicine is highly dependent on plastics for a whole range of products ranging from disposable drip bags & tubing, disposable sterile dressing packs, medicine bottles & packaging, even medicines themselves and a gazillion other things besides, as Kate Walton-Elliott can confirm.
    In conclusion, the total abandonment of fossil fuels usage is a truly sticky conundrum.

    If you were to not follow the EV industry and watch this as your first TEN, you'd be convinced the EV is dying, and it's time to focus instead on e-bikes. After this auto industry floundered for a for more than a decade to kick off the EV revolution, it caught its stride, and a year later it's all falling apart. Is it just late stage capitalism that is crushing the soul of the EV, obscuring our need to quickly transition, or is there more to this? Are we actually seeing the problem with large battery, high production emissions, resource & cost constrained luxury EVs, you know, the kind Elon said were the only ones people would buy, while lambasting compromised nerd cars? Car companies surely could have built and sold Bolts and Leafs, though not at a profit, and by the time we've upsized the battery to 50 kWh and way beyond and the average owner isn't actually charging with renewable energy physically while their solar is live, but via contractual shuffle of renewable energy RECs/PPAs/Net metering which defy reality because of diurnal and seasonal renewable insufficiencies, it's not an actual scalable formula but still a loose proof of concept. I'm a fan of solar + BEV, but it's not yet a sustainable formula for people who work during the day, and maybe never will be, given the emissions and energy impact of the BEVs we're selling. We've failed to rethink transportation as actually sustainable, and instead we made the same SUVs and huge pickup trucks with massive batteries. We let the profitability of the transport affect it's design and eliminated its sustainability along the way. Shame on all of us for trusting a con man like Elon, that his formula was good for the planet. Sustainability has an actual measure and that is zero CO2e emissions well to wheel, not 1/3 to 3/4 lower than ICE. The circular economy with Electric/sail cargo ships, electric mining equipment, every supplier and every material impact being actually zero has no timetable, not organizing principle. The sustainable BEV myth is all built on a false promise that we're all rowing in the same direction with the same urgency, which was never going to be true without global government mandates.
    So onward with e-bikes, micromobility and electric trains, the things industry and governments and people will have to fall back to as the auto industry bankrupts itself trying to prop up a false solution. People using emissions and math beyond 2050 always realized the full sized person single occupancy motor vehicle cannot last forever, be it ICE or EV. I was a life long car enthusiast and clearly still hold a special place in my heart for them. But to cling onto full sized BEV as a solution is only helping to kill the car faster by seriously accelerating emissions via the BEV industry and thus ramping up industrial emissions globally. China alone has no doubt signed its own fate going from very few cars to becoming the largest car market in the world in short time, while allowing themselves a crazy slow timeline to snuff out coal. The upside is that China is leading at micromobility and understands how to build microcars too. And they remember how to ride a bike.

    The Chevy Bolt has reliability issues per Consumer Reports. It is dicey to even consider one unless you enjoy spending time in repair shops.

      How reliable does a car have to be to be a reasonable purchase? The early Teslas (over seven years old) are dropping like old flies, as the battery case leaks are corroding the BMBs and cell terminals. The LDU rotor seals can't be kept in service for more than a couple of years on the replacements, and the originals only made it past 50k rarely. These are *expensive* repairs. I got a friend into a used Bolt this summer (with a GM-replaced battery and a new 8-year warranty on it), not a used Tesla, because I've worked on more Teslas than I want to.

    Hybrids are still the vehicles to get in the U.S. for another decade. Maybe by then we'll have charging infrastructure will people actually live, work, and run errands.

      Hereabouts (upstate NY) there are plenty of chargers, even in the mountains, but not enough affordable EVs.

      I disagree. If you can't use an EV for your life you are better off with an ICE car than a hybrid. Hybrids have too many extra things that can go wrong and you are carrying a lot of extra weight.

      @@kensmith5694It depends on the brand. Toyota hybrids are the most reliable over the Big 3. I have 2009 Prius with only one brake problem early on. Now at 144K miles, it seems to be just right.
