Jayateerth Mevundi is one of the Kirana gharana’s leading vocalists. Born in Hubli, his initial training began at home, informally singing bhajans and other devotional music. He recounts that “there was no musician as such in my family, although they would listen to songs on the radio, identify the ragas and appreciate music in general".
Aged 14 he ventured out to find a guru. He received instruction from Arjunsa Nakod for over a decade, and later trained with Shripati Padigar, a disciple of Bhimsen Joshi. Many hear a resemblance between his voice and Joshi’s, with strong incorporation of ideas from Carnatic music and a rich abhang repertoire. He takes an eclectic approach to classical music, saying that “My learning is plucked from various greats of different gharanas.
“In Kirana gharana, most of the swaras have an innate bhaava [feeling] associated with each one of them. Most of the compositions are soaked in the bhakti [devotional] rasa and are dedicated to the supreme lord. I am a very spiritual person.” (Jayateerth Mevundi)
Bhimpalasi is an afternoon raga, said to evoke sringara [attraction, romantic love]. It uses the notes of Kafi thaat, with an aroha [ascent] of nSgmPnS and an avroh [descent] of SnDPmgRS. Characteristically, Dha and Re only appear in the descending line, and tend to be approached from the notes immediately above. Ma is the vadi [king note]. It is similar in shape to the Western Dorian mode, and the closest Carnatic raga is Abheri.

the tabla player is just solid. what a great choice of tuning, to get that rich sound.
Credit must also be given to all the people in the background, the recording and mix engineers. The mic is the Sennheiser md421, which is suited well in capturing the rich tabla tone. And then the mix engineer balanced and mixed the sound very well. And credit to Darbar for being one of the exceedingly few organizations which focus on high production standards.
Darbar channel has created such a a high standard for sound recording quality for Indian classic music. I find it hard to listen to non-Darbar channels now.
