I saw an interview where he talked about writing this song when he spent 4 days in intense therapy after his last perception tour date was done and he was so bad that they rushed him to help. But in one of those sessions he had to do an exercise where he talks to his younger self. So intense

You know alot about music and It's so interesting to see you pointing out every single rythm and adlib and just telling us about it
The sounds in the background are from his sixth birthday party. At first you can hear them singing Happy birthday. This song was inspired by something he went through in therapy. He had to talk to an empty chair and pretend it was his younger self. He did have a breakdown after he reached the peak. Sold out concerts, top song on the charts and he said it was his lowest point. I heard the whole interview it's on the net. Anyway he knew he had depression and anxiety but didn't realize he had OCD. There's all kinds. I had always thought wow he's so grounded he didn't make himself into a fashion plate still dresses the same. I didn't realize that was part of his OCD. His Therapist challenged him to wear different clothes home, nothing ugly or weird but in the interview he said he was crying by the time he got home. He's convinced himself something terrible will happen if he dresses differently. He actually thinks he could die. He met his wife and she's helping him. He's forgiven his Mom realizing she was dealing with her own issues. Just thought you might want to know. Listen to the interview if you have a chance. He's still seeing his Therapist.

One thing I absolutely love about this song, is you can hear his family sang happy birthday to him in the beginning, and there are people talking to him as a kid throughout the entire song. And this isn't something I noticed until like a week ago, and this made me like this song even more.

What I love about Nate is his choice of words, which he always had in his music, but came through to me in "The Search" Album. One example: Instead of saying, "What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger", Nate phrases it like, "everything that breaks you down can also build your character". That is clever, because I honestly believe that bad experiences and trauma can be lifetime burdens. Take abuse or the loss of one's parent for instance. It doesn't necessarily makes you stronger or even a better person. It surely influences the way you think and act, also your character. Dealing with trauma can be a long process to cope with it and for some people. the relief of that burden never comes. That phrase also indicates that it's okay not to be strong, but feel vulnerable, and that's why NF is so unique.
Probably my favourite song of The Search man...
Especially the ending " 'cus if I'm feeling bad for you, then i have to feel bad for me. And that's something i feel like we dont deserve " this hits me every fucking time!
I listen to NF in a way that almost seems obsessive but ISTG each time I listen to his songs they just get to me all the time.

This song was written about an activity NF did in therapy which was talking to your younger self. After his Perception Tour he was majorly depressed and in the darkest place as he states in -Interlude- on The Search album.

I feel like NF writes specifically for Knox to understand :) I imagine, as the intro to each song begins, Knox forms a bridge to NF's mind, walks across, sits down opposite him, and says 'I'm here, Nate, you can talk to me' and then just listens with all his heart. You do amazing work, Mr. Hill. Kudos.

I believe the whole idea from this song was when he was in an institution and his therapist had asked him like what would you say to your younger self, or like something like that.
Earlier in this song, it might’ve been when you were talking about how the back ground gave like a institution vibe, but you said that “it’s so NF” and honestly I think that it’s really unique. Because you don’t see a bunch of rappers like him these days and it’s amazing how he portrays his real life in songs. Great reaction!❤️

If you listen really close in the very beginning there’s a group of people singing Happy Birthday...very eerily at that...almost distorted
It's funny how in the beginning u said u said that u felt like u were in a mental institution cuz he wrote this when he admitted himself into one, and he wrote this song as a form of therapy.
I am incredibly late to this party, but my God, I appreciate how you can break down these lyrics beyond just the words themselves and find the deeper meaning behind every letter used in these songs. If you listen to the beginning talking about the voices in the back is people singing happy birthday, so wonder if it's his happiest moments possible cause his family was together cause you can kind of her a mans voice and some kids voices which would be his siblings and listening more kind of hear a womens voice so sounds like maybe his family being all together and making it a happy day.. he makes you think that's for sure.. great reaction bro
