  • This is without a doubt one of my favorite builds!
A client of mine recently commissioned me to design and build an industrial desk for his office--and well, lately I've been obsessed with pictures of old abandoned factories so I tried to work that aesthetic into the design, and this is what I came up with.
Special thanks to my Patrons, as well as Lincoln Electric, and Waterlox for sponsoring my work and making this possible!
    Tools & Products used:
    METAL WORKING:
    Dewalt DW872 Cold Saw - amzn.to/2nH4KdP
Dewalt Flexvolt Angle Grinder - amzn.to/2onIcze

Lincoln Electric 375 Air Plasma Cutter - amzn.to/2rwsx34
    Proto 90 degree die grinder - amzn.to/2vYgQq9
    Arrow welding magnet (4-pack) - amzn.to/2tcj0yQ
    Dremel 4000 - amzn.to/2nFHkp5
    WOODWORKING
    Dewalt 20V circular saw - amzn.to/2ogpm0u
    DEWALT DW734 Planer - amzn.to/2nHeqow
    Dewalt DW682K Plate Joiner - amzn.to/2g4Qddy
    Dewalt 20V XR Brushless Drill - amzn.to/2ncJIZe
    1/4"x20 Brass threaded inserts - amzn.to/2owB6ff
Preppin' Weapon Sanding Block - amzn.to/2uitBwm
    FINISH
Waterlox Tung oil finish - waterlox.com/z...
    Sculpt Nouveau Cleaner & Degreaser - bit.ly/2lIJQd6
    Mineral Spirits - amzn.to/2oN1Kkr
    Rust-Oleum sunrise red enamel - amzn.to/2voc0iH
Minwax Dark Walnut wood stain - amzn.to/2nOdLT3
SC Johnson Paste Wax - amzn.to/2oNdfJd

Iv'e been inspired by abandoned factories as well hailing from Pittsburgh. Love the structural elements and design and colors. I really got into french industrial design of the early 1900's Art Nouveau. Structural decadence.

This is awesome. Craftsmanship at it's best. That said, I think this desk is only suitable for writing or infrequent computer use, not working at the computer for hours. Computer desk must be thin to get straight angle in the arms when typing and a different material where the wrists meet the desk. Anything else and you're bound for the world of pain.

A few months ago when I watched this video for the first time I bookmarked it. I've watched it many times since. Whenever I want to see a particular part of the build I can almost just click directly on the timeline and find it instantly. I search for other industrial furniture and find some really, really good ones out there. However, this project remains my baseline. I've 3D CAD'ed it out and when I go to make my "digital improvements" . . . . it seems like sacrilege.
By my own judgment, my skill level would be lower-intermediate for welding and with woodworking even lower. My artistic ability does not exist. With that said I bought $200 dollars of steel today and I'm going to give this a shot. My heavy plagiarized version of ZH Fabs "Industrial Desk" work of art will actually sit in an industrial setting. It will be my desk in the middle of a warehouse where I do fiberglass, gelcoat, bodywork and spray painting.
I have many questions on this build. By no means not as "you should have done it this way" but because I don't understand the basics. I haven't seen Zach respond to comments on this video in a while so in case you don't have the time this is an open question to everyone.
    - The upper attachment for the legs is to a plate flush with the bottom of the desktop frame. This plate also acts as a gusset to the corners of the desktop frame. The leg itself is also gusseted in two directions by the apron. My question is would it be okay to have the top of the legs go up into the inside corner of the frame to a depth that would clear / support the bottom of the wooden desktop? Then weld the vertical and horizontal parts of the leg to the inside of the frame. Could the upper part of the leg become also the gusset for the corners of the frame?
Again this is not questioning the structural integrity or the logic of the ZH FAB method. I'm just wondering if this is one of those heat distortion black magic voodoo reasons or no, the wood top would be affected by xyz, it's more time and cost efficient . . . I simply don't know. I mean it would never have occurred to me to orient the grain so the expansion - contraction is vertical to minimize issues. That is good stuff and thanks Zach for making it available.
    Cheers!

    • @ZHFabrications
      @ZHFabrications  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you so much Tom.. It does get hard to keep up with the comments, E-mails, etc.
You should be fine running the legs up to the bottom of the table-top. Whatever makes the most sense to you is the way to go!
Let me know how it turns out!
