  • Throughout his long hike of the Southwest Coast Path, Andy often bemoaned the weight of his pack. So what was in it?
In this video, Andy unpacks the backpack the day after completing the path.

You soon get used to weight on your back too ive noticed. I did hikes with stupid weight when i started out, and even then after a couple of days was smashing it like Andy McNab on the Brecons.

Pretty good load to be honest. You need kit at the end of the day. No such thing as 'lightweight' when doing long distance walks.

Hey Andy, I'm in the early stages of planning my Southwest Coast Path hike (doing the whole thing) for around May/June next year and just came across your videos - they're super helpful, thank you so much! I have quite some experience hiking (with backpack, too) but have mostly stayed in B&Bs/Hostels/Glamping Pods on Campsites so far and have little experience with UK temperatures since I'm from mainland Europe. I would like to take my tent to stay at campsites this time - could you give a rough indication what a "good" sleeping bag temperature rating might be in May/June for someone who likes to stay warm (or what yours was)?

Hi Mayaluisa, I used a sleeping quilt, rather than a sleeping bag, because I find a bag a bit too restrictive. Mine was rated down to 0c and was more than warm enough, with the thermarest neoair xtherm mat to lie on. I’m someone who doesn’t like being too hot in bed, so virtually every night, only had underwear on and was still warm enough. You might get a frost in early May, but after the first week or so, it should stay above freezing and by mid-June, some nights can be quite warm 15+c.

Im doing the whole route from 10th April 2024. I plan to take the bare minimum (Tent, bag, mat, lightweight clothing, poles, and a few other bits like chargers etc). I am guessing the total wieght will be no more than 10kg. Have already started training for it as I am on the heavier side, lol. Wild camping as much as possible, maybe a B+B once a week to keep up moral. It should be good if the weather is on my side. Great set of vidlogs. Looking forward to your next adventure.

Paul, I wish you the best of luck. I think the odd B&B is an absolute necessity just to enable you to have a decent night’s sleep. If you can keep your pack weight down to 10kg then I will be impressed and jealous! Don’t worry about being ‘big boned’. Just ease yourself into the path. There are plenty of steep hills, whichever end you start at, so don’t try and do too many miles for the first few days. Remember, it’s a marathon not a sprint! You will get fitter and lighter the further you go.

@@andyshikes3425 Thanks for the info. I work closely to 30 different charities and raise funds for them, as much as I can. This includes the one ive got - Klinefelters syndrome. As I have all the time in the world to complete it, I will be taking my time, even if i can only manage 3 miles or 13 miles, I will finish it 1 day. Im starting it from Minehead. Travelling day 9th April and staying in the The Old ship around inn. Then starting proper the morning after. I love that you advertised the charity on the back of the bag - I will be doing that to. I have watched so many vidlogs and all I want to do is get there n start, but I know im not ready yet. I have to wait another year, awwww. I will be re-watching yoursover n over again as I think its the best overall. Thank you for doing these logs.
