Pay a visit with us to Merry Olde India as we watch a Bollywood classic: the politically-charged musical romance Aandhi!
In Seen It, we flip our own wigs talking about cinematic mindbenders such as Holy Motors and Primer. And Matt makes an exciting announcement at the end.
All film footage is used in accordance with fair use and US copyright law. All music in the show is used with full permission of the composer.
Thanks for all the great comments. Keep em coming! If you watch one of the movies we discuss, let us know what you thought of it.
Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. Matt choses the movie and Craig doesn't know what it is until the cameras start rolling, so none of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
Movie announced on facebook before every new episode. Get the movie and follow along. We do discuss the entire movie, including the ending, so if you want to avoid spoilers, watch the movie first.
The only thing about rewatching this episode (its great as always) is the fact they titled it "Bollywood!" and not "Aandhi". Weird choice IMO
One day I'm going to make a movie that's just Grand Central Station being destroyed over and over again.
I love how Seen It has become a collection of short reviews rather than just a list as in earlier videos.
It has been wonderful seeing your opinions on movies that don't fit WttB's criteria. Like an honorable mentions after seeing this episodes winner.
Wow! Glad you guys liked the cardboard Fitzcarraldo so much! As soon as I saw it I immediately thought of you guys. Keep up the great work - this is my favorite show on TH-cam!
I know. I'm lousy at color correction. I'm learning as I go. If you have any tips, feel free to let me know.
Have you guys seen Ed Wood. It has a lot of sadness and comedy but the ending makes you feel good and I think it's a great movie. If you come from a filmmaking background, you will probably relate to it.
I love the look on Craig's face as Matt reads through that list of movies
You lovely dudes should totally watch Brokeback Mountain. It would be a great movie for the show; epic cinematography, excellent dialogue and interesting moral questions. It's my favorite love story of all time, and it truly surpasses all of the media hype it was given in my opinion. Keep it up guys!
being a little Bengali,Canadian abomination of a chap i grew up with some very strange Bollywood movies and this made my... night i guess seeing as i was watching this at 11 pm but whatever. i hope you do more of these Bollywood movies as they are gonna feel like a another plane of existence
Asifnewaz Mohammad im just a regular Canadian abomination, and yet saturday morning Omni channel bollywood movies made up most of my childhood as well xD
Woah, Craig's hair is looking mighty fine ;)
OMG what a great theme to look forward to! i hope you pick Logan's Run...
Some Indian movies I feel the need to suggest
Sholay
Bajirao Mastani
Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela
Bahubali
and Padmavat
Seriously Matt?? You haven't seen Logan's Run??? It's classic science fiction eye candy with the coolest laser guns in cinematic history!! Watch it!! I command thee!!
Oh I absolutely loved Logan's Run, please Craig pick that one!
I'd second "Endhiran" for next Bollywood movie, it's wildly fun and over the top strange. In the more straight Bollywood, there's also "Ram Leela", which is basically Bollywood Romeo and Juliet with two very appealing leads and a lot of really good dance numbers! "Om Shanti Om" is also a lot of fun, very meta, and is a Bollywood about Bollywood (with some reincarnation/doomed romance stuff tossed in for good measure).
Keep it up guys! Love these!
Also, more Craig on Beer and Board Games!
Barbarella! That movie made me fall in love with Jane Fonda.
Starship troopers was a pretty good watch. Good mix of romance an epic battle scenes! I love this show and you guys prove that there is more to TH-cam than watching cats trying to run up slides
How come this show isn't on once a week, seriously you guys! Its one of the best TH-cam shows, funny and entertaining, it needs to be on every week, Beer and Board games is weekly, we need more Welcome to the Basement! :D
Please do Fantastic Planet! Would be such a great fit for the show, in my humble opinion.
Starship Troopers! Please it is one of my favorite sci-fi movies. The director is awesome and I love the makeup effects. They both have quite the pedigree coming into it and create magic together.
Please, Starship Troopers!
I get a happy feeling in my belly whenever I see Craig. He's just adorable! Lol, anyways loved the show guys, gonna watch a bollywood movie now
WOW ! Robin Frohardt's cardboard art shown is amazing. The cardboard people blew me away.
Starship Troopers! One of my favorite movies of all time!
Soylent Green!!!!!! I can watch it through you since I can't ever find it anywhere! Love this show.
Fantastic planet, wasn't able to finish that movie, love to see you sit rude it and git me in the mood to watch it again
I'm so happy that you guys decided on watching a Bollywood movie. I personally have never heard of this movie, but never the less - so pleased to see Bollywood getting some recognition in 'The Basement'. You should watch a movie called 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna' its a more recent movie set entirely in New York, a lot less tacky, less random song and dance numbers You'd enjoy it!.
And Matt, your Hindi isn't as bad as you think! Mwah. x
As an Indian, I'm so happy that you guys decided on watching a Bollywood movie. I personally have never heard of this movie, but never the less - so pleased to see Bollywood getting some recognition in 'The Basement'. You should watch a movie called 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna' its a more recent movie set entirely in New York, a lot less tacky, less random song and dance and generally just a better movie.
And Matt, your Hindi isn't as bad as you think! x
I have to recommend Soylent Green. It's one of my favorite movies for a number of reasons. I'd love to hear what you guys think of the ending though. Personally, I feel it's the weakest part of an otherwise fantastic movie.
Great job fellas. Thank you.
PLEASE do Starship Troopers!!! I grew up watching that movie and would love to see someone experience it for the first time. I can't really critic it because I'm so close to it, it would be fascinating to see what two (or one if Craig's seen it) experienced film connoisseurs think of it having never seen it before.
Fantastic Planet, I want to do it so much that I'm asking this every time I'm on youtube.
Funny that Starship Troopers should come up when I was watching it on tv a few hours ago! So I'd love to see that being watched
Your hindi was good enough for the first time
STARSHIP TROOPERS! I'd love to see your reactions and commentary on that.
The 2 Bollywood movies I highly recommend checking out are "Magadheera" and "Endhiran". Both are amazingly over-the-top. Lots of crazy epic action scenes and yes, plenty of singing and dancing. "Endhiran" is like the Indian Robocop/Terminator.
Great sound mixing! Just like the Who Live at Leeds!
I love this show. My favorite. Have you seen 1980s Fortress. About the Australian school kids and teacher get kidnapped and fight back.
That is quite the list of sci-fi films, Matt! Can't wait to see what Craig picks for July. I also wanted to know if you have seen the 1984 film "Dune". It is one of my all time favorite bad movies. Looking forward to July!
i'm hoping for Logan's Run as I have it but haven't seen it, and will be anxious to so and compare with your thoughts!
Can't wait to see you guys next month. I wonder what movies you'll choose, they're all pretty entertaining.
Thank you for another utterly lovely episode, Matt & Craig :)
Definitely thinking it's a Seen It!, [in fact, I'm more hoping it fits into that category] but might I recommend Buster Keaton's "The General"? Or really ANY Keaton action would be miles past enjoyable (even from the MGM years/Keaton's downfall).
So stoked for July! My personal vote for Sci-Fi July would be Logan's Run
Thanks again, fellas, keep up the great work! :D
Hi! Love the show and wondered if you guys had seen Kirikou and the Sorceress? A jaunty French animated film.
Watch Quatermass and the Pit, it was one of my all time favourites as a kid. Its bad, but in a good way, it's also one of Mark Gatiss's favourite films and that guy knows his Horror/Science fiction. Love this show by the way x
Can't believe you haven't seen some of those sci-fi suggestions. I think Fantastic Planet was on every weekend in the mid/late 80's on Nite Flight. Can't wait for the episode, though. Brang it.
kissing is considered (for lack of a better word) pornographic
I mean in Bollywood
I mean in Bollywood
Soylent Green blew me away!! I highly recommend it. Oh, and Starship Troopers too.
Such a solid list! I actually think Logan's Run is ripe for a remake, as you would say.. but I'd love to hear your thoughts on it all the same.
The two you should watch out of the choices are "Soylent Green" and "Barberella" two movies I believe are up your alley. Also another Sci fi treat you should check out is Krull (1983) if you haven't already this movie also has Liam Neeson in one of his earlier roles before his daughter was "Taken"!
This show is fantastic you guys both Rock.
Can't wait for July's episodes. I'd like to see Logan's Run and Starship Troopers.
I remember seeing this when i was visiting my family in Trinidad
Love you guys! Just a note: Odd color correction throughout this whole episode, both in the movie, and in your shots (particularly the close ups of Craig on the couch).
My suggestion to you is Fantastic planet and Dark Star. Fantastic Planet because it is the most mind browning french film I've ever seen, and Dark Star because I love Carpenter. Though, I'm sure I'll enjoy anything you pick.
im looking forward to the upcoming episdoes, i wonder what will be picked. Logans run looks interesting
Definitely would be interested in seeing you guys do Logan's Run. Still pretty disappointed that you guys didn't do a Kurosawa film (Kagemusha) this month, but y'all are still entertaining nonetheless.
Is the LP behind Craig associated with the movie being watched? I just started noticing them. I believe the last WTTB had Axis Bold As Love.
I was wondering if you ever seen Sukiyaki Western Django and if not could you watch it in the show? It is a Japanese style American western that has Quetin Tarantino.
Dear Matt and Craig, have you ever seen the 2004 movie Immortel (Ad Vitam)? It was written and directed by Enki Bilal, who also wrote and drew the Nikopol comic book trilogy it was based on. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to which characters are portrayed by humans and which were CG. Also, thanks for introducing me to many bizarre and fascinating movies. I'd never even heard of Klaus Kinski before your show.
I was wondering if you guys ever considered doing a sort of "welcome to the basement extended edition", similar to the B and BG live streams, where someone can donate to basically watch the movie with you and get to see your comments from the whole session.
Oo, a sci-fi month! Looking forward to it! Have you ever watched the dystopian gun-fu movie Equilibrium?
Haha I'm from Mumbai and this was loads of fun to watch, also please watch soylent green for sci fi month, love the show thanks
Hey Matt and Craig have either of you seen Undercover Brother? it is so cheesy its amazing I highly reccomend it, its definitly in my top 5 favorite movies.
Gattaca holds a special place on my list. The score alone is worth a viewing!
DARK STAR! I recommended this early on in the series and would love to see it reviewed.
Fantastic Planet is so out there, I'd love to see you guys make heads or tails out of it.
I love Gattaca for some reason, I don't think it's super good but I can't stop thinking about it. Also I hope you choose Logan's Run, just because I've heard it's name but know nothing about it at all.
I remember really liking The Quiet Earth, I wish that were on the list.
Logan's Run and Soylent Green. I myself haven't seen them and I'd like to see them through you guys.
i'd love for you guys to review gattaca and starship troopers!
I want to recommend an amazing foreign romance for you. I am confident you both have not seen it, either... Ima, ai ni yukimasu. It is a Japanese Love story reminiscent of somewhere in time. Craig asked for a good one and this is absolutely one of my favorite movies :)
I grew up with a Logan's Run VHS, but I haven't seen it in a long, long time.
Hi guys,
I really enjoy this show. I know it's a little late for international week, but I have two movie suggestions for you if you ever do an international week again:
No Man's Land, a 2001 film about the Bosnian War in which three soldiers from opposing sides are trapped in a trench because one is laying on a bouncing betty mine.
And
When Father's Away on Business, a 1985 film about man cheating on his wife and then sent to a labor camp with the story told through his son.
Great show!
Waaaatch "The man from earth"! :)
I'd like to see the Starship Troopers review, I finished watching it an hour ago
Oh yeah, you should also pick Gattaca, because that's the only one of those movies I've seen and I'd like to know what you think about it.
Awesome show guys as always
Sci-Fi.. can't wait!!
Gattaca was actually pretty good. I watched it freshman year of high school with my crazy Croatian biology teacher. I remember it being very scientifically interesting and morally thought-provoking. I also remember the love scene as being kind of odd, so maybe that'd be a laugh for you Craig! Does this mean Matt is going on vacation again?
You guys should watch Legend. It is one of Ridley Scotts best! It also features the works of one of my favorite artists and monster designers Miles Teves. One of the best movies ever!
have you seen The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie? it is a bizarre classic made by the master himself, Luis Bunuel. you two seem to love surreal movies (My son my son, Putney Swope) so i'd love to see you see you review this truly great comedy
Fantastic Planet is amazing. It also has an outstanding soundtrack.
One of my all time favorites. So ridiculously funny.
Matt definitely looks like he enjoys doing WTTB more than B&BG. He's always smiling and happy when I see him analyzing films with Craig.
my favorite thing to look for is how different ya'll's hair is styled in each episode...well that, and your crrrazy antics.
That look on Craig's face after the suggestion of Dark Star... What's the story behind that? And I'm hoping that Craig will pick Starship Troopers.
Also: Have you seen Underground by Emir Kusturica? Recommended!
Logan's Run and Gattica. Because I've seen one and have meant to see the other. I'll let you decide which one is which. Fun game!
All I know about Starship Troopers is that Saban actually reused the soldier costumes from that movie in Power Rangers Lost Galaxy.
star ship troopers, it is an amazing piece of cinematography.
Starship Troopers or Quatermass :) Keep up the fine work gentlemen.
Soylent Green and Logan's Run are the closest to "Must See" movies of the bunch but I am sure you will make a good show out of any combination of those 8. That being said, if Soylent and Logan's aren't chosen please keep them on the shortlist for the near future.
I love that movie. loved it so much i actually paid full price for the dvd instead of waiting for it to be on sale
Soylent Green, would really love to see what you'll do with this one.
I've seen all those sci - fi films and they're all pretty good. What about the suggestions I made after your first show: "The Loved One" & "Seconds" & "The Man Who Fell to Earth" (longer 1976 version) which are all terrible?
Kevin Lieber! I love him. He got me into your show.
I'd watch this on TV Good job guys. I really like this :3
speaking of Sci fi: have you seen alphaville? it is a French New wave classic and stars the gorgeous Anna Karina
You guys should watch Beyond The Black Rainbow. It's an amazing, mind blowing, visual experience.
Have you guys seen the move "Donnie Darko"? It's one of my all time favorite movies and it would be awesome to see your guys' opinions on it.
This is going to be a long two weeks because those 8 movies are pretty fantastic. Gattaca turned me into a cineaphile. It has a fantastic cast and does the genre a service.
