You missed an absolutely spectacular detail about this set and its theming. All human vehicles in Mars Mission are based on an animal- with one or two exceptions like "the reaper"- which I think are meant to be the in-universe nicknames for each vehicle. For this set, you have the Rhino 1, 2, &3. The Rhino 1 is fairly obvious, being a huge beast with a single 'horn' mining drill, but the plane and the bike are much more interesting. The plane is an Oxpecker bird, living symbiotically with the Rhino as in real life. And just like in real life, the Rhino's parasites- the bike- end up in the Oxpecker's stomach.
This was my dream set as a kid along with the drop ship, now that I’m older I’ve been collecting the Mars Mission sets and I’m happy to say I have one of these proudly displayed on my shelf. Absolute banger of a lego set

Early 2000’s LEGO sets had such a better value and presence than sets today. Back then less parts could go a long way giving you large bases and vehicles, nowadays hundreds of parts in a set are used just for fine details and stability that the sets could probably be better off without. Just think of the bases in the Space Police, Power Miners, Mars Mission, Castle, and Aqua Raiders themes and compare them to anything like that nowadays.
What an interesting set! My favorite part is the wide range of motion on the wheels. It makes it so the vehicle can go up rough terrain, which if a kid were to bring it outside, it would be perfect for that. Thanks for showing more old lego sets!
@@CheeseyStudios Although i doubt there's any connection between the 2, the same suspension "layout" is used in set 31107 - Space Rover Explorer released in 2020 and funnily enough the wheels are pretty similar too, even if way smaller
Got this for my birthday the year this came out and it might honestly be my favorite Lego set from my childhood. Most of my sets wouldn't last more than a couple weeks before I'd take them apart to use the pieces for something else but I kept this one assembled for years, only ever modifying some of the features. Would love to own another one, don't think I'd be able to find all the pieces in my collection.
If you do manage to get all the parts back together in one place again, I couldn't recommend putting it back together again enough! It was such a fun build and I have even a greater appreciation for the thing now than I did back then

Correct, haven't gotten anything after Galaxy Squad. I'm not holding my breath but I'd love something like Life on Mars or the 90s Space themes like M-Tron and Ice Planet 2002 where they have less of a combat focus. Even though I really liked Galaxy Squad, Mars Mission, and Space Police 3 I think I'm a little tired of that "conflict in a box" model and I think it would let the sets cut a niche away from Star Wars. Getting close with the City space sets but they're still pretty grounded.

I have so many memories of getting some of these for my birthday and spending my entire summer day building them. Seeing them really does fill my tummy with warm fuzzy feelings. I have a ton of great memories of the original mission to mars sets!
What about 7649 Ultra Drill Walker? That thing was a BEAST, plus the ship that comes out is very complete and having it out doesn't make the main build look awkward

I had this set when I was a kid and now all I can find of it are the little transparent orange pieces for the containers and windshields, as well as the wheels.

This set was by far the one thing I wanted most as a kid. I never got one, and by now it's prohibitively expensive. I don't think I'll ever get my hands on one, but it remains the coolest thing I've ever seen.
I remember when I was young absolutely adoring these sets, hearing they got taken out of production as I got older and actually had the money to get them not just waiting on Christmas or something of the sort hit pretty hard for me as a young adult, thank you for review a set that sits so close to my heart, and fantastic video!
That looks super cool! I didn’t know those wheel prices were so rare. When I was about 6 or 7 I got all of my cousins old Lego and some of those black wheels were in it. I guess I always thought they were common for older space sets but that is cool to know I likely own the parts to build that m tron set. I also know that they were used in at least one other set that you didn’t mention that being a 2017 marvel superheroes set with hulk and red hulk. They came in black and purple in that one. Loving the reviews of older sets!

One of my favorites too - had to get this thing put back together! I had given away all my Bionicle parts some time ago so I was missing some pieces for this, but I finally got around to purchasing them on Bricklink.
Love this video so much. 7699 is my No.1 Mars Mission vehicle along with 7645 Crystal Reaper! But sometimes I feel sorry for A.D.U. As we know, A.D.U can't attack enemies and there is no way to make money without 'Crystal Miner' in Crystalien Conflict(except special ops). Unfortunately I lost several Miners because of my inattention. So I had to keep an eye on my Miner lest Aliens should attack it. I look forward to see another awesome Mars Mission sets!
These wheels are considerably larger actually! The wheels you're thinking of are 54mm compared to the 71mm wheels on this one. I do my research, I promise xD

Really interesting set, love the suspension. I think for me as a kid, MM didn't grab me because there's not many vehicles with interiors and I like me cosy interior spaces. Absolutely sublime colours though.

Started on the mars mission backlog that happened after seeing affordable classic space stuff on bricklink (no regrets) just picked up this and the crystal reaper (I keep calling it claw tank because lego battles) hype to get it in. The new technic mars rover I also noticed is minifig scale and will be added to the mars pile after lego ships it and my reward point rocket ride :))) Sad that the space coin was sold out I have the octan, pirate, and king and space/default are the coolest and always sold out
I had this set as a kid and it's still easily on my favourites. I never broke it down but I did unfortunately lose one of the wings for the flyer so it looks a little lopsided. I think having a lot of the Techic elements exposed makes it feel more like a real vehicle with all the mechanical parts working from the inside.

It's interesting that the side view of the vehicle is just a tad bit like that of a dragonfly, similar to the dropship. Downward tilted head, three pairs of spiny skinny legs, much thinner lengthy rear section, and the flyer sports four identical wings. I don't think it was intentional though since it's clearly named "rhino 1" as seen on the side sticker, or maybe originally it was inspired by a dragonfly and renamed later in development.
The animal references is definitely something I should have looked into a bit more on all these sets, It definitely is a clearer match in some over others!
I'm so jealous of all the people who own the later wave sets of Mars Mission. Mars Mission was my childhood. I do own two of the bigger sets though, like the Hypersonic Dropship and the Crystal Reaper, which I'm still happy I own, but I want to complete the whole theme. It's just they're so expensive due to their age.
I used to really want one of these sets back when i was very young and only to find it in one shop, unfortunately my parents said no due to the price and tight budget

Can you even imagine the fact that this brilliant theme was actually widely disliked by AFOLs at the time of its release? The reason? Simply not being the same as Classic Space 😡
I hate this theme SO MUCH. I still believe it was designed by some new designers, because most of this theme designs are so fragile and not playfriendly. This set is not exception, there is so muuch unused space, the whole vechicle looks like unfinished mess because of those ugly not matching curves and flat surfaces. The small vechicle has no locking functions, so I always was frustrated with it when trying to fly with smaller (only quite decent thing in this set) ship. What I do like... is this theme has GREAT colorsheme and AMAZING pieces.
To be fair, I would say most LEGO sets from this era suffer from similar flaws. Design requirements were much less strict than they are today. As 9-year-old kid when I had this, I can promise I enjoyed it and the entire Mars Mission lineup tremendously
Legos most obnoxius beautiful helicopter to me was the mtron one till you showed me that YOOO those are the mtron tires?, they look so much bigger on the mega core

Agreed. I love the level of detail kits bring today, but they don't make for nearly as fun of toys as these older sets did

Those wheels that were used for the Star Destroyer were also used as wheels on the old version of the Clone Turbo Tank! Great set btw

This video reminded me of possibly my favorite LEGO line, Galaxy Squad. Do you think you'll ever make a video on Galaxy Squad, either in the future or in the far future? I'd really like to see a video on Galaxy Squad made by you.
I'd love to one day, but we'll have to see. I unfortunately have no sets from the theme, so that would be a really expensive video 😭
Please revisit the Atlantis theme in the near future. The first wave is spectacular and no one on youtube does a comprehensive overview of themes and builds like you. (also agents would be cool)

It's interesting that the side view of the vehicle is just a tad bit like that of a dragonfly, similar to the dropship. Downward tilted head, three pairs of spiny skinny legs, much thinner lengthy rear section, and the flyer sports four identical wings. I don't think it was intentional though since it's clearly named "rhino 1" as seen on the side sticker, or maybe originally it was inspired by a dragonfly and renamed later in development.
The animal references is definitely something I should have looked into a bit more on all these sets, It definitely is a clearer match in some over others!
I'm so jealous of all the people who own the later wave sets of Mars Mission. Mars Mission was my childhood. I do own two of the bigger sets though, like the Hypersonic Dropship and the Crystal Reaper, which I'm still happy I own, but I want to complete the whole theme. It's just they're so expensive due to their age.
Yeah... I'm missing the Reaper and Drill Walker. Not sure if I'll ever be able to complete either, but I'd love to one day!

Doesn't 7261 Clone Turbo Tank also have those wheels? Idk if it's a different mold; I never had any of those sets.
Thank you! There's quite a few different sizes of the hard plastic wheels, and the Turbo Tank ones would be the next size down - still pretty big though!

It definitely would be possible as you can power up anything you put your mind too, but it would require a lot of modification

I hate this theme SO MUCH. I still believe it was designed by some new designers, because most of this theme designs are so fragile and not playfriendly.
This set is not exception, there is so muuch unused space, the whole vechicle looks like unfinished mess because of those ugly not matching curves and flat surfaces. The small vechicle has no locking functions, so I always was frustrated with it when trying to fly with smaller (only quite decent thing in this set) ship.
What I do like... is this theme has GREAT colorsheme and AMAZING pieces.
To be fair, I would say most LEGO sets from this era suffer from similar flaws. Design requirements were much less strict than they are today. As 9-year-old kid when I had this, I can promise I enjoyed it and the entire Mars Mission lineup tremendously

Yeah, it's really hard to come by these days sadly. I'm pretty sure it had a pretty limited release compared to the other Mars Mission sets
