I have just come across your channel and I have been binge watching your series "Everything Wrong with Genesis." It is absolutely amazing! I love the way you present it. I was raised in the Christian church, and Christianity had fully traumatized my life with its horribly insane teachings that left me asking, What the ...? It is a trauma that doesn't ever leave you no matter how many years have passed. I have to keep reminding myself on a nearly daily basis that I'm not the crazy one here because I can not accept those teachings. I am one of those who dared to ask questions. The one that got me into the most trouble was Easter. Never ask about Easter!!! I have listened to other atheist (which, by the way, I am not - I still have a belief in a higher presence, just not Christian) and some of them are almost as aggressive in their fight against Christianity as Christians are in their fight for it, and they often leave me confused or defensive. You, however, have a completely different way of presenting the Bible and the religion which adds clarity and ration. It's not only educational but so entertaining. I enjoy your videos so much. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and humor with us.

I wish I could give you a hundred likes!
The sarcasm/flippant remarks were brilliant. In Genesis God wasn't the omnipotent, etc. he became later.
Bart Ehrman in his book "God's Problem" shows how God evolved through the Bible into what he is today. Yes, doctrine evolves!

    • @scottstollery2191

      Thanks, I'll check it out.
Remember that one of the versions of the creation story has "let us create. . . ."
Also if God/Yahweh is the ONLY one why do the 10 Commandments say "Thou shalt have no other Gods beside me"? If he's the only one what's the point of that commandment? The lame modern Christian interpretation about it meaning that we shouldn't worship money, fame, cars, etcetera doesn't cut it with me.
Remember also that the doctrine of the Trinity is not taught in the Bible no matter how many apologists try to extract that from the text.
      Thanks again.

    • @scottstollery2191
      @scottstollery2191 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@fpcoleman57 You're welcome. One of the interesting things about the book I mentioned is that it took hundreds of years for early christianity to sort out their doctrine, including things like the trinity, and many devout people were labeled heretics along the way. This obviously continues to this day as there are an incredible number of varying sects under the umbrella of christianity. So your original comment about "doctrine evolving" was spot-on.

    • @fpcoleman57
      @fpcoleman57 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@scottstollery2191
I forgot that I have Richard E. Rubenstein's book "When Jesus Became God: The Struggle to Define Christianity during the Last Days of Rome" which is useful background on the evolution of Christian doctrine particularly during the 4th century.
Another doctrine not found in the Bible is the change of the day of worship from the Sabbath to Sunday. If this interests you the classic work on the subject was published by the the Roman Catholic Church. Well, they do admit that they did it! Samuele Bacchiocchi: "From Sabbath to Sunday". It runs to about 370 A4 pages! Carlyle B. Haynes also produced a shorter version of the research involved. The Church allowed Bacchiocchi full access to their archives even though he wasn't a Catholic!
Whatever Christians, particularly fundamentalists may say and believe -- they are wrong!

    • @scottstollery2191
      @scottstollery2191 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@fpcoleman57 It would be interesting to do a comparison of Rubenstein and Ehrman's books. After Ehrman's book came out, christian writers quickly put out a book trying to refute his scholarship. From reviews I have read on the book, they tried to rebut him using the typical theological arguments, rather than prove him wrong using actual scholarship. There seems to be an incredibly wide gap between what scholars say about the bible, people like Rubenstein and Ehrman, who study it for decades and understand the historical contexts, and the fundamental faithful. I appreciate your suggestions and replies!

At last! A Bible debunker who is entertaining as well as insightful. Having read these passages long ago, he brings it all back to me and validates the same questions that I had going back to adolescence . I wish some people i know who are Biblical fundamentalists would open their minds just once and see the obvious contradictions, unscientific claims, and immorality found in the “Good Book”! But if I tried to point out all these things that disprove this book as the word of any god, the recipient would cover his/her ears and cry “How DARE you mock the Word of God! You are a blasphemer and are going to HELL”. Well, most of us CIVILIZED people are against slavery, genocide, racism, and misogyny. And that makes them MORE MORAL than the “God of the Bible”.

Then you account for some bouts of outright theft from other existing cinematic franchises with just changing the names and a few minor details to disguise it and you get Ben Affleck as both Batman and Daredevil... ummm I mean Abram or Abraham and Shemp or Schecky or shallots - I lost track TBH.

Make your mind up - If it's true, given that it concerns events from hundreds to thousands of years ago, that DOES make it a history book.
Personally, I agree with your first sentiment, that it is NOT a history book, because there is precious little history in it, but a lot of supernatural stories.

Isn't it funny that everytime when those early Genesis Chapters try to lead over form one thing to the next the "now" is a total Non sequitur and has nothing to do with the previous story?
Noah had such a clash too with the same purpose: declaring the people were bad and deserved what they got...

God put fruits about so that Adam and eve may eat. They had digestive systems. What would happen if they didn't eat?
There was a tree of life. If they did, they would presumably gain eternal life as they gained knowledge from the other. Why put the tree there at all if it would only give them what they already have?

To be fair, pastoralist societies measure wealth in terms of flocks and herds - this requires lots of grazing land to maintain. So it made sense for two rich pastoralists to part ways to avoid conflict over grazing land.
But the rest of your criticisms of this chapter are quite valid.

    To Tony Clifford:
    Mr. Clifford,
I copied your text so that I could address several points one by one:
    Interesting
that you say “ despite all conflicts, doubts and questions ...” . That is the
whole point really. You know there are issues, but are prepared to overlook
them anyway. That is what makes no sense, to me at least, and I’m sure to many,
if not most atheists. As for “I doubt I’ll ever embrace atheism”, isn’t that
saying you will never think logically, listen to the evidence, or lack of it,
to make an informed decision, but instead just accept everything on faith,
despite the issues you have already outlined?
    I like to
believe I am the most logical, down-to-earth person I know. Sometimes, I must remind myself to be rational
and logical, because logic can be one’s worst nightmare when it is working
against one. It is so easy to think
emotionally and not logically. This is
something that drives me crazy about people in authority. They think they have a license to not make
sense at times when logic and facts go against them.
    I fully get
that the whole concept of Christianity defies logic: She got pregnant without doing, well,
    you-know-what. Everyone knows who he
purportedly is at his birth, yet any record-keepers “disappear” until he is,
like, 12 and he disappears for a couple of days, and mom and dad find him with
some rabbis. The records stop until he
is 30, he multiplies food, walks on water, raises pals from the dead and
ultimately rises from the dead himself.
And, it is my understanding (though I don’t recall seeing it in the New
Testament) that his mother does not just die; she flies up to Heaven herself,
body and all. Sure, I can see where
people would go, “wait a minute” about all this. I am also aware that there were hundreds of accounts
of Jesus’s life but that early popes and councils picked out the stories which
suited them and the political/social situation at the time. One story says that some kid picked a fight
with Jesus when they were both kids and Jesus used his power to “do something”
to this kid, and it was not pretty.
    Then the
flood - you seem to be making a guess based on what suits your beliefs. I’m
sure you could come up with other possible scenarios, but they all would likely
not have much (any) evidence - isn’t the bible pretty clear there was ONE ark,
that carried ALL animals? Where is there evidence of technology to quickly
build a boat capable of carrying a couple of generations of people, livestock
and food, let alone have enough space to carry some of the nearby wildlife (let
alone the kangaroos and polar bears from far away lands)? Does it seem
reasonable that animal farmers would have a boat prebuilt “just in case god
decides to flood the land and kill everyone”?
    No, I have
heard several atheists say that science has long since proved that the
so-called “Great Flood” could never have happened, because such a disaster
would leave some kind of evidence down on the ocean floors, perhaps, like
fossils and rings on large trees, with each ring indicating one year of the
tree’s life. And Africa looking like it
must have once fit onto America. But,
suppose there was a flood caused by a river overflowing. What else would a farmer do but try to salvage
his animals? Animals are very valuable
to farmers. As I said, what did you have
in that part of the world, then? A lot
of communities far from each other. Not
a lot of reading and writing was done at that time, unless Dad had the $ to
send you to school. So, I’m guessing
that each town had, say, 3 guys who could read and write. This gave them huge power to put spin on
stuff. And you know how things get exaggerated
as things get repeated over and over.
    As for Jesus,
first of all, I can’t help observing that, while atheists argue about him being
God’s son, I have yet to hear an atheist say that he never existed in the first
place. They do not argue that point; it
seems that they dispute his identity, but not his existence. I am supposing that they accept a lot of the
historical records on him as legitimate.
I have a theory about him - maybe he was like the televangelists or
street preachers of today - lots of charm, good looks, easily likeable and
maybe he made quite an impression on people.
I have also pointed out that, for someone who so much supposedly preached
peace, he seems to be the only guy around who turned violent - when he
confronts the money-changers in the temple; he smacks the guys around and
    throws furniture!

    • @TheSufferBrothers2
      @TheSufferBrothers2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Jesus never existed in the first place.
      There you go.
"I am supposing that they accept a lot of the
historical records on him as legitimate. "
Nope, although you *do* raise a very interesting point - most historians agree on two things where Jesus is concerned: (1) that he existed, and (2) that the historical record does little, if anything at all, to support this.
Your theory about Jesus is actually pretty close to the historical consensus - that if he existed, he was most likely a charming person with great oratory skills who made an impression on lots of people.
Personally, as I said, I don't think he existed - I think the character is most likely an amalgam of various preachers at the time, which in the telling and retelling of the stories before being committed to writing, became a unique literary invention.
Could I say categorically that you are wrong and I am right? Absolutely not!
Loved your post, by the way. Well thought out and nicely put!

Look up the 3rd law of thermodynamics. Matter cannot be created nor destroyed. That's a science law guys... So with that being said... How did the first gasses get here to intertwine with eachother to cause the big bang? If matter cannot be created nor destroyed then the only logical answer is is that there is in fact a being far greater and more powerful than our minds could ever comprehend and this being can create whatever it desires. Therefore I call this being God. And why is a He divine? Well He created the universe so what makes Him not divine?

I thought the term “sodomite” is a biblical term homophobes use to justify their hatred towards the lgbt. From the way you’re describing it, Friendly Atheist, that can reflect back at the author of Genesis and its defenders.
