- Neal Auction Company’s September 15 & 16, 2018 Major Fall Estates Auction is highlighted by “Le Luxembourg,” an important oil painting by Marc Chagall that is expected to fetch around 1 million USD. Executed in 1953-a year after Chagall’s marriage to Valentina (Vava) Brodsky- the work, whose unbroken chain of provenance originates in Vava’s estate, is believed to be a tribute to couple’s relationship. The painting combines many of Chagall's most iconic artistic elements: the bold palette, a bride (probably Vava), a horse (definitely Chagall), a bouquet of flowers, and, on the right side, the faint outline of a Chagall “fiddler.” It is a quintessential, classic and powerful painting by the master of early Modernism. Held in private collections since its creation in 1953, “Le Luxembourg” comes to Neal Auction Company from a private Savannah, Georgia, collection, where it has resided since 2005. This previously unpublished work is being offered to the public for the first time in over sixty-five years. The authenticity of “Le Luxembourg” has been confirmed by the Comité Chagall.
