Emily is an unreliable narrator. We see the show exclusively from her point of view, e.g. she thinks everybody loves her and who doesn't is stupid or mean, or both. She believes she is in a dream world and overlooks reality. Narcissism to a T. If a viewer likes satire, he can thoroughly enjoy this. Emily is not meant to be lovable or someone to identify with, but rather the contrary. 😊
@@heyitsbridge Remember that guy whom she had an affair with and then found out he had a girlfriend? Typical. She never saw it coming because she automatically assumed he was madly in love with her. @@Pomoscorzo which is great...if you're Emily. Anyone else watching her adventures just thinks she's an idiot. That's not the way satire is meant to work - you make an example of someone as a way to show to others how they wrong they are. @@t_albino It's my only explanation for this trainwreck of a tv show. As a satire, it makes perfect sense. If you try to take it seriously, you want to retch. 🙄
Honestly this is the most brilliant idea for making this show excusable. Unfortunately, according to the writer's own mouths, it was not their intention. If they had been as clever as you they might have saved a bit of face by claiming this approach. Unreliably narrator... love it.
around episode 2 or 3 I started wondering why it was that "everybody was mean to Emily" as she kept complaining. And I realised that if Emily were a real person I'd personally hate her. If she's supposed to emobody the American girl, American girls, please, do stay on your side of the ocean, thank you very much. i agree had never thought abt the similarities to black mirror however i was wondering what u thought abt her “american view” ik it may seem ignorant at many times but part of it was her standing up for her feminist views. it shows how morals of different cultures different so just bc we say something is ethically correct or incorrect doesn’t mean another culture views it that way. so do we just let it go and just think it’s ok how certain cultures treat women just bc it’s their culture or she we stand up for what we think is ethically correct. both my come off ignorant but i think that is ppls main problem with the show however i think it’s a problem with no solution i think all shows romanticise the life of the main character bc it makes ppl wanna keep watching. and thought a lot of ppl would love to live in france even shows like stranger things make me want to live in a small town in indiana which is a bad representation. same with gossip girl. it makes everyone want to live the life of wealthy high schoolers in new york but it isn’t realistic. i think ppl hate on things before they think abt how they would make it better being in the writers/directors shoes. there’s definitely symbolism as simple as how american her name is bc it’s showing how other cultures view the american culture and how they critique it. i think the show is wonderfully thought out and i love how it incorporates technology
As a french woman, I do have a problem with the way the feminism is portrayed in emily in Paris. Because in France we are very feminist . There is a lot of militancy, most women are feminist. We had Simone de Beauvoir and so many other figure... but the series act as if a big company could base her marketing on a naked woman....that insane and so unrealistic. That even disrespectful to imply that is normal here. I'm not saying there no sexism. There is, especially in "la mode"...a lot of boomer I guess -_-
the feminism on the show is very american twitter not real life. and we can give it a pass, if it was al fiction, like in stranger things or gossip girl. But we can't be certain about things here because from the lack of anyones point of view except for emily, to the nonsense and the in your face political shit, to everything in between nothing add up. i think that they didn't know what they were doing. these are all the same estereotypes from the 80's,
The problem is that show acts like american feminism is the right one. And other cultures might actually find american feminism very regresive and limiting women. But this option is never shown in the series. And actually this is the bigger problem with american culture. Too often is seems to think that the relations between groups of specific characteristics which are visible in the US (and are effect of the history) are universal worldwide, racial and intersex in particular.
@@bip5395 exactly, everything it's a gender issue, a race issue, etc. And that affect the rest of the wold mainly because it's stupid but also because things doesn't work like that in the rest of the world, and that's how they end up estereotyping a regional culture like here or striping people of their identity i means to make us a race wich we are not (latino here)
The characters, plotlines and outfits are purposefully cartoonish and over the top- it’s a little embarrassing to see audiences criticizing the show for not being true to life. It’s camp. Emily is written as a character ridden with flaws - delusional, simple-minded, basic, that’s what I loved the most about the show’s concept. She does and says cringey things, that’s literally the point, it’s funny.
Yes, but don't you think that if that was in fact the point she wouldn't get out of all trouble so easily? Wouldn't she be shown facing consequences of her actions? After all, she might be as delusional as she wants but there is the rest of the world which should resist somehow
I don't know what you mean by problem, but I found it so ironic that americans making show in Paris, put one black and one Asian character and no Arabs at all (despite so many people from Morocco, Tunisia or Algeria living in France)
Call me pessimistic but why did things always work out for her? Nothing ever went horribly wrong or eventually get worked out. Very unrealistic
true! that was definitely a recurring thing
True! And she definitely spends way more money than she could earn in those clothes
When did Darren Star create realistic stories? I wouldn’t expect that from him considering his other work.

yes!! interesting points- it definitely makes for a pretty light and entertaining satire- whether that was the creators intent or not

If this was a silly show someone made back in the 50s, it'd be forgiven. The fact this was made in 2020 is unbelievable.
