- Life is more fun when you live by the extremes. That's why my 9 hour journey from Dubai to Kandy was half in a business class seat and half standing in a third class bus.
Most people would have taken an economy flight and then a taxi to Kandy, but I'm not most people. I'm always looking for a different experience than what's normal.
On previous trips to Sri Lanka I've always traveled from the airport to Colombo before going elsewhere. This time I discovered something that they don't tell you in the guidebooks, that there's a bus station 10 minutes walk away from the airport where you can catch a direct bus to Kandy. No need to travel into Colombo first.

We had some Sri Lankens in my restaurant today, (Norfolk UK), we were chatting about Vlogs, Baldr, Mr Bald etc, then he said to me, “have you seen that gentleman Dale with the funny voice”, (Scottish accent), I said yes he’s great, he and his family all agreed 👍

Dale, enjoyed watching this and so helpful for me to know about latest public transport available these days (as I'm always travelling by car when in SL and haven't used public transport since childhood!)... so nice of you to give prices in 3 currencies! What a bargain to get a bus for just 79p!!!!... glad you got a seat in the end as you can't stand all the way to Kandy!... here's some tips for you for your next journey!.... the Sinhalese name for Kandy is "Nuwara"... not to be confused with "Nuwara Eliya" which is a completely different city!!! 😁... so you can try some Sinhala if people don't understand the English name (but most do!)... there is a religious etiquette followed on the buses (and everywhere!) which has always been followed... as you are aware there are 4 official religions in SL: Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity.... everyone boards the bus from the back but if there is a man/woman who is of "the cloth" ie holy person like a monk, nun, priest, etc who needs to board the bus then no matter what time they come to the bus stand but they are expected to queue at the front and board the bus first and they board from the front entrance near the driver... whoever is seated in the front seat of the bus behind the driver will give up his/her seat to a member of the clergy of whatever religion (even if it's a needier person!)... this is done automatically without question as respect is given to religion and clergy!... so remember you would be expected to do this if you have occupied the front seat....if you don't follow the etiquette then everyone will get offended and could throw you off the bus if you refuse to do it! (they would guide a foreigner who is not aware of this unspoken rule so no worries!)... nice to see you travel on Sri Lankan Airlines and enjoyed Business Class! 😊... they have won several awards... friendliest cabin crew... most punctual airline... and airline with best Wi-Fi service (helpful for you!)... just recently they helped evacuate Sri Lankans who needed to leave Wuhan due to the coronavirus... Sri Lanka have taken great precautions to protect those who have been exposed to the virus... lastly if you are not aware "Ayubowan" is a formal greeting (said usually with palms placed together and head slightly bowed on formal occasions).... it means "may you live long" and can be said any time of day, anywhere but locals don't use it casually as "hello"... these days they use so many ways of greeting (ask the locals or Jeremy who is fluent in Sinhala!)... huge thumbs up for this video which I enjoyed! 😀
Dale, need to add that I was impressed that you wanted to watch a Sinhala movie!... did you watch one in the end?.... I suggest one for you that is recent and quite controversial and I think mostly in English (starring former Miss Sri Lanka Jacqueline Fernandez and Alston Koche)... it's called According to Matthew..... and it's a true story!... quite eery!

Thank you for visiting Sri Lanka again .you are one of the few who is going to revive tourism to Sri Lanka. Never knew there was a huge bus station in the airport to go to various locations on the island. In Sri Lanka I found most people would swap there seat for a short while to stand if you are desperate. Rs 179 for 60 miles is a good fare,if you can put up with a few stares and a bumpy ride .

No It's not.Red ones with SLTB logo are gov busses but same prices. You can get the idea about price by color of the sticker that shows bus route.
Yellow -Normal price
Blue-Semi Luxury- 150% normal price
Green-Luxury(Air Conditioned)-Double price
It's not worth to get a semi luxury there's no big difference than normal ones.

Sri Lankan bus conductors always do that favour for you. Specially for long distance passengers. They find a person who gets down from short distance and ask us to stay close to that seat :)
