Correct we could not find a direct flight from Honolulu to New Chitose Airport on any airlines. This was the best option for us and we flew Japan Airlines. We could have also taken the Shinkansen but, I think it's a 7 hour ride and not cheap so doing the domestic flight saved time and I think cost we about the same, including the rapid train we caught from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo Station which took about 45 mins but was something like $15-$20. As times change there could possibly be direct flights in the future which would be amazing, we can hope for it anyways.
We didn't fill out the info online to get a QR code so it took longer about an hour all together but that is because we had to fill out a short form with hotel info, our info how long we were staying then getting through the line. it didn't feel that long though.
