For real. I didn’t feel that way with Breaking Bad’s characters outside of Walt, Jesse, and Mike, Saul and Gus. The others just have no depth outside of serving their roles. Better Call Saul fixes that major flaw, I mean Howard, Chuck, Kim, Lalo, Nacho, I can’t forget these characters and what they bring to the table.

I think that's just his own lunch. But I do love the way he goes right up to the front desk and puts his feet up, unlike the other Salamancas who are always sitting stoically behind their subordinate to show how important they area. Lalo exudes such confidence and control that he doesn't need to prove anything.
I love how Lalo is friendly and charming in this entire scene yet your able to learn that he is the most dangerous man we've been introduced to so far.

Lalo Salamanca had the same effect on Better Call Saul that Richie Aprile had on The Sopranos. Before him, the show was simply good, but after him, it became unbelievably excellent.
@@tonygreen4896 I actually liked it. It was unexpected for everyone both in the show and irl. Also I love how when we see him for the first time he threatens Chris for beating Adriana and then gets shot for beating Janice.
Except I believe Lalo is much better. He's smarter and more capable than Richie, which is what Richie wanted to be but just didn't cut it. But then again Lalo doesn't have the jaackeeet so Richie is probably tougher lol.
This is what makes Better Call Saul so good. Everything is subtle and there is very little exposition. Characters reading each other in scenes and how such tiny details are significant in the greater aspect is amazing.
1:18 incredible foreshadowing. Lalo’s arrival spelled death for Nacho. I love that even here before we see Lalo’s savagery and ruthlessness it’s clear that behind his smiles and friendliness there’s malice and danger radiating from him. Macho and gruff psychos like Tuco are intimidating, but calm, cool, and meticulous people like Lalo are a much greater threat. Lalo’s only flaw was himself. He outsmarted everyone but he got too cocky at the end. A fate Gus would later share…
@@valentinpranno5636 It's a common expression everywhere, that's what makes it possible foreshadowing, it would be weird if he said "you're going to die" with no context.
He wasn’t exactly cocky in his final moments, he calculated his time to a minute - it’s just that Gus outsmarted him in a way that no one could’ve possibly predicted.
His death was foreshadowed when he became a drug dealer. As Mike says you choose to be in the game, so that means you must accept the consequences. He's just lucky his father wasn't killed along with him. Again, thanks to Mike.
The thing that makes Lalo scary is how he can switch like a light. One moment he’s kind and happy then the next moment he’s serious and ready to kill you but doesn’t show any real emotion like anger. Like the “tell me again” scene is a perfect example of this how he confronts Saul but is calm with him at the beginning but his demeanour slowly changes and that happiness in his face and mood changes and you can see he’s serious, which leads us on the edge of our seat with suspense. Amazing acting performance from Tony Dalton
Yet another perfect casting for the Breaking Bad universe. This guy is brilliant. Whoever did the casting for BCS of BB deserves some kind of recognition. Great casting all the way down.
i think part of the reason the casting in these shows is so good is because the people casted influence the characters and by effect the story. aaron paul's performance as jesse was so good that they kept him for the rest of the series
@@scrowfunk8109 That’s a very good point, I agree. Although in this case, Lalo had to be significant in the story because Saul mentions him in Breaking Bad. So they needed to cast someone great. Whereas they wanted to kill Jesse’s character in the first season of Breaking Bad.
I’m super late but it never really sat well with me that he’s just another “cousin” of the family. He looks old enough to be Hectors younger brother it’d be better if he was an uncle to Tuco and the twins rather than their cousins. That’s my only nit pick otherwise he’s a great character and great actor
Most charismatic character on the show IMO. He’s a complete psycho but ya can’t help but be affected by his charm. Tony Dalton did an amazing job as Lalo.

@@danielamaris6367 to be sure, and i havent seen the full series, but this is quite the forshadowing thing to say to someone on a gangster show when you meet them...
@@DeathsquadDemongods Yea I agree it could be foreshadowing. But a lot of people that don’t know spanish think he just told him that out of nowhere. And there was a reason to tell him, it was related to the food, like praising himself.
The craziest thing about Lalo is that you know he's an evil man and a threat to everyone to all the main characters but you just can't find in yourself to truly hate the guy. Lalo can charm the shoes off of anyone. He will either be your best friend or your worst enemy. There is no in-between. The most charismatic villian I've ever seen on a TV show, I'm lowkey rooting for him but he is most likely going to be killed off in season 6 considering how deep he's gone.
"It will be like I'm not even here". While his music is playing throughout the restaurant, symbolising how HUGE of an impact he's going to have. Damn, one of the best TV villains ever created.
It seems slightly odd that Lalo first appearance is just the end of Season 4. It feels like he has always been there - charming and crazy and dangerous like hell.
If you had a cookout, Lalo just seems like he'd be the life of the party even if he was there to kill everyone. Nah... _especially_ if he was there to kill everyone.
To see him looking over his shoulder not once but twice in this scene before entering the restaurant is part of the small things about this show I really appreciate - attention to detail.
As a mexican, I can't help to feel proud of Tony Dalton, a mexican actor that is being praised as one of the best characters in BCS. Keep wowing them, man!! Edit: apparently, Tony Dalton was born in Tx, still, most of his roles have been in Mexican movies and series. (At least that's how I got to know him). He might not had been born in Mexico, but his blood surely is mexican.
I love that last shot as Lalo steps In to frame with Varga looking out from the kitchen, but it's almost feels like the frame represents what Varga is used to and suddenly the boisterous Lalo has just entered it , like Varga looking out at the landscape and realising shits about to get real. I think it speaks to the outstanding direction of Vince Gilligan and co.
0:41 always struck me as a very Tarantinoesque scene. The music blaring, the tension, the reach for the gun, and pinché Lalo singing and cooking like he doesn't have a care in the world! 😂 One BAMF
Gus- “Mike, please meet my associate, Eduardo” Mike- “are you representing Eduardo Salamanca Aka “Jorge De Guzman” Both in season 5, I’m sure there’s more but those are the ones I can think of. You should rewatch the show.
I seriously wish lalo was in the show more. He’s quickly become my favourite character in the BB universe (though I love mike and jimmy too almost as much). But he came in late season 4, and has been absent for most of season 6. Obviously the writing and story requires he not be as present at the moment. But Seriously, every time he’s on screen I can’t stop smiling. And every moment he’s not on screen, I find myself constantly asking when we’re gonna see him again. Brilliant fukn character. Tony dalton deserves an Emmy.
Obviously Dalton knocks it out of the park here with this intro, but credit has to be given to Michael Mando in his delivery of his lines in this scene. Between this and his eventual meeting with Don Eladio, he really knows how to toe the line of being outwardly respectful, while still clearly showing inner emotional tension. The way he delivers the lines "The Salamanca family" and "What are you doing here?" is just perfect. Simple, clean dialogue that conveys everything you need to know about how Nacho sees Lalo.
Vince Gilligan really knows how to write a character introduction scene. And Tony Dalton does such a good job playing the absurd confidence and hubris of criminal lord.
I remember watching this first time... And I kept wondering who is this new actor... He grabs your attention and won't let you take your eyes off when he is on screen. He has normal physical appearance, yet he really has imposing screen presence. Brilliant casting and acting.
Lalo is the culmination of all the previous Salamancas and is the most dangerous out of all of them. The unpredictability of Tuco. The ruthlessness of the twins. The cunning of Hector. It’s no wonder Gus put out all the stops to kill him before he could expose his entire operation.
Shame how he died lalo’s downfall was his cockiness just like gus later in breaking bad . lalo wanted to be a showman and record Gus final moments when he could’ve just shot him and taken pics of the lab but no lalo had to make a show out of it I guess even in the end he never took anything serious not even his own death . still cool one man almost took down fring’s operation not even Walter did that on his own he needed hector for the bomb on Gus , lalo on his own was taking it to Gus and Mike 😂 and even a traitor in nacho !!!!

Lalo is the best villain of any audiovisual productions, couldn't sleep watching this season. Gus is good, but still predictable as his character lines are always too fitted. Lalo my friend, he could be just any uncle you meet at sunday family dinner
@@nikiduncan396 alright the box cutter moment was terrifying indeed, thanks for the remind 😂
@@nikiduncan396 Gus is definitely a better written character and has more depth but damn Lalo is so entertaining it's impossible not to love him. He steals the show every time he's on screen.
The way he says "you're gonna die" after telling him how delicious the food is is chilling now that we know Nacho's fate.
Yet Nacho says "No thank you" =/.
Isnt it everyones fate?

0:20 Nacho: Why do I hear Boss Music?
1:18 he wasn’t joking
Love the detail that Nacho didn't ate the food that Lalo offers because of distrust, and inmediately then, Lalo tells him that indeed he is an intelligent man. That demostrarte how pro-players are both of them.
The thing that I love the most about BCS is that you can feel every character in your heart, from Jimmy to Howard to Lalo, This show is so well written
From jimmy to howard to lalo 💀
2:36 What a boss, he even takes the dish to crazy 8 and give him pat on the back. Rich powerful and treats his employees with respect!
He actually does that because his sense of pride and power is so high that he treats his employees like puppy’s that he can put down at anytime he wants.
@@NothingAssigned or coz hes actually nice to guys who are "on his team", man gave Magnum PI and double of usual money wrapped up to Don Eladio just to introduce Nacho
Perfect nemesis for Gus Fring
Dzemil Mehovic I think, moreover, that scene is supposed to be him “subtly” one-upping Fring’s payment. That’s why he makes a comment praising Fring’s money right before he pulls out the car stunt. He’s charismatic, but he’s all about control.
I think that's just his own lunch. But I do love the way he goes right up to the front desk and puts his feet up, unlike the other Salamancas who are always sitting stoically behind their subordinate to show how important they area. Lalo exudes such confidence and control that he doesn't need to prove anything.
"You're gonna die."
It's obvious he's talking about the food but that's some pretty unnerving foreshadowing
I think he meant it both ways.
"....somebody's going to prison. It's just a matter of who."
I love how Lalo is friendly and charming in this entire scene yet your able to learn that he is the most dangerous man we've been introduced to so far.
The fact that Tony Dalton ACTUALLY speaks Spanish on top of all his other talent is incredible for native speakers whose immersion is thrown off every time Gus or Hector(probably the worst on the show) speak Spanish.
Giancarlo Esposito is the worst Spanish speaker by far. Even Hector is a bit better than him.
well i mean niether of those actors are of spanish descent so it makes sense
In fairness Mark Margolis was only cast to grimace and drool.
Let me guess, mikes Russian accent doesn’t stop your immersion?
@@jeffb1430 yeah, that's what i think! as for esposito and the others...i don't really get it why they wouldn't cast native speakers considering the characters and connections to mexico. tony dalton is the best example that they exist and i think they would add so much more authenticity to everything
Lalo Salamanca had the same effect on Better Call Saul that Richie Aprile had on The Sopranos. Before him, the show was simply good, but after him, it became unbelievably excellent.
Totally true.
I was initially very disappointed they killed Richie off via Janice. I hated that exit for so long!
@@tonygreen4896 I actually liked it. It was unexpected for everyone both in the show and irl. Also I love how when we see him for the first time he threatens Chris for beating Adriana and then gets shot for beating Janice.
Are you suggesting Lalo is weirdly physically small for how intimidating he is to others? He seems tall to me.
Except I believe Lalo is much better. He's smarter and more capable than Richie, which is what Richie wanted to be but just didn't cut it. But then again Lalo doesn't have the jaackeeet so Richie is probably tougher lol.
@@hrossman7272 That's funny
I dont think its an actual foreshadowing, that is a pretty common expression here in latinoamerica
Again, thanks to Mike.
he didnt get cocky, he just got outsmarted fair and square
@@scrowfunk8109
Yeah, like how they let Jonathan Banks form Mike's character on his own and ofc they let Tony Dalton do his own thing with Lalo
I’m super late but it never really sat well with me that he’s just another “cousin” of the family. He looks old enough to be Hectors younger brother it’d be better if he was an uncle to Tuco and the twins rather than their cousins. That’s my only nit pick otherwise he’s a great character and great actor
I love how he moves in a sort of cartoony way, never staying still, with his iconic song in the background, almost as if it’s a scene from Pixar
1:19 "You're gonna die." After the S5 season finale, this seems to be quite foreshadow that no one saw coming.

It's funny how Lalo just shows up. Ignacio has no idea who he is. Then Lalo tells him he has made something special just for him. Hands it to him and says "you're gonna die". Lol 😆
In Mexico it’s completely normal to tell that to someone before they experience something really good, specially before tasting good food
"Está que te mueres" o "te vas a morir (de gusto) is Spanish coloquiall for "really really good"
So what does "here you are, and you are" mean? 2:04
The craziest thing about Lalo is that you know he's an evil man and a threat to everyone to all the main characters but you just can't find in yourself to truly hate the guy. Lalo can charm the shoes off of anyone. He will either be your best friend or your worst enemy. There is no in-between. Obviously Dalton knocks it out of the park here with this intro, but credit has to be given to Michael Mando in his delivery of his lines in this scene.
