    I'll never forget it. This was when I was 14 and I was still pretty hardcore about NASCAR at the time, although I also watched every sports car race I could... and every Indy 500 since about 1991. My history with Indycar up to that point was erratic and the last Indycar race before this I had watched was CART's 1996 Indy Toronto. As far as I knew Indycars sounded like bees, paint my face confused when I tuned in for this race. I remember not really liking the change, but thoroughly enjoying the racing and the drivers. Tuned in to IRL consistently since then and of course today it's the unified Indycar Series.
    One thing I always hated is how people diss the "talent pool" or lack-thereof during the IRL days. Maybe they weren't the most talented group of open wheel drivers, but in my recollection.... they usually put on a better quality race and Cart, with all its glorious drivers, had many more embarrassing moments caused by driver errors.
    Weird era overall for open wheel. For motorsports as a whole it was a tremendous time though. USAC, WoO, SCCA, ASA, and even IMCA all had full TV coverage of all their races. You always had a race to watch at least once but usually twice in-between race weekends.
    Just think, back then we thought the Networks were super greedy. Little would we know how greedy they would soon become, and that it would be the networks that would kill off the majority of non-premier motorsports coverage.

      Yeah CART was where retired F1 drivers went. But Indy was a bunch of young hungry drivers who wanted to compete in the IRL for its own sake and not just a stepping stone to something else, and they weren't just retired drivers from another competition just there to chill out and earn millions while not trying as hard.
      These days, the unified Indycar is all about that. It's packed full of young hungry drivers who all are desperate to win indycar championships. You've got people like Josef Newgarden who was on course to being the best American driver in F1 ever, his entire life had been dedicated to eventually making it to F1. But once he tried Indycar he found it was a lot more fun, indycar is much much more about the drivers than it is about the cars, whereas F1 is the other way around where even the best driver in the world isn't gonna win anything in the worst car, there's just nothing that can be done
      But with indycar it's much more open. There's 10+ drivers who can win a race at any one time. The championship is completely wide open and it's anybody's guess who's gonna win the title, whereas in F1 it's already between only 4 people at most, and that's being _VERY_ generous. Ultimately it's almost certain to be Max again.
      Don't get me wrong I adore F1 and I always will. But man I was an idiot missing out on indycar all these years. Nascar too. They're both amazing.

    Awesome to finally have a high quality version of this race! We still need to get two IRL races from 1998 back onto TH-cam which are the 1998 Pep Boys 400K (Dover) and the 1998 Visionaire 500K (Charlotte)! The two aforementioned races in addition to the 1996 True Value 200 (Loudon), the 1998 Atlanta 500 Classic (Atlanta), the 1998 Lone Star 500 (Texas), and the 1998 Las Vegas 500K (Las Vegas) also deserve high quality versions!

    Final race under the USAC sanction. After the confusing green-checkered finish at Indy and this scoring fiasco a week later, the IRL took control of officiating for the next race in Colorado.

    • @robminmonaca
      @robminmonaca 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      HODIUSDUDE USAC should have been out of Indycar completely by the 80s. CART should have sanctioned the Indy 500 in the 80s and maybe a split would not have happened the way it did in 1996 and USAC was still a major player since it still ran the 500 in 1996. However maybe IMS would have been forced to just keep the CART relationship going due to USAC not being in control of IMS but Tony George would probably got a new team and a few from the USAC group.

    • @de-fault_de-fault
      @de-fault_de-fault 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      USAC had proven itself unable to manage racing at this level 20 years prior, which is why CART existed in the first place. It then continued to prove that every year while reigning over its one-race fiefdom at Indy. The biggest race of the year was run not only run to technical regs that were slightly different, but some procedures were different (like when it was ok to pass the pace car during a restart, as Scott Goodyear found out...plus USAC brought the closed pits over from NASCAR a few years before CART did). That wasn't ideal, but the real kicker was they seemed to make up penalties as they went along and never accepted blame for anything, ever. The only reason they were able to hang around was because of their ties to the Hulman/George family, and I have no doubt that if Indy had not persisted as a one-race championship throughout the '80s, Tony George would have accepted in the '90s that he needed to work with CART instead of trying to build that one-race championship back into a full series.

ASA generally did have full coverage though. Hate to say it, but I think this is the golden age of dirt and sprint broadcasting. Every race is live, and nothing is shortened for tv time. USAC's heats were regularly shortened to fit a 2 hour or 2 and a half hour time window. Once in 96, they just didn't cover the ending of a midget race after it'd been red flagged. • @HumbertoSaabedra
      @HumbertoSaabedra 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They found during testing that the higher banking worked better than expected during the first practice session. The idea behind the dual banking was that TMS would have blocked off the upper banking with a barricade if the speeds were too high and kept them on the low side, but it wasn't necessary. CART's chief steward at the time rejected the implementation of the dual banking because of the transition, which was borne out by the wreckfest NASCAR races over the first three years.
