So when using the pickup stick behind the reed, do you start in DOWN position to set the threads in holes far out of the way to facilitate picking up ONLY the slotted threads?
Correct. Anytime you are setting your pick-up stick you put your heddle in the down position and then pick up only slot threads. After all your threads are on the pick-up stick, return the heddle to neutral and push the stick to the back of the loom (as a holding spot), and you are ready to weave. I hope that helps answer your question.
As you noticed, this is a collection of tips for using the pick-up stick but not the full instruction for the use of this tool in your weaving. You can apply these principles to any pick-up stick draft or pattern, including the huck lace in the course this is excerpted from. For instruction on how to use the pick-up stick and to see these in action check out Sara's full course learn.longthreadmedia.com/courses/huck-lace-on-the-rigid-heddle-loom. Hope that helps!
I did not know that you need to only use the slotted threads for pickup. That is so VERY important. Thank you.
Agreed, it's such a helpful tip. Thanks for the note!

It would have made more sence if you had shown us the wa to use the tips.
