But one of the websites says its the DfT's opinion, so perhaps not something tested in law yet.
@@arlo.guthrie well the super73 can be set to ‘illegal’ from its app. So all super73’s would be illegal in the uk if that was true and you can buy them.
I live in a farming village and haven't worn a helmet in ten years, virtually never in my bike riding life, cities included. Actually, I only wear a helmet paragliding and snowboarding. But to be honest, I believe half of the clumsy human species should probably wear a helmet walking.
25 km/h (15,5 mph) is indeed because of other roadusers. If you're in Holland where all cycle paths are 2 - 4m wide, the problem isn't really there, since you have room to pass others. Nevertheless, crashing into sombody else at close to 50 km/h (30mph) or worse someone else with the same speed coming from the other direction (= speed x2) will lead to horrific injuries (no airbags to potect anybody). It's a structural problem for roads since you're essentially adding a 4th type of road user that kind of need his own space: car, speedy bike needing protection from cars, bikes needing protection from cars and speedy bikes and pedestrians needing protection from all others. The most practical solution will probably be to ban cars from some roads and make them speedy bike roads out of them. It's already difficult enough to get descent bike infrastructure in most places, don't want to know what it means if you need another layer on top of it.
In Canada our bikes come in box with 32 km/hr. but some companies show you easy way to get to more through settings so you won't need to remove limiter or add anything. I have the Bolt X from Rizer that allows you to go into settings to change speed, mine now goes up to 57 km/hr. (35 miles), which we could consider fast since in Canada the law actually only allows 32 km/hr (19.88 miles an hour). For people with ebikes even faster than that 57 km/h my bike would seem slow.
I already used a other trick to make my bike think that it is going slower then it actually is. Does the speed box 2 unlock the mother/make it go faster or would it be no help.
The safety factors of wearing a helmet are actually more complex than *_wearing a helmet = safer_* (in the UK, at least). Studies conducted by academic bodies show that drivers take less care and pass closer to cyclists if they are wearing a helmet. There's a lot more complexity (partly from how drivers react to cyclists, and partly from how cyclists' behaviour changes when wearing a helmet), but in the abstract, a cyclist is _less_ likely to have an accident if they are not wearing a helmet. One often overlooked big factor is that the dangers of cycling without a helmet pale into insignificance when compared to the dangers of not cycling. The health benefits of cycling are so strong, that you should get out there and do it whether you wear a helmet or not.
Yes, in a similar way, the safety factors of having an airbag in your car are more complex than airbag = safer. Some hypothesise that if you replaced the airbag with a six inch dagger pointing directly at the driver's face, accident rates would fall dramatically!
Good on you for resisting the helmet coolaid. Keep it out of GB as long as you can. We didn't in Australia, ended up with a law, and regret it now. It's so much harder to reintroduce the bicycle as a utility option. Only recently they've made getting an exemption easier which many will go for. But it should never have got to that point. Thanks for a great discourse on hacking the speed limiter.
6:18 its because 15.5 mph is equal to 25kmh which is the average restriction in EU. Half a mile an hour is just to make it equal to 25kmh and nothing else!
It's why I gave up motor bikes when they made helmets compulsory ! Cuts your hearing, restricts your vision and if you come of at a hundred miles an hour, a helmets not going to save you ! Got ebike now, no helmet. Only danger is car drivers who have never ridden a motorcycle ! Love Pat.
I had a crash at 80mph. As I went up and over I fell onto my back and my head whipped back and hit the pavement when some force. The helmet saved me from a traumatic brain injury, and you’re talking absolute shite if you think that it won’t do it’s job at least some of the time.

Freedom of choice, expression or any disagreement with “big brother” has a person labeled as “non conformist” or a trouble maker. I’m 70 years of age, rode a motorcycle at 100mph, without a helmet, at 16 years of age, and believe in everyone’s right to choose.
The casual rudeness and coarsening of discourse is worsening. If anyone feels an irresistible compulsion to express their opinions to someone not inviting them, the very least they could do is to offer it civilly and with an emphasis on their doing it out of concern. Do you think this high-handed and boorish behaviour is a type of mass formation psychosis?

Where I live, the police do not know or care about the motor limits. They don't check and most of them don't have an answer when asked about the laws on ebike restrictions.

In most states of Australia, perhaps all, cycle helmets have been compulsory for all bike riders for around 20 years, even if only going to the shops in a country town like where I live as well.
I guess the whole world will ultimately end up going that way, as it continues to become more and more socially unacceptable for anyone to hurt themselves, ever. Still, surprised the Aussies were at the front of the queue.
In the USA class 1 e bike restricted by law at 20mph . Class 2 and 3 restricted by law at 28mph . I have a new bike coming the site says 35mph but the reviews say 45mph no class at all .
You dont need a helmet on a bike path you do down hill at 40 on a bridleway, mine has saved me several times from branches and hitting the ground depends where you go and maybe as a good example to children who can be more adventure's than you.
Heh. I know a person who has fallen of a bike at standstill - luckily was wearing a helmet. Broke the hip bone. So, a helmet isn't straightly correlated with speed or distance - however it certainly helps when come accident.
The hypocrisy is vile. The UK gov claim to be leading the way for e-bikes, but impose a torturous 15.5mph/250w limit, making it the most unattractive investment of the century. This in contrast to USA where 6 states permit 1000w motors! Just 20mph would change the whole game. At present when the limiter kicks in at 15.5mph you DON'T have enough momentum to override the weight drag. I have a throttle which helps at junctions, but unless you have STRIPPED your bike down to make it as light as possible, you will still need a lot of leg muscle. Mental. The reason why most if not all other countries have a higher speed limit of 20mph is not merely because they understand this rationale of practical E-bike usage, but because 15.5mph is DANGEROUS. You hold up angry lorries because you can't accelerate around the bends to safety.
I'm not sure I am happy that those in the UK can now go as fast as we in the US are allowed to go: 25mph. Even though I thought your 15mph limit oddly restrictive, I now have a vague feeling of loss and sadness.
I think that there is a quite reason for limiting the power given at the certain speed, and by no means that would be the battery consumption. And also, from my point of wiew and my point of expirience, i would say that messing with the power won't do you any good, because you still have to pedal like a horse, to get to the speed of 30mph, i think this would make sence if you had an ebike twist or thumb throttle. But still it is a nice that you presented this way of bypassing the factory defaults, and always it is good to have something hacked, it makes life funnier and different. God bless, and wear a helmet 👷

Well I have competed both on Road and MTB races, since I was 13/14, I'm now 28. And when I'm racing or training I wear a helmet but just like you I wouldn't bother if was going on a short ride, maybe I would stick a old fashioned cycling cap, the kind they used to wear. But, four year ago I went with my father for a short run, he was a good cyclist in his day and was still fast, he never wore helmet in all these years. Now the but bit, he was front of me and we were hardly moving, 5 mph, when he hit something, I don't know, maybe a stone. Anyway it was enough put of his bike, I laughed and cycled by him, I looked round and he was still lying there, I thought he was just joking but he wasn't. No he was unconscious, he had struck his head on the kerb. He was in a comatose condition, his brain was swelling so they kept him a medically induced coma, he never really came out of it, he had spells or periods over 14 months where he was almost lucid, he died after 15 months. The question is would you want to risk the heart ache that you would put your family through, that we have went through, just for the sake of not sticking a lid on your head? You seem like a smart guy but I occasionally trained with a group and one guy was notorious for not bothering with a helmet when training. He also came off, fortunately I didn't witness it and I never saw him again until three years had passed. I had heard though the grapevine that the injuries he sustained were serious, anyway one day we were walking through a local park and we saw three people coming towards us, the guy in the middle had a harness that was connected by leads to the other two people. He was basically an imbecile, open mouthed making noises and rolling his head around, after they had passed, one of the guys said that's Derek, I said Derek who, and they said Derek that used to occasionally ride with us. My father had a better result than him, hard to say but it's true.
How awful, and I have nothing but sympathy for your experience. But it does sound unusual, and that's really the point. We can't eliminate the risk of all bad things happening, and I don't think we should try. I don't want to live my life taking precautions against things which statistically are unlikely to happen to me. Or should all airline passengers carry a parachute?
@@arlo.guthrie It just depends on how much of an inconvenience something is. Do you only put on your car safety belt for long drives and not bother for short drives? The helmet is a bit like the seat belt, it should be an automatic response, something you don't even consider. Do you always need to wash your hands after going to the toilet? The list is endless. Anyway '' But it does sound unusual'' cyclists, that is people like me, know that is not that unusual.
@@lisazack6459 I agree. A friend of mine always wore his helmet. One day, riding to work, he jumped a curb, and the front wheel came off his bike. When the fork hit the ground, the bike came to an instant stop. He went over the handlebars and landed on his head. The helmet cracked and he wound up with a scrapes and a concussion with some short term memory loss. He is OK now. Thankfully the helmet did its job.
In fact, I don't find it makes much difference to the range. But then I live in a hilly part of the country, and I spend most of my time either going uphill (when the battery is not working any harder than it would anyway) or downhill, when the battery isn't doing anything at all.
@@arlo.guthrie The law did not consider all aspects of this matter and draft in a naive way. The number of coils rotated in the motor and the thickness of the wire play role in speed and torque. The 250W is not enough consideration in the law. I can still give you 250W but go over 45 miles per hour by putting a gears system inside. otherwise, I can give you 1000W but do not go over 15 M but have a high torque. so the law is written by non-technical people with no enough studying and understanding the matter. Shame in the UK no one produce such motor although it is very easy to make, However, the UK regulation and market is hard, so people stay better off. So, speed is not everything but torque, especially in your situation as you live in a hill area and this way you could not feel the difference in range. Your device is useless. You can do that through the display, or if you have a speed sensor, remove it. This motor has two coils one to create a magnetic force to generate movement. second to collect electricity to charge the battery. so it calls an inductive motor.

@@arlo.guthrie street legal is a formality that most traffic police admire the fact that they would love to have a bike to go to the store or just cruise that doesn't make a bunch of unnecessary noise. You know what I mean.🤓👍
Sir, I like your sense of humor and criticism!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
I don't really do they restrict the top speed of the bikes but they limit the power of the motor to 250 W which is very small.
Can't wait for the speedbox 3.0.

Glad you enjoyed it!
Loving your attitude 😊 don’t let the (B) grind you down.
People born in my era rarely wore helmets riding bikes. We also were taught growing up to ride against traffic so you can see the cars and they can see you. Today People ride with a helmet and keep their head safe but get hit from behind by a car and break the rest of their bones.
Yeah - I think being really hi-viz visible is probably far more important than wearing a helmet (I'd rather not get hit in the first place, than hit with a helmet on!)
Wearing Helmut's is like climate change, just a load of shit, the most falls break wrists and collar bones. I've not heard of many people suffering brain damage from a 20kph fall. But anyhooo.
It's individual choice regarding pushbike helmets until the law says otherwise. Since I stopped wearing one however I have noticed the snarky comments and sometimes outright abuse from let's call them idiots have dropped to almost zero. I know you shouldn't let idiots influence safety issues but I found it more relaxing to get home from work without confronting people. I will however be getting another helmet. Let the fun begin.
In America we get our ebikes that exceed 32mph. Mine came as a class 2 but unlocked to a class 3 and my top speed is 35. Wondering if this device will unlock my top speed?
Most probably if your e bike exceeded 32mph then yes it would probably increase your top speed

You don't need to worry about the private road thing. With a bosch motor you can switch between legal and off road with a press of the walk button. That said it does invalidate your warranty and the bosch motors come with four years.
That's interesting ....and I am not sure if it is true. I've found two websites which say that the Department for Transport says ebikes which have a derestrictor are illegal on public roads (eg www.pedelecs.co.uk/electric-bike-guides/uk-electric-bike-law/). But one of the websites says its the DfT's opinion, so perhaps not something tested in law yet.
@@arlo.guthrie well the super73 can be set to ‘illegal’ from its app. So all super73’s would be illegal in the uk if that was true and you can buy them.

Wow ... What a kind thing to say. Thank you.
You should upgrade brakes and tires too.
I think the 15 mph and an extra 1/2 is because the limit is based on the European system of 25 KM per hour
Doh - of course .... thank you!
I already used a other trick to make my bike think that it is going slower then it actually is. Does the speed box 2 unlock the mother/make it go faster or would it be no help.
I think your cander and wit are brilliant thanks
Thank you very much indeed!
Any thing can do to ebike hub back whell .carrier can make them go faster?
Like the format! Love your style and delivery.
Thank you very much … glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for a great discourse on hacking the speed limiter.
blame the VICs for that, kick a VIC
If you get any Ariel Rider bikes, you can go 33mph with ease. I have the Kepler 52v, its well worth the price, better than most high end e-bikes.
Life is not supposed to be safe. Be happy. Be reasonablly safe. Don't trade you freedom for safety.
The extra 5 in the 15.5mph comes from 25kmph being converted to imperial (and rounded down).
6:18 its because 15.5 mph is equal to 25kmh which is the average restriction in EU. Half a mile an hour is just to make it equal to 25kmh and nothing else!
Yes, as I realised after making the film!

So true about car drivers who have never ridden a motorbike. Bike riding should be a compulsory part of the driving test.

We can't! We're still stuck at 15mph, legally.

Hi, can I use this on swytch conversion kit
Don't think so. Supported drives listed here: www.speedbox-tuning.com. Suggest you email the company: info@speedbox-tuning.com
Then you run out of battery very fast. So, you have limitations anyway through the battery
