The vast majority of Harley haters have never ridden one or owned one. I’m far too old to care what others think, just ride and enjoy.
That's right. I've owned a lot of bikes of different "genres" (my current stable includes an S1000RR and a Super Duke) and my '10 Fat Bob is one I still regret selling because it provided a unique and really pleasant riding experience. Comparing cruisers to sport/naked bikes is like comparing a '69 Coupe de Ville to an '02 Honda S2000...and I find it annoying that virtually all "mainstream" reviewers (unlike Missenden) do pretty much that...with the consequence that a lot of the people who listen to them never even give the bikes a chance.
Harley riders have well earned the reputation...........
I own a xr1200, the suspensions crap, brakes are terrible, motor lacks grunt and fuelling is horrible under 3k, thing shakes bolts loose and gearbox is bad. Will prob sell soon....
Harley Slim, and it's perfect for Back Road country rides. It's just a simple motorcycle without all the rider modes and other unnecessary gadgets. just the bike and the road
I do not own a HD and never will but I've ridden two of them, one well over 100 miles on curvy rural roads. Due (in part), to being hideously overweight, they don't go very fast and don't handle well, start dragging parts at very moderate lean angles, the brakes are mediocre (at best), the reliability is lower than average and the cost of a new HD is laughable. Here in the USA, lots of people ride them and that's fine, but I fail to see anything appealing about them.
Buying a new HD 13 years ago was a dream come true. I continue to enjoy every mile. Too bad about the haters. Maybe they'll actually ride one some day.
I used to fall into the hater group from back in the 70's until into the 2,000's. Many of my friends up here had Harley's and in 2015 I bought my first one, a Dyna Low Rider. I loved it and year later moved up to a Road Glide. I had that one for several years and then in 2020 I changed to a Street Glide. I have since put over 32,000 km on that one. They are incredibly comfortable mile munchers. I also have a Bonneville for an around town and short trip bike.

You are one of only about 5 per cent of Harley riders I've ever seen wearing all the proper gear. What a role model!

Having owned 3 big Harleys since 1999, I agree with you about the attention you get when you're out on them. The comment "Oh what a lovely bike" is par for the course. I remember back in 2001 I parked my Road King Classic in St Albans and 2 old ladies came over to say how much they liked the bike and ended up talking to me about it for 15 minutes. There is not another bike manufacturer in the world who gets the same attention Harley Davidson gets. I just love riding them and listening to that slow revving V-twin engine with almost limitless torque. The gearbox neutral thing is normal on a new Harley. After about 1800 miles the gear change becomes significantly better and it drops into neutral with very little effort. I can't imagine not owning a Harley Davidson motorcycle, other than if I get to a point that I can't handle the weight, but then the new Sportster S which is about to be launched is only 200kgs... 😉

Graham i actually loved reading this, because its so interesting, i live in the states so almost universally the harley is seen as just another bike here, and when people pull up on triumphs those are the guys that get stopped and get asked all the questions (ive owned both brands and i never got stopped on the harley) so its funny to hear that over there, harley is the "exotic" gotta talk to that guy bike. You've got great tastes in wheels. Cheers for this.

Harleys are more common nowadays in the UK than 10-20 years back when there were fewer about. They are seen here as a bit of a status symbol, I guess as a lot of the Celebrities/Movie Stars ride them. I suspect you must get some of this in the USA too. To me they look how a proper motorcycle should look. I like the slow revving low stress engine, the loud exhaust and the size and presents of the bike on the road. I also love the Triumphs. I have had a couple in the past (Daytona 600 & 955, plus a Bonneville). In fact my next bike will probably be a Speedmaster. It rides similar to my Softail Deluxe, but is significantly lighter...
@@grahamtricker4103 I do agree, that when people think of the word motorcycle they are probably thinking about a Harley Davidson in their mind. But I love that they are making an impact over there and it’s grown with time. The sound for me is what quintessentially makes a Harley, so I couldn’t agree more. The fact that they see the size of two wheeled tanks though definitely help haha! Well hey hopefully you’re keeping the Harley and having a triumph as well if that’s an option. The speedmasters are sweet. Bonnie’s will always be my favourite bikes looks wise but as far as cruisers: you nailed it with softails and speed masters. I wish there was a way I could send bikes over. I recently moved from Texas to the Midwest and am just a couple hours outside of Milwaukee, so harleys with low mileage and even lower prices are rampant here. You ever need eyes on the ground. I felt some of his emotion and cried. My dream has always been to have a Harley-Davidson, a Fat Boy. It was my father's dream but he passed away before and because of that I have not been able to fulfill that dream until today. Unemployed, with a family to raise and everything expensive here in Brazil, I'm sure I'll leave without having the pleasure of driving a Harley-Davidson. I was very happy with your emotion, congratulations.
It is dead easy to get my Jawa's neutral indicator to light up, unfortunately, it doesn't necessarily mean it is actually in neutral.

@@TheMissendenFlyer Oh, and when it isn't illuminated, this does not mean it isn't in neutral, there is a neutral between third and fourth gears which doesn't light the idiot light.
Still have my grandfather’s old Softail Springer (FXSTS), and I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with this review. If somebody wants a sport bike, something like a Fat Boy just isn’t it. It’s more like the motorcycle equivalent to a convertible luxury car (like an F type convertible). Reasonably sporty-ish, but mostly a beautiful, fun feel-good machine for soaking up a lovely day. Great review

I fell in love with a 1450 Fat Boy 2 weeks ago .I know chrome won't get you home , but the previous owner had it painted in a beautiful metallic green , and covered it with as much chrome as is possible .I wish I could put a pic of it on here .Its awesome .

Amazing machine....
Such a good video, and clearly not coming from someone who is biased. Even if Harley air cooled v-twin cruisers aren't your "cup of tea," nobody can deny that they are incredibly beautiful. And the sound of a Harley air cooled engine is unlike anything else on the road. I'm not a Harley rider, but I've stood up close to Harley bikes, and they exude a type of high quality beauty that no other bikes seem to have. Seeing them up close, in person, is different than seeing a photo.

Also test ride a Sport Glide, interchangeable in minutes from touring to a town bike straight out the box. Handles better as well.

The rear brake pedal on the big harleys was something to get used to when I got the Electra Glide. All my other bikes have brake levers, nice dainty things that you can manipulate with the balls of your foot. The Harley's is literally a pedal, like in a car. The brake is surprisingly strong once you learn to just pick your foot up off the floorboard and simply step on the pedal like you would in a car.
Thats my dream bike and has been for decades. it just looks so epic:D Getting mine next spring and i cannot wait!

Excellent and honest review, well done and fun to watch. I'm in the process of buying a 2022 Fat Boy right now, the dealer is annoying, he's trying to take me to the cleaners so I've got to battle him tomorrow and I'm not looking forward to it. He'll have to bend or I'm walking away, hope that doesn't happen. Thank you, be safe brother. P.S. I've found finding neutral gets better with time and usage.

I have had a lot of motorcycles but I love my 2020 131" Fat Boy. You would love it even more with a 131" upgrade! Personally, I think the lack of love from other riders should be in your top-10 list of likes though.

Ive been lucky enough to own 62 bikes over the years of most brands, I still have 3 of them. I seem to have a bike on average 1-3 years but I bought my Fatboy new in 2014 and 7 years later shes still with me. Every now and again I think about selling her but one ride always makes me reconsider and I arrive home with a smile.

My all time favourite Harley
I used to go for Sunday rides out on the country roads here with my wife and people would always come a talk to us and ask for pictures. We had just a 883 Superlow, with mini apes and a windshield, but we really went some places Onsite that bike. Test rode the New 2022 Harley Heritage Classic in Red & Black. Amazing bike. The New Low Rider S with 117 just scared me.
Easier way to find neutral is use ur foot to pull the gear in towards the bike aswell as lift it. Works for me.
Also as a Harley rider, I nod at every bike I see. Scooters included!

had it for 2years now, still cant find neutral on the fly and it is VERY practical for everyday use. I've ridden it everyday for 2years now, both on city rides and long 5000km tours and rides superbly

Great video yet again. With reference to the stigma to certain brands, I totally agree, riders are riders, but with the HD reference, I tend to find its the harley riders themselves who tend to lookdown at other riders. Not all, normally ones riding alone.

I own a '22 Fatboy. You are correct about finding neutral. It's far easier to locate if you are rolling, when parked however it's difficult to locate.

Hey out there. I have a 2016 fatboy and it is the king of the road no problems just total enjoyment with almost 11000 miles on it its still a new bike 6 years later
Great vid! I currently own an 18 GSA, 19 Speed Triple RS, 20 KTM 350EXC, and now a 21 Street Glide Special. Only fully realized the HD allure post-ownership. Now can't seem to get any miles on the others much any more. The sound, feel, and looks are simply unmatched.
I guess that’s the true test isn’t it - which bike do you want to ride….
The big downside of belt drive is 'if' it breaks or needs replacing, (it is made the same as a timing belt on a car engine so it doesn't like oil/grease, dirt or objects like a small stone in it), it is a major job. The whole primary side has to come off (primary drive, all the clutch, then an inner cover, then there is a section of the swing arm pivot that needs to be removed, even with all the special tools it is a 4-5 hour job ( it took a friend of mine over 8 hours using improvised tools) and can't be done on the side of the road, and no, you can't put a joiner in, it is one piece. Nice review as usual, keep up the good work.
Quick and easy to replace on a Sportster.

So glad you like the Fatty! Surprised that the forward controls didn't make your "hate" list. For me, that's what makes a Harley Davidson. Exhaust options are among the most kaleidoscopic of all bikes. Not gonna get the true potato sound though...once Harley went EFI, potato-potato said bye-bye!
I had a Harley fifteen years ago and the self canceling indicators were great even then. What I didn't like was a rev limiter that cut in at under 5000 rpm. I also found the shiny bits corroded almost immediately if you didn't remember to wipe everything down after riding.
I invested in a Dynajet Power Vision which allows you to change the rev limiter, adjust low idle, correct decel pop among dozens of other functions. Worth every dime if you plan on keeping your HD.
Any bike 15 years ago would corrode or rust. Many other brands tried to copy HD in the looks and ridestyle. Also bikes with lots of chrome. I haven't owned any cruisers previously or a Harley for that matter, but the bikes I have owned you had to take care of and they also rusted in the hard to reach areas.
My 2019 Harley has no rust even parked outside in the rain.

I have just put 350 miles on my new Lowrider S Stage 1 with V and H Longshot Staggered pipes. I think it solves most all of the stuff you didn’t like about the Fatboy. Sounds great, goes like stink, twin discs up front so front brake is awesome (rear not so much!), but the thing that amazes me most is the handling which is borderline sporty! Great piece of kit and comfy too!

An honest broker approach to the bike Andy. I would try one, but a Harley isn’t on any wish list of mine.
I don’t subscribe to the theory of bikers not nodding to Harley’s… many do…
I've just said IME it's the other way around I nod at Harley riders but they don't nod back... I think it's because they are concentrating so hard on trying to ride a heavy bike with a meager front brake 😉 joking apart they do look good but I've had a couple of test rides and couldn't get on with the brakes, no doubt my lack of riding skill but it didn't feel safe enough for me...
When I took my CBT, I was put at the front of the pack and there was a big bike meet on the IOW and every one of them gave a nod. I felt like the Churchill dog after that 😆
Difficulty finding neutral is almost certainly because the clutch needs adjustment. I had the same problem on my new Sport Glide but a ten minute tweak at the dealers sorted it nicely. Glad you enjoyed the bike!
No! finding neutral is as paint. Click Up to second Gear and Pull it down werry easy and then its in neutral.from first Gear up to neutral is almost imposible.
After the dealer’s adjustment, finding neutral from first or second gear on my bike is now very easy.
Really good review, you'd have one hell of a surprise riding one that had a basic Stage 1 done, pipes , air cleaner & tuner, totally different machine then, the standard pipes etc are so restricted. If you're ever down in Aberystwyth you're more than welcome to take my Fatboy lo Special out for a spin, I'd be so interested to see & hear your opinion. You can do a stage 2 which is a cam all the way up to a stage 4/5 which are bigger barrels pistons & CNC ported heads. They do a 131 cubic inch motor now, which is getting mind boggling figures. So that's why so many new bikes are lacking chrome, HD has bought it all.
Nothing like chrome to make a bike look gaudy and weigh 850 lbs.
I changed from a ktm superduke 1290gt which was a great all round bike to a street glide 3 months ago. Yes it’s slower, heavier, vibrates more but I absolutely love it, in my mid 50s I decided I didn’t need 1301cc 170bhp, so wanted a more relaxed pace to look around, take the wife out and have something more analogue than the ktm, and it does all those things, wish I had got one years ago
Like you I like any bike, I find its the HD riders themselves with the attitude.
Maybe, I tend to give everyone the benefit of the doubt....

Great vid, Andy. I’ve had 2 Fatboys in the garage: a 1998 carbureted and a 2003 100th Anniversary injected model (which I still own). Love both but certainly miss the carb version. As far as dislikes, for me it’s only the dealer network… they’re a bit greedy these days. I never had that feeling with the dealers for Ducati or Yamaha. Thankfully it’s a rare thing I need a HD dealer for anymore… all service done by yours truly (so far) except way back when for their break-in service visits. Can’t imagine how you fit that big old gal in your garage with all of your own bikes! 🏍👍🏍

TMF I hope you practiced the Harley rider “Grimace” I have seen so very much this year when out on the bike around Cotswolds and Wales. I will own a Harley at some point as I love the bikes, the sound, the presence and as you say the character. Don’t think I will ever master the Grimace though. I always nod/wave to other riders but never get a response from a HD rider apart from that damn Grimace 😬
I live in the States and you're absolutely right. It's the only reason I've never wanted a Harley. I absolutely love the sound of Harley bikes. I want to own one someday. But the way Harley riders never wave, and seem to be on a high and mighty pedestal, is always a turn off. I actually had my Hayabusa at a gas station, and a man with a Yamaha R1 came up and talked to me about my bike. But I noticed the man's friends absolutely would not speak to me. Then I noticed they had Harley bikes parked behind them. I tried talking to these 2 Harley riders, but they pretended not to hear me, and just kind of looked away. That was the last time I will ever try to make friends with a Harley rider. The grimace is real.

Bought my first harley this year, and not regretting it one bit. The very first one I tried was the FatBoy ( 2021 model) and I got off it at the end of my demo soaking wet in a torrential downpour but grinning ear to ear. Definitely a bike to put a smile on your face, but I couldn't live with it, well, not as a newbie to the brand. I found the footboards very hard to ride with, but most of all trying to get it out T Junctions and tighter bends was hard work on those ultra fat tyres. Given time no doubt I would overcome these issues but having ridden with others on the same bike, and noticed how much trouble they have with tight turns and roundabouts, I think I made the right choice with the Sport Glide, a bike I instantly felt at home on. Feet forward riding takes a wee bit getting used to but it's just something you get the hang of. I would say though a lot of the nice detail points you picked out on your demo bike are extras and not standards...the grips, mirrors, Coil cover, Belt guard, seat, sissy bar, the foot brake lever ( never noticed the pegs but can't imagine they and the gear lever weren't changed if the brake pedal was changed) are all accessories. There is likely about the thick end of £2 to £2.5Ks worth of extras on that machine. Still nice though. Not mad on the dished wheels though, a few friends of mine who have them say they can be an experience in a cross wind. The stock seat is also apparently brutally uncomfortable for a pillion. I also thought the 114 sounded a bit like the gear driven cam Honda VFR's. But fit a Stage 1 with a better pipe and it's much less like a Sewing machine. Even my SG sounds better stock, than the FB but that still is a little anaemic compared to less restricted Softails. Good video though, cheers.

100% agree about non bikers loving the Harley. After I bought my Road King I had to change to an open faced helmet to make it easier to chat to the lovely little old ladies that wanted to talk to me every time I pulled up in a town centre.
Let me know if you find a marque that means lovely young ladies want to talk to you every time you pull up in a town centre....
Another balanced review thanks Andy! Personally I think the stigma is more to do with the association of Harleys to the American riders, hells angels etc who gave the bikes a bad name. As far as the engineering, design and styling of the bikes goes there certainly is no need for prejudice!!
My 2001 Kawasaki ZRXs (I have had two) had a "Positive neutral finder", which basically means that if the bike is at a standstill, you can't shift from first to second. It just goes up to neutral. It's awesome. You don't even have to think about it, don't have to feather the shifter at all, nothing. Modern Kawasakis since then haven't had the feature and I wonder why.
My Electra Glide from 1994 isn't particularly difficult to find neutral either. It's more that sometimes when you stop it it doesn't want to go to neutral at all. Then it helps to just give it a little bit of revs and slip the clutch a bit and try again.

Howdoo TMF Yeah as a Harley rider myself i know the brakes aren't up to scratch if you come from sport bikes or the like, but 1st day on the Harley the one guy told me to remember to use both brakes and since then it has become habit. Then they work fine. And yes they are big and bulky and there is a stigma but after 6 years on mine i still grin like an idiot when i ride. And i actually use mine every day, i do not own any other mode of transport so mine is for commuting, short breakfast runs and long tours ll rolled into one. Loved the video and i especially love the outtakes at the end.

I've recently purchased a cruiser bruiser,triumph thunderbird 1600,the grin factor,and fun on a summer's day is fantastic,must be similar to the Harley,no its not my only bike. Nice feature TMF.

Another great review of a bike that appeals to me. I've had several Harley's and love the way the bike draws you in to most aspects of ownership - not a fan of skulls and too much bling though :-) My question is, the Oxford jeans, how do you get on with the armour? I want to switch from leather jeans with hard armour to denim type hence the ask.
I get on fine, just in the right spot and quite comfortable….
I’ve bought a 2021 street bob with the same 114 engine. Handlings great but it only has a 150 on the rear. Hopefully you’ll get to review one in the future. As you say, the engine is an absolute torque monster, plenty of usable torque when you need it and low down the Rev range. Fit and finish is top notch, criticisms from me ? Rear brake is weak and the clutch bite point is too far from the grip for average, small hands. Minor niggles 😊, enjoy watching your channel, more Harley’s please 👍
Great review and lovely bike! Not ashamed to say that the HD fat boy is what got me in to biking! When I was a kid and Terminator 2 came out, I just thought that was the coolest thing in the world!! Never had one, never had any HD, I think it’s probably forever too expensive for me!! Maybe, one day…

Biggest gripe I have with not just Harleys, but many chooper riders is that THEY don't greet back when greeted and plenty (bikes) are just obnoxiously loud because "it has to be, it's a chopper".
Great reveiew, TMF. One problem with belt drive according to a long distance traveller friend of mine is that if you get a stone/pebble/rock under the belt, you will have to take off the entire swingarm/rear wheel assmbly, and that is likely a dealer job. It's a rare event, but one I wouldn't like to run into.
Yes I have heard from other comments that they are a pain to change if you do need to....
Totally agree about having one in the shed if I had the room (and the cash!). Any comment from Mrs F on the pillion seat - looks pretty comfy back there..

I find on our 2016 HD Road King standard model, finding neutral is easier when just before stopping.

Not necessarily what you think are the best ten bikes ever, but what you would choose perhaps for sentimental reasons, and which of your current stable would make the cut? I’m not a Harley fan by any means but strangely the late 1970’s H-D XLCR cafe racer is on my list 🇬🇧🏍
Off the top of my head I’d keep my current six and add a Fatboy, Ducati Streetfighter v4s, Kawasaki z900RS and a BMW S1000RR….

Here in the U.S. the stigma is somewhat deserved. I've lived in Sturgis, been on several poker runs from bar to bar, and even just yesterday had a pack of about 100 Harleys pass me while I was bicycling in the Rockies; the size of group that blocks intersections to all traffic, regardless of what color the light is, until all the bikes are through. For some, a Harley isn't just a bike, it's a lifestyle. A violent, made in America, leather jacket in winter lifestyle. Not all, just some.
Yes I can understand that - not something we have over here obviously, you rarely see more than two or three at a time...in fact you rarely see Harleys at all.....

Man you’ve gotta love cleaning and polishing to own something like that, too much like hard work for me!
There are bikes to ride and Bikes to polish.
I've owned one for 12 years. I never use commercial chrome polish products. I simply wipe down with a damp cloth followed by a fluffy drying towel followed by a simple spray-on wipe-off detailer spray. Absolutely effortless to care for, and it still looks like brand new.
As you'd say in Europe " your spot on " about the Harley test rode the same bike at Sturgis and rode it hard...I'm not a Harley guy have ridin quite a few but never owned one ...have an 18 Grand America, 06 Speed triple, 98 Suzuki intruder, 90 FJ1200 82 Gold Wing and a 82 900F SS....and really enjoyed the Fat Boy a little odd getting it on the side of the tire but once I got the hang of it I found myself having to get outside the goal post to keep the floor boards off the ground...lots of fun....great review.....Dan Glendale AZ U.S.A.....

Always rear brake first on these apparently, the self cancelling indicators are ideal for forgetful Americans lol. They were very agricultural in the early days. They’re an expensive bike but you get what you pay for. Well finished. The engines are de tuned monsters apart from the 883. Super machines the fat boy. Belt drives last for years. I have issues getting my new Sport Glide to go into neutral. I commute on my HD 4 days a week and on Fridays, I ride my Street Triple in.
Andy I agree with 100% on finding neutral, I have a 2015 Heritage Softail Deluxe and that neutral can be very illusive at times. I also agree about the stigmatism as well, I wave at all other bikes on the road. But there are a lot of Harley riders here in the states with there so called clubs that like to think they own the road, and of coarse it gives a bad image to all of the other motorcycle riders out there. I do think you should add one to your garage, but buy a used one that someone else has worked out all of the little quirks and spent the money on the exhaust and computer tune. They are heavy but boy do they bring smile to your face!
They certainly do Scott - I get they're not for everyone but I must admit I do enjoy riding them....
I've never understood why so many bikers are quite so disparaging about Harley's and Harley riders. Maybe I wouldn't want one as an everyday bike, but I bet there's not many of us who wouldn't like one of these parked on the drive. Great summary of the bike.

Yes you may be right - this bike was laden with extras....
one of the best things about the bike is you can make it yours with multiple engine upgrades i did mine from 114 to 128 big bore not many bikes have a big after market
