    Andrew Kevin Walker wrote a masterpiece - no hyperbole here - which has been enjoyed by millions but I had never heard this man's name before. Screenwriting is the most vital and, yet, the most under-appreciated part of filmmaking. Fuck me!

      It's a great point you make. When stories broaden the spectrum of emotions, it gives a break to the audience from possible melodrama, and also creates more satisfaction.

    Great vid! Only one thing: The viliain, Doe, didn't have the 'Tracy' motivation until half way through the film. Tracy wasn't at stake originally. She and David became a thought to him only after Mills runs him off from the crime scene...specifically giving him his name! "Hey I got a right to be here man!"

  • @BlakeThePerson
    @BlakeThePerson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    You're doing excellent work here. These are really thoughtful breakdowns of each movie. I'd be curious to see you look into mistakes, or poorly developed elements in otherwise great films. For example, the love story between Neo and Trinity is very poorly developed in The Matrix and the story essentially hinges on that relationship. It's just interesting to see how a movie can survive and even thrive despite being imperfect in some respects.

    • @ScriptSleuth
      @ScriptSleuth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for the kind words, Blake. I totally hear what you're saying in that there's a lot to be learned from the flaws in certain stories. I'll keep it in mind.

    This is the first video of yours I've seen. You did a really magnificent job here! I especially love the "scene hooks" portion. Overall Seven doesn't work for me as well as most people, but I do find the ending to be perfect (starting with John Doe turning himself in). So glad the director & cast fought back against the studio, and won!

  • @MCOult
    @MCOult ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wonderful video! Thank you!
    "Seven" didn't do very well at the box office, although Mr. Walker's script is good. As pointed out, much of that was due to the unsettling nature of the movie (gore, etc.), but I think a large part had to do with the casting: Morgan Freeman is great, as always, but neither Mr. Pitt nor Miss Paltrow is right for the parts. Pitt played his character like he was a rookie cop, fresh out of high school and the police academy: childish, adolescently emotional, and out of control, rather than the experienced detective he is claimed to be; Paltrow's character was also childish, but Miss Paltrow seemed to do little more than "phone in" her work: no chemistry between her and either leading man. (In Paltrow's defense, her character is weak; Miss Paltrow might not have liked the character -- or possibly the way Fincher directed her to portray the character.)
    More (or better) character development would have helped, along with grownup portrayals of the Pitt and Paltrow characters.
    It's a mostly watchable movie. But it could have been exceptional.

      That's a good question. I can recall only one time with the Gluttony victim. It made me think of other movies like The Silence of the Lambs and Chinatown. They seem to limit the morgue scenes to only one. Perhaps the audience doesn't want to see that too often.

    @dennydowling2169 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    While I did enjoy this movie, the script is weak when it comes to the last two sins. It was hard enough to accept the premise for the pride victim, but envy and wrath had to be totally contrived. The writer simply could not come up with a good way to invent people who would be believable targets for John Doe's wrath. (See, he didn't really need David for that sin.) What was the killer going to do for the last two sins without the non-natural injection of David Mills and his family into the story line?

    • @ScriptSleuth
      @ScriptSleuth  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a good point you make. Does that negate the value of the rest of the story?

    • @dennydowling2169
      @dennydowling2169 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ScriptSleuth I think it’s still a good story but the Seven Deadly Sins are really not execution-worthy in the first place so using them as a basis for murder was always going to be difficult.

    • @ScriptSleuth
      @ScriptSleuth  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree it can feel a bit contrived towards the end. However, I think it's a brilliant way of constantly pushing our attention to the future of the narrative, because we want to see how all seven deadly sins will be carried out. In that sense, they managed to capture our attention for an entire movie, which is half the battle.
