The reason the tension goes away when he's not at the cabin is because that was the point. The cabin is like a representation of all the negativity in his life. It's empty, quiet, secluded, plus he's constantly thinking Shooter is lurking around.

One of my favorite King adaptations, I think everything fit well and made sense for it to be done the way it was. They said that going through the mirror was supposed to symbolize that from that point forward, you were seeing everything through Mort's eyes, as he was seeing it (Shooter, the differences in his home and the motel, etc;). As for it dragging out, he was dealing with loss and depression, a state where everything feels like it's dragging out and you just don't want to deal with anything. Even the squirrel was a cool detail to include, because when you're in a moment of extreme stress you fixate on weird/random things. I think, for the most part, it did a great job of making the viewer feel what the protagonist was feeling.

  • @littlebitaver

I love that he spent that much time sniffing the book. Sniffing books is good. At the time I always felt Depps quirks that he mentioned were Hunter Thompson still being in his system. HST was/is a big part of his life and like Bill Murray warned him; he wouldn't be getting him out of his system any time soon after playing him. It cannot be a coincidence that the Rum Diary is shown prominantley on Morts book shelf in the cabin.

I'm surprised that many people don't like this. Because it is one of my favourite movies. Johnny Depp and John Turturro are both fantastic, it's very original and there is a lot behind the story. There are a lot of good references in this movie which really add to the story. Also, I like the genre switches that are mentioned, for me it works really well. And I like slow movies, so the middle part should always stay in it for me. This is A+ material, no matter how bad some people rate it.

That shot that goes through the mirror I always felt was a subtle hint that there was a split personality to Depp, one minute we see his reflection then very suddenly we're in the room with him. Subtle, and intriguing

Yeah, I know what you mean. I just love that atmosphere, that feeling of being alone in a cabin, surrounded by the woods with this crazy guy stalking you. I like nature and I love being alone, just doing my stuff, eating, sleeping so I guess it also explains my love for this movie. It’s definitely a very underrated movie, in my opinion.

The shot going through the mirror is illustrative of leaving Mort's mind and entering the real world. It's not there just for show. Also you forgot to mention the score by Philip Glass.

1:00 that is literally my favorite part about books, the smell. I was at the library and opened a book that clearly hasn't been opened in a while and the smell of the paper and ink wafted so I sniffed the page just while the librarian turned the corner and looked at me. She just looked disgusted and turned around. They see a lot of homeless so they are probably used to it

SPOILER: I don't know if it's been said yet, but I took the fancy shot with the mirror in the beginning to be plot-relevant. I believe there's another use of the mirror later on as the reveal happens. We start the film going into the mirror (Depp's mind) and then when we come out of it later on, it's the return to reality as everything he's actually been doing becomes clear. Sort of like the mirror theory for Kubrick's version of The Shining, where whenever Jack sees the ghosts, there's a mirror nearby.

Hey Chris, I just wanted to point out something if you didn't notice. The significance of going into the mirror at the beginning is that it shows that everything from then on in the film is from Depp's perspective. At the end of the film after he realizes that Turturro is him the camera goes back through the mirror so we can see things as they are. I just thought that it was interesting and I think there was more too the camera going into the mirror than just being a cool looking shot. P.S. I love your work.

This is one of my favourite movies but I do tend to like slower-paced, drawn-out movies as well. I don't remember thinking the movie ever dragged and I like the story with the divorce as it really played into the whole situation. If you like a good mystery thriller, and you like a good drawn-out story, definitely give this film a watch.

The shot where the camera goes through the mirror in the beginning is us (the viewer) being transported into Depp's point of view in the movie. They explain this in the DVD commentary. Was one of my favorite movies growing up and I was poor so would watch commentary on movies I liked. I think it's a pretty neat idea.

I don't agree that the story loses steam in the second half. I was more invested in seeing what Morty would do to get back at the one who hurt and betrayed him the most. This movie delivered that in a cliche yet shocking way. In my mind, the mission was completed and the movie had set out what it intended to do for the most part.

Loved this movie so much! And Johnny Depp was brilliant as always
And I did notice the hints of his Captain Jack Sparrow.
Also personally, I love when the director thinks of cool camera angles and floats which introduce you to the space that the scene is set in. I never thought it looked like they wanted to "show-off" their cool camera skills.
It's just great that they added some creativity to it instead of following along with the basic camera movements you see in every other movie.
Anyways, I think I gotta watch this again soon, I really enjoyed watching it. The comedy was brilliantly quirky and weird and the characters were all quite interesting to watch.

Really good movie. Probably one of the more normal-ish characters Depp has played, by comparison. He was great in this, but when isn’t he? I did not see that twist coming! A twist like an M.Night Shyamalan film, but better because it’s Stephen King! (I love MNS too.) After watching your review I wanna watch it again now! 🙂
