I wasn't bullied at school, but I was excluded. It hurts. I never liked activities where the teacher let us choose our own groups.

I'm soooo late to your comment so my apologies for chiming in....but I just had to say that I absolutely dreaded lunch. Just the thought of sitting alone or with people who actively ignore me in a room full of the entire grade gives me flashbacks 👎👎
As long as getting used to it, I feel nothing, but someday when I suddenly think of it, I start crying.

I can relate to this so much! I truly put myself out there, try to engage with people, converse & be as genuine as I can be. But for some reason, people never seem to interact with me first. They easily start a conversation with the next person, can talk with each other for hours and hours. And this honestly shuts me down, makes me feel smaller and smaller.

Seeing people and bringing them into existence...that is so powerful! I know that the pain of feeling insignificant and invisible has made me treat others that way unfortunately
I understand. I did the same thing because they are doing it to me. But yes it's not right. Let's change it
Thank you so much for bringing awareness to this! It is definitely something I have felt, and lived with my whole life. It is painful, but it takes courage to feel that pain and it makes you stronger. It makes you want to make sure other people don't feel that way. And the people who we think may not feel this way, we're probably totally wrong. Thank you again.
Chelsey Rueth Great point you made. And what’s even more difficult is talking about it. People don’t put themselves in the person’s (who is feeling this pain) shoes when making an observation. They will often accuse the individual of being too sensitive, or taking things too seriously. Then will advise such individual that he or she should not worry about it and get over it. But people cannot just switch their emotions like that.
Watched this talk some years ago and it helped me so much to pinpoint the exact thing that was making me feel bad in social environments: The importance of being seen. The "I see you" message that is introduced here is huge and should be a common therapy method.
Just stumbled on this talk again after years and I'm surprised it only has about 600 likes. More people need to see and understand this talk!
It's not a matter if it hurts, this brutal behavior will destroy your professional life, they will do everything to make you quit, get fired, become mediocre, etc. So don't quit, and the less you speak the better and do your work and make a journal, document everything and take legal action.

I was excluded by my own family as well as at school and by most other people. There was nothing weird about me other than not playing those power games most people play from a very young age. I still don't get why the social environment needs to be such a permanent warzone.

I really enjoyed this talk as I've experienced rejection and exclusion for a long time in my young life. I appreciate this. I just need to correct the South African isiZulu greeting as it was incorrect - I'm from South Africa by the way. The greating is pronounced sa-woo-bona (sawubona) not sawabona. And the response is not sikhona. After sawubona, one asks 'unjani'(singular) or 'ninjani' (plural) which means 'how are you?'. Then the next person(s) will respond by saying 'sikhona' meaning 'we are here' or 'ngiyaphila' (singular) or 'siyaphila'(plural) meaning 'I am alive' or 'we are alive'

my brother and his fiance are leaving me out of their wedding party has hurt me. I am groom's only sibling. He talks to me but they left me out. Not nice. If i see direct exclusion from photos and directly they dont let me in a single photo while mom and dad are, i am going to lose it.
This Lady is really something. Smarts, looks and a huge, brave heart. I don't know how or why she does it but she's my new hero.

Women suffer more by social exclusion. I'm happy to see that more and more awareness are coming in general population in this regard. This is a global pandemic. This knowledge must come to the third world countries as well. The developing countries are working hard, trying to reach a standard goal, people wish to up level their lives but with difficulties like this it's hard to reach anywhere. Most of us are completely unaware of these traits and wandering blindly, have no clue what is happening with us.....🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I can relate to this, family, friends, society, “princess dark cloud” was my nickname, from a young age. My defense mechanism was to exclude myself. I really wish i could hear what she was saying!!

I recently told a long-time friend (26 years) that their actions make me feel marginalized.
I told them I'd no longer invite them on activities--but, I'll be receptive if they reach out to me.
I've already planned to replace that time with others.
