    Imo, Slick Rick is the 80s GOAT. He's one of the greatest storytellers in hip-hop history, his influence is undeniable, and his flow doesn't sound dated at all. La Di Da Di alone has been sampled more than 500 times. Whether people realize it or not, their favourite rapper lives under the shadow of Rick the Ruler.

    • @aaronmack9958
      @aaronmack9958 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I totally agree was just listening to lick the balls. The show and la do da do cemented him as an all time great, The rulers back took him to 🐐. That was the beginning of the next generation. Not a lot of James brown. The music was original. He had some krs 1 rakim and told stories. He had some LL in his bragging. Big Daddy with the lyrics. The sound was totally different teenage love was cool. young world was way ahead of it's time. His flow was amazing for years I thought there was two guys rapping. Biggie used that style in gimme the loot. Unfortunately the rulers reign was so short. Behind bars was good but I think he was too distracted with all the legal stuff to really bring out his best. I feel we missed out on his best stuff but still my favorite artist of the eighties.

    • @YJSho_Nuff_
      @YJSho_Nuff_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Its crazy cause no one really talks about storytellers. They paint vivid pictures in your mind of things that most times give a relative narrative. Some of my all time favs are Slick Rick, Nas, Raekwon, the GZA, Biggie Smalls, Murs, Del tha Funky Homosapien, Kool Keith, Canibus, MF Doom, Lupe Fiasco. Just to name a few

      @@keithmoran5695 much respect to my Suffolk county strong island resident. I lived about thirty minutes from him and was a friend of my cousin. Definitely the favorite for the heads, but he lacked the personality, originality, and overall commerical appeal of the ruler. I don't think Ra's style aged well either. The ladies didn't really rock him like slick Rick ll or Kane. I seen all them perform, and unfortunately rah was the worst entertainer. He and krs were great rappers that you take your boys to see, but take your girl out there to see rakim krs and she's not impressed. Lol. Rakim like krs lacked versatility also. Rakim was probably the best of the head nodders, but the cool was all he came with. Definitely influenced many that followed and can see why you would feel that way.

I feel like he should be in everyone’s top 10.... this man was really the first young rap superstar (we got young kids coming out to this day). He has more hits than probably any rapper not named Eminem, Drake, or Lil Wayne... his longevity is underrated nobody talks about how he came out with a bang in 84 and was making hits well into the 2000s... he has influence Eminem , 2Pac , 50 and pretty much any rapper that came out after him... he has his respect public enemy and another artist in the 80s (I can’t think of who right now) has said he should’ve been the FIRST rap solo artist in the R&R Hall of game NOT Tupac.. and he has nice lyrics as well he’s not bad at all and even lowkey ended Kool Moe Dee’s career... Mama said knock you out is lowkey a diss to him but that song is so popular nobody even thinks about it like that ... well he should be on the top of everyone’s list.. LL Cool J is hard as hell

I couldn't name my 3 fave M.Cs from this time but L.L ,Rakim,Kane ,G Rap and KRS (and that's not including Slick Rick,Moe D (who bridged 2 generations of Hip Hop),Chuck D) but please don't ask me to take one out.

      13 and Good was a caution track. It was happening back then, and still exists to this day. Why do most of you clowns think KRS-ONE actually did that? Come on now. Nobody ever mentions Biz Markie's Young Girl Bluez track do they? Another track caution warning to the men.

    • @plotshift
      @plotshift 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marvin7533 Where's the warning? He doesn't ever tell it from a cautionary place. Literally in the song he's bragging to his buddies about hooking up with a 13 year old girl, finding out she's 13, then having sex with her and being proud of it anyway.
      There wasn't any moral, he literally says "there is no moral" at the end of the song. He doesn't have any crisis of conscience, no fork-in-the-road moment, in fact he doubles down by having an out of nowhere twist where he's propositioned by the girl's father for sex.
      Even in the music video, he's appealing to the audience about how it was worth it even if he gets beaten in jail for it.
      Also, there's still the matter of "Say Gal" where he's literally laughing at women who've been victims of rape because he thinks they made it up and wanted whatever they got. He wrote that one specifically about Mike Tyson's rape case and I'd love to hear the nuanced defense of victim-shaming.
      "All you see in the newspapers nowadays
      Is nuff gal talk bout them been raped
      And them been molested and them been beat up
      And them been all sexed up, SEEN? Hahahah
      But now KRS-One comes to give you this
      SAY GAL! Why you comin to the hotel?
      SAY GAL! You wan good sex we can tell?
      SAY GAL! Your skirt so tight it hug your butt
      SAY GAL! You're lookin like you really want.. want..
      GAL! Don't tell me you can wear what you want
      Cause nowadays a most dem gal a dressin like a slut
      SAY GAL! A woman must, respect herself
      SAY GAL! So leave the see-through dress upon the shelf"
      'The Teacher', educating us all that women who dress a certain way are asking for it.
