As a Minnesotan, frostbite is kind of like quicksand, I grew up thinking it was going to be way more an issue than it actually is. We do a good job with infrastructure up here to handle the cold. In my City you can get around the entire downtown in walking subways and skyways, you never have to go outside. You can get from your hotel to lunch, to the hospital, and shopping without ever going outside.

Alaska has changed a lot since the 1970's, which shows my age. My brother lived there in the 70's and people were not a bit violent and very trusting. To give you an example he would go hunting and in Alaska there are so many desolate wilderness areas, many places you had to go by small planes to get there, people would have their cabins set up with food and shelter for hunters, they never met, to go into when they were hunting in these places. My Brother eventually moved to Missouri and some years later went back to Alaska for a visit. He said there was so much change there now and the days of trust was now gone. He would never go back.

Alaska is these things by capita. In the seventies, with an increase in employment and money came those seeking it. Not necessarily all with good intentions. Also, if you are not used to the seasonal darkness, you will be introduced to "cabin fever" depression. You need to keep active. And as the money drops, so does the population. Coincidental? I think not. I just returned after having left for six years in Florida. So happy to be back in this beautiful state.

Utah here. I'm not surprised at the Church attendance. We also often have the worst air in the country. When Northern California burns, the smoke drifts east and gets trapped by our mountains, which happen to be just east of where 80% of the state lives. There's no where for the smoke to go, so we just breathe it. This year we had the worst air in the WORLD several times.

Kansas is flat, you can stand in the middle and look in every direction and it looks exactly the same, there is no difference in the scenery anywhere. With Hawaii being an island, there is no place to go and difficult to get anything there.

One time I was following my friend to the border, and felt absolute panic when I lost her while in a dip, and she had gone over the next hill. Silly, I know 😁... but KS isn't quite flat. Most recently live in eastern MT, and the argument for there is similar, very flat. However, you'll be driving along and suddenly there will be a gorge that a bridge has been built over. These gorges are water collectors, and funnel water to the nearest river. They come in different styles, and are often filled with trees that the Plains do not have.

And Florida flat? Flatter than Kansas? Geez, some midwestern states are like table-tops! And by the way, that Education in Ireland thing sounded awfully good, if only I were younger again...

There was a time when I would have jumped at studying overseas. Statistics can be misleading. If one very empty state has a bad day at the factory and 4 people are hurt that is worse than a populated state that saw 400 people get hurt. I can confirm that Rhode Island has the worst roads. Driving home from visiting family in New Jersey (best tasting corn and tomatoes) we knew we had finally reached RI when we hit our first pothole on the road.
    We cheered! Home!
(This was in the early 1960s, so little has changed.)
The tiniest state in the Union, RI did not need to declare Independence from England, as we were independent already by land grant.
Lil' Rhody also has the longest name: Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.
It's an absolutely beautiful state. It has the grandest mansions, all in a row called " Summer Cottages", in Newport.
The clam cakes are the best in New England.

Why not go for the whole shebang; let's skip NY as well!
I remember the tolls, the NY traffic and the signs that changed from green to blue.(early 60s)
My favorite part of that long drive was going over the Tappanzee Bridge.
We were told that if we touched the car window, at the exact center of the bridge, we would get an electric shock.
I suspect this was a way to temporarily quell our constant whining,
      "Are we there yet?"
