    Group travel tip: if you regularly travel with a group or groups (family, SO, friends, whatever), its helpful for everyone to have a color of their own. For instance, my color is green. My spouse's is black. My sons is blue. As much of my camping and travel gear as possible has my color on it. If not possible, a bit of nail polish or colored duct tape works. That way, it's a lot easier to identify whose gear is whose. I started doing that in Girl Scouts 50 years ago. For instance, my travel backpack, daypack, messenger bag, cosmetic case, travel mug (loose tea), microfiber towel, silicone foldable mug and bowl or mess kit, etc, are all green

    Even when traveling solely inside the US, I travel with a UK plug converter for planes. The universal power outlet that many planes have at the seat are often loose and stretched out. A UK plug is big and will stay in those outlets firmly while others fall out.

Carries heavier loads more comfortably because the weight is on my hips, not shoulders. New ones weigh just over 9 ounces, and have a removable back cushion that you can leave at home if you want.

    Everyone needs to have their own travel system and routine that works for them, that's as complicated or simple as they feel comfortable with, so there's obviously not one that works for everyone. But it's really helpful to have one and nice to come across so many useful tips. Of course the hard part is having the discipline to actually come up with and use a system, and I'm still working on that.
    Every trip I take I promise to get it right, and of course don't. The one tip I have is don't put it off till shortly before your trip. You'll have enough on your mind then to likely not have the mental space to do this too. I get trip anxiety before every trip, worried that I'll forget something, pack too much, too little or the wrong things, etc., and I'm just too stressed out to be able to think about anything beyond the absolute essentials. So I have to work on my system well in advance. Someday I'll get it right. I keep telling myself.

    I just happened upon this video again and just remembered that I've been using "bar shampoo" for years without realizing it--bar soap! Yes, I know, it's not necessarily good for your hair compared to real shampoo but I'm not fussy and tend to keep my hair short and unstyled, and in a pinch it does the job. But usually just a small dab of liquid shampoo is what I use. I will look into actual bar shampoo though, thanks!
    And, I'd be lying if I said that I don't need some sort of optical device to read things up-close at this point in my life, but thankfully I don't yet need reading glasses and only have to pull out a loupe or magnifying glass now and then to really really fine or faint print on some products. Although, often the real problem is lack of sufficient light, and a flashlight often does the trick. Never travel without either if I can help it.

      She must have an old one. The ones I've seen now only have one exterior pocket and the only inside pocket is the pocket that the bag packs into. I wish I could get one of the older ones! I would think that having only one water bottle pocket would make the floppy bag floppier with the uneven weight distribution, so why not just go with the lighter overall weight of the S2S if it's going to flop to one side anyway?

    • @NoraDunn
      @NoraDunn  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Pamela,
      The Sea to Summit pack video is from a year ago. I got the Osprey packs to test them out and compare to the Sea to Summit packs.
      Both have pros and cons. Sea to Summit is the lightest and packs down the smallest, but has no internal organization nor outside pockets.
      Osprey Ultralight Stuff Pack has 2 outside pockets (I don't know what you're looking at that just has one), and the pocket that it packs into actually has 2 compartments so there's a bit more organization possibilities than what might appear online. But - it is a bit larger.

    How does that surge protector work with voltage changes around the world? Some places are 110v others 220v. Personally, I now travel with a 20 ft 3 outlet extension cord. I've been in hotels where the only avalable outlet is on the far side of the room from the bed.

    • @NoraDunn
      @NoraDunn  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow - a 20ft extension cord must be massive! As for voltage, I don't bring anything that requires a voltage conversion; most electronics (phones, laptops, etc) are dual voltage so they're not a problem. It's appliances like hairdryers that won't work in countries with different voltages (unless you have a voltage converter, which can be bulky and heavy).

    In 1994 as a tourist I was robbed of cash and credit cards in broad daylight in St. Thomas USVI. I was young and stupid…. But ever since I carry dummy decoys. When travelling in dodgy surroundings, I carried two worthless old credit cards (the prepaid type) in my back pocket that would fool thieves when I give them up. I sometimes wanted to get robbed just to fool them…but nothing! Lucky…or Cheated? As I got older and wiser, I left the cards in the hotel room to stop a thief from looking further. Probably more likely to be robbed when separated from your valuables. Still nothing…

    I purchased the Travel Power Strip. One of the receptacles would spark when a plug was inserted because it wasn't making a good connection. Other receptacle was fine. The receptacles have a ground connector, but there's no ground on the plug. So the ground isn't connected to anything. This isn't safe and this would never get UL certified. It seemed pretty poorly made so I decided to pop off the covers and look inside. There is no surge suppression circuitry. Only circuit is for the USB ports. So the surge suppression claim is an outright lie in the description. I wouldn't be surprised if their claim to have high temperature plastic was false too. Maybe I'll take a lighter to the plastic like they do in the picture and see for myself.

    Just fyi - I just returned from Egypt and it is impossible to take more than 100 ml of water through gate security so no way to take water on the flight. Quite a pain as I like to stay hydrated on all flights. I haven’t run into this issue before anywhere in Europe or the UK or North America so not sure how many other countries do this but Egypt is very strict about it.

    • @NoraDunn
      @NoraDunn  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's pretty normal not to be able to take more than 100 ml of liquids through security. The trick is to refill a reusable water bottle on the other side of security, though in countries where the water isn't potable, you either need to treat the water or just buy bottled water.

    • @ricoman7981

      @@NoraDunn in Cairo’s airport there is no access to water at the gate and the final security check, complete with X-ray scanners and visual bag checks is right at the gate. I thought I could get through with a sealed water bottle purchased right across from the gate but found out the hard way that I was wrong. Bottom line is you cannot take your own water on board in Cairo. 100ml is less than a mouthful for me. This current info from 2 days ago.

    • @ricoman7981

      @@NoraDunn I guess if you want to fill a reusable water bottle with warm tap water in the bathroom I guess that could be a solution as long as you have purification tablets or a Steripen in your carry on bag. Having just been there, not the choice I would make and on the Air Canada flight we were on out of Cairo we did get plenty of water on the flight so not a huge issue. One word of caution though, if you have more than 100 ml in your personal water bottle, there is no where to pour it out at the gate security so they could simply confiscate your bottle and you would lose it. Their county, their rules.

      I was going to post on the comment about surge protection and cruise ships. In countries like Belgium surge protection is still needed (let alone third world countries), but it is a no-no on cruise ships. I was also going to point out that you want USB-C in 2023 more than USB-A. The old standard won’t charge many newer devices and those that you can charge will take forever. Two pass through AC ports is a good thing in case you need to unplug a lamp or equivalent to get power in a hotel room.
