Damped Light Braking BLHeli 13.1 vs. 14.0

  • BLHeli 14.0 significantly improved braking (damped light) compared to 13.1. This actually created some tuning issues for my copter, as my low-grade ESCs couldn't keep the copter from vibrating when the more aggressive braking was active.

    hey joshua.. ive been watching all your videos.. great btw..and i was wondering if the firmware on the ESC determines if it will have damped light mode or not. im building a zmr250 and the ESCs are blheli 14.2 20a opto.. 1st question is: will this support damped light? and 2nd question is: can u run blheli suite on any esc.. or does it have to be a flashabke ESC..? thanks steve

      The ESC hardware determines whether it supports damped light, not the firmware. Not all ESCs support BLHeli. Since you can get a BLHeli_S ESC for like $11 these days, you really have to be hard up for cash to need to shoehorn BLHeli onto anything inferior.

      Joshua Bardwell... thanks for the really fast reply so here's my issue I ordered a motor and ESC combo off of eBay and I have the rhd 2300 KV Motors with sn20a with BL heli 14.2 firmware on the ESC.. here's my issue the ESC only have a little circle gray sticker that says sn20a I was just wondering if you knew what these ESC Czar and if they support damped light or not.
      Also one more thing if they do not support damped light mode do you have an ESC that will go with my Motors that could support damped light in one shot. thanks

      +Steve Maratea they're sn20 ESC's and they do support damped light. Six months or a year ago they were great ESC's. Now not so much
      Check out Racerstar blheli_s.

      Joshua Bardwell.. thank you for the reply... i dont mean to keep asking questions.. but your knowledge about this is amazing.. my last one is: am i able to download blheli suite and adjust the damped light feature for the sn20 ESCs?
      thanks again

      +Steve Maratea yes.

    Can you tell me if dampened light should still be implemented into a current build drone, especially when using air mode? (Circa 2019)
    Thanks, I can not believe how FEW comments this video has over your latest videos!
    Thanks for what you do btw. Obvious you do it well!

      Yes damped light is still used in modern blheli

    hmm. the throttle response looks so damn slow. !?
    Is the 14.* firmware much better than 13.1 ? I havent flashed mine yet. Is there any performace gains in terms of thrust with the 14,1 over the 13,1?
    obviously the braking looks much better.
    thanks breh

      +klikk0 I was on a CPPM receiver at that time, which has something like 80 ms of additional latency due to three-sample averaging. That may be related.

      +Joshua Bardwell hm really? i know s.bus is kinda the "new" thing, but running ppm myself i cant say that i really feel any lag. its rather very nice. guess it just shows better on video in slow mo. lol
      But what about the firmwares? is there better thrust?

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +klikk0 14.x makes more thrust than 13.x all else equal. It is much more aggressive all around.
      The difference in SBUS latency is subtle. You don't notice that you're compensating for CPPM latency until it's gone. It feels a bit like you are flying with P gains too low, and suddenly you tightened them up. It's not day-and-night but it's definitely there. On CPPM, you train yourself to anticipate turns slightly, for example. On SBUS this is less necessary and you are able to be more responsive and spontaneous.

      +Joshua Bardwell ah ok. thanks! Guess ill have to get a x4r-ii and check it out!
      btw, have you tested out the little bee`s? If so, how do they compare to the sn20a? Just watched a thrust test here on youtube and was kinda shocked that the sn20a outperformed the little bee`s. Made me kinda mad to be honest lol.

      Thrust tests are not the be-all end-all of performance, although I also would be surprised if the Littlebee didn't out-thrust the SN20. The Littlebees have much, much better braking and overall response than SN20. They are just on a whole other level. Personally, I will always buy SiLabs ESCs from now on, with dedicated gate drivers if at all possible. This is the direction that ESC design for multicopters is going, with the KISS (who was first to use a dedicated gate driver--credit where credit is due), now the Littlebee, and soon the UBAD Beast ESC.

    Why is the motors starting to work after a 50% throttle punch 🤔🤔🤔

    Hey did you see a difference in the heat of the motors as in getting hotter on 14.0?
    Thanks G

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      1LN Not really, but I'm not running on the edge anyway. I have read that motor timing makes a MUCH bigger difference in 14.0 than in previous revisions, so you don't want to run the timing too high unless you are sure you aren't going to toast them. On the other hand, you can get a lot more performance from the motors if they can handle higher timing.

      Joshua Bardwell Hey thanks for the fast reply... I had mine set to med/hi and then tried med and my motors got way to hot, so i thought i did something wrong , maybe i should re test low timing and see, this is my first time trying oneshot and cleanflight, my esc are the BS12a and emax mt2204 2300kv, what do you think ?
      Thanks G

      The optimal tuning will vary. It's not as simple as higher or lower.

    using Damping light now my motors get burning hot testing with no props on can you help

      +michael goodman usually this means your prop nuts are too long and they're touching the motor windings.
