40k - The only scifi universe where being burned alive by a flamethrower over the course of 30 seconds, is considered to be a humane and good way to die...
This is the part that really get's me - the Marines have to much to lose, as their fanboys keep forgetting all the time. It's the Guard that not only fight 95% of all battles for the Imperium, and it's also the Guard that does so in the most epic way - all the horrors of the galaxy are arrayed against them, and they achieve victory against all of this horror time and time again. Marines doing what they were augmented and armed and armored to do is to be expected, Guardsmen doing it with a 'laser-pointer' and 'wet T-shirt' is always more epic.
Kinda surprised they get overrun so easily. Those massive balls stacked togheter make a high wall. A wall high enough that even titans cant climb over them
oh no, no, no, I mean, burn the planet to the ground, sure, but the Iron Warriors deserve a far more punishing.. .. punishment than death and returning to the dark gods. Put them in a void. Nothing there, no connection to the warp, no means of starvation, no espace. They can not do anything forever except killing themselves, which I guess they will not do. That will drive them mad. Sadly, I can't think of something similiar that exist in WH40k. Except that "uncanon-realm"

I know well enough of the 40k universe, and im not easy to suprise. But hearing a warning that this will be horrific actually has me a bit scared as I know this universe is about as subtle as a thermo nuclear bomb, and Im really considering not watching purely for my sanity.

Gotta love it when a Guardsman has more balls than a Space Marine. My favorite parts of 40k is when these nigh invincible super soldiers are out couraged by some random pleb in ill fitting armor and with a flashlight
They're used to being outmatched and having no hope of survival so they don't give a fuck. The space Marines usually have some chance making them very rarely defensless so it's a new experience for them.
@@logandickerson5628 Marines are also considerably more valuable than guardsmen, and they know it. There are 1.002 million space marines, including Grey Knights and the Custodes. There are billions upon billions of guardsmen. Guardsmen also replenish much, much faster. As a result, space marines should really avoid death when they can. Guardsmen don't have to care, they will be shot if they retreat and they will probably die if they advance so for the sake of their god-emperor might as well *advance*
I've been on a bit of a WH40K Audiobook binge for the last few months, and by far the best ones (IMHO) are the IG focused ones. Ciaphas Cain and Gaunt's Ghosts series are both excellent and allow the flashlight carriers to really... shine? (/facepalm, genuinely that was by accident).
Templar Knight the best part about guardsmen isn’t just that they’re a physical wall against destruction, but also a psychic one. The condensation of courage which the Guard embodies has to provide some sort of bulwark to prevent the forces of chaos from overwhelming them.
It's gone too far in my opinion. There is no point in grimdark if there's nothing left to balance it out. I began reading the Gaunt's Ghost novels but after the return of the 1st large offensive of the regiment they immediately end up in another firefight on a proposed peaceful world. It's only part of the first quarter of the book or so, so I'll keep waiting what happens later on but a book should not rely on fights alone to keep the tension alive.
@Steve Dupuy Karens are suckers for rules and regulation but only when it benefits them, they are entitled and believe all beings must cater to their every will and are prone to violent temper tantrums when they dont get this. So Karens are inquisitors, chaos are more like the meth head shoppers who come in at 11pm just before the shop closes and vomit on the floor you just cleaned.
"The Imperium is not especially capable of keeping track of all things the traitors are up to" - well tbf, the Imperium isn't even capable of keeping track of what their own record keeping department is keeping records of. At this point it wouldn't surprise me if they misplaced Holy Terra for 10,000 years due to a typo.
The only reason why they haven't lost Holy Terra yet is because the Emperor is a beacon in the warp for the Imperium. Otherwise... well clerical error.
And when they found out there would be a massive civil war that'd end with the extermination of all typo-makers and their remains thrown into the sun. Not to mention the *massive losses* and *fracture of whole sectors*
31:30 - 34:15 is the reason why I love 40k. Despite the grim, horror, and cruelty of the universe, moments like these shine through the darkness, that even in such messed up place courage and hope still exist, that sometimes the true wonderful character breaks through all the suffering and shows why the Imperium is still standing, why Guilliman didn't give up on mankind and is still willing to fight for it.
Right? Them and the Colonel fighting to the end for vengeance and the Imperium/Emperor made this more inspiring and heroic than gross/horrific. But then I am a huge Bezerk fan, amongst other things, so maybe body horror just doesn't phase me too much.

Something about the part with the statue really got me. This is what I love about 40K. Even amidst the LITERAL DARKEST WTF OMG craziness of this universe, you get these pure humanist moments, where even the most tragic figures can have faith in humanity. This, I think is what people misunderstand about the series. "Grimdark" doesn't mean "entirely hopeless and pointless". 40K manages to find these tiny glimpses of hope and humor amidst the darkest of dystopian futures.

It goes beyond religion and toward the actual, original purpose of the Imperium and what it was meant to represent: faith in HUMANITY. Nothing you just said is wrong, just completely bereft of context or nuance. Of course there will be cynical, darker elements to everything that happens in a Grimdark science fantasy universe. I'm talking about the sliver of hope behind the cynicism. The fact that even people who have been through the absolute worst, whose minds are completely shattered and whose souls have never known peace, can still have a sliver of faith, and then use that faith to do something that mattered, is quintessentially human. And it wasn't faith in some cold, faceless, alien gods, but in themselves and each other. Those mutants had a better understanding of what the emperor represents than any priest of aristocrat ever could.
Agreed. Love it with the stories. However I've also always loved the fact that fans also kind of overcompensate for the grimdark with humor and just a sense of fun. I find this to be true with Dark Souls, and to a lesser extent, DnD as well, where there's just so much fans do with jokes, humor, memes, and just generally having fun. Its like they make their own light, even in cases where the lore is taking itself seriously.
I oddly enough enjoy that space marine shamelessly and compassionately weeping for his fellow man. It is nice to know that empathy, however minimal in amount, exists in the Imperium.
In Luetins video about Space Marines; he explains SM's as completely compassionate to all humanity in the Imperium. They see themselves as the protectors of the people because that's what the Emperor created them for. They have an almost paternal love for the people they protect, which is why they will defend to the last or go to any lengths for revenge
@@buttpiratesbuttpirate5913 and yet chaos space marines exist? I think that's more of the in universe propaganda part of the lore talking than the truth of the matter. Think about it, they're put through a harrowing process just to have the body of an Astartes, then they go through the training of an Astartes which is hellish in its own right, then they have to go do things that a regular imperium soldier couldn't endure mentally or physically. Especially when it comes to chaos, Astartes can't risk becoming emotionally attached unless they want to drop their guard or lose a bit of their sanity trying to kill people they once cared for. It's actually safer for an Astartes to *care about nothing other than the mission* unless they want to risk becoming a liability. imo, I think their mindset would be closer to a soldier whose been in an active & constant city-turned-battlefield for 20-40 years. It's hard to imagine them being anything outside of emotionally drained or defensively(?) apathetic. Such a lively and expressive show of sympathy would be a rarity. So I still find this to be a rarity, and a nice one at that.

When the Guardsmen and Guardswomen had bigger balls than Space Marines; 18:10 31:55 40:20 44:15 (it takes a little bit) Man the Imperial Guard are some of the most inspiring people in the 41st millennium.
Iron Warriors will always be one of my top 3 Chaos Marine legions, not due to their fanaticism, not due to their brutality, but their pragmatism and ingenuity. They are not frothing at the mouth like Khornates, they are not joyous like the Nurgiltes, they do not seek pleasure like Slaaneshi, and they do not aspire to change like Tzeentchians. They simply seek to kill and dominate. And that apathy towards life can be even more sinister than the others at times,

32:57 the great tragedy described of these poor mutants who through everything remembered the emperor's love brought me nearly to tears, Brave and heroic to the last, they had not failed to become traitor marines, i say that they succeeded above and beyond to remain human.

Just imagine if every failed product from a daemonculaba ends up finding that part of the emperor encoded into the gene seed and ends up joining the Legion of the Damned? The statue got me hard man Barely mindless abominations huddeled together and built a statue of rust and tears, a statue to resembel what keept them sane during what could make me insane just by thinking i or someone i love is going through it, during all of that pain and horror they didnt feel the emperor's love. They were far from any form of love, the sadest part is that they remembered it, they remembered a time when they werent inside a daemoncullaba, they would rather remember any other time besides where they are now.

@JOHNPHILLIP8619 IIRC, it was Graham McNiel. I could be wrong. I remember reading the entire series of books that lead up to the events discussed here. The fellow who wrote the 8e Dark Eldar codex actually had his first draft of the codex nixed, or numerous portions of it, because he'd gone way overboard in the Grimdark and hadn't even noticed until his co-workers read his stuff. They just handed it back to him and told him it needed to be toned way, way down. WAY down. I used to fancy myself an amateur author, though I've never published anything. This can happen *very* easily. You get in a groove, you get lost in it, in the characters and the environment and it consumes so much of your attention that you forget you're writing not just for an audience but a publisher. You've got it all planned out, the character development, the themes, the plot devices, the story arcs, the twist, the beginning the middle and the end and you fall right in only to re-read what you read two weeks ago and wonder if you really are a well adjusted person, or some kind of psycho.

Literally shed a tear when I saw the Emperor's statue, totally caught me off guard. Nowadays bodily horrors are pretty common, so the Daemonculaba itself didn't do too much for me. But I was not ready for the feel...
This is why, even with all the horror the Imperium does. I still play Imperium. This shit just makes me feel better everytime I kill a Heretic Astartes on the battlefeild.

everytime i play this video while im writing my book, i always catch the part when the guardsman finds his kin with her mind broken and sacrifices himself to let the others get away. it's always so heart-breaking but inspiring to know that in the grim darkness of the 40K universe, true beacons of light exist, even in a normal man trapped in Hell. like, essentially a space cop blew himself up while being eaten by demons to let the super-powered soldiers flee to safety. thats so badass and saddening.

Damn, this story is tragic af. Imagine space marines fighting alongside abominations, not of their own faults, who still loved the Emperor of Man. I almost teared up for these poor souls. Unfortunately, this is the 40KWH universe so there's no happy ending. While they got out the planet along with Uriel, the unfleshed got possessed because of their rather weak mental state and went berserk, attacking Imperium guards. They had no choice but to wipe them out as an act of mercy.

"You made us! NOW SUFFER FOR YOUR ARROGANCE!" The Unfleshed are so tragic, so horrifying, yet so weirdly endearing. Beings born of evil, yet evil did not rule them, for they still remembered the touch of the light. I know in the sequel, the Lord of the Unfleshed, before his inevitable death, wept and said to Uriel that the Emperor could never forgive them for the 'bad things' they had done, and Uriel assured him that the Emperor still loved them and always would, before giving the Lord a merciful death. Stories like this one show to me that the whole '40k has no good guys' thing to be completely false. There IS good and evil in the Grim Darkness of the far future, it's just not always easy to tell the difference at first glance.

I can think of worse, Slaanesh for example would completely focus less on the purpose of creating Space Marines and make sure the Daemonculaba felt as much pain as possible while adding in some more holes to penetrate.
I would like to note that this was an idea partly borrowed from Dune, specifically the idea of the mothers mutated and fattened into birthing tanks. Specifically House Tleilaxu's Aoxtl Tanks. It was said no one had ever seen a woman from House Tleilaxu for centuries, and that's because all of them had become Aoxtl Tanks.

They're used to being outmatched and having no hope of survival so they don't give a fuck. The space Marines usually have some chance making them very rarely defensless so it's a new experience for them.

Guardsmen don't have to care, they will be shot if they retreat and they will probably die if they advance so for the sake of their god-emperor might as well *advance*

I've been on a bit of a WH40K Audiobook binge for the last few months, and by far the best ones (IMHO) are the IG focused ones. Ciaphas Cain and Gaunt's Ghosts series are both excellent and allow the flashlight carriers to really... shine? (/facepalm, genuinely that was by accident).
Templar Knight the best part about guardsmen isn’t just that they’re a physical wall against destruction, but also a psychic one. The condensation of courage which the Guard embodies has to provide some sort of bulwark to prevent the forces of chaos from overwhelming them.
You know things are seriously messed up when even the space marine breaks down in tears.

This story is really fleshed out.
It's gone too far in my opinion. There is no point in grimdark if there's nothing left to balance it out. I began reading the Gaunt's Ghost novels but after the return of the 1st large offensive of the regiment they immediately end up in another firefight on a proposed peaceful world. It's only part of the first quarter of the book or so, so I'll keep waiting what happens later on but a book should not rely on fights alone to keep the tension alive.

Something about the part with the statue really got me. This is what I love about 40K. Even amidst the LITERAL DARKEST WTF OMG craziness of this universe, you get these pure humanist moments, where even the most tragic figures can have faith in humanity. This, I think is what people misunderstand about the series. "Grimdark" doesn't mean "entirely hopeless and pointless". 40K manages to find these tiny glimpses of hope and humor amidst the darkest of dystopian futures.
If everything is dark, nothing is. If there are pockets of light, the shadows are bigger.

Nothing you just said is wrong, just completely bereft of context or nuance. Of course there will be cynical, darker elements to everything that happens in a Grimdark science fantasy universe. I'm talking about the sliver of hope behind the cynicism. The fact that even people who have been through the absolute worst, whose minds are completely shattered and whose souls have never known peace, can still have a sliver of faith, and then use that faith to do something that mattered, is quintessentially human. And it wasn't faith in some cold, faceless, alien gods, but in themselves and each other.

Agreed. Love it with the stories. However I've also always loved the fact that fans also kind of overcompensate for the grimdark with humor and just a sense of fun. I find this to be true with Dark Souls, and to a lesser extent, DnD as well, where there's just so much fans do with jokes, humor, memes, and just generally having fun. Its like they make their own light, even in cases where the lore is taking itself seriously.

I oddly enough enjoy that space marine shamelessly and compassionately weeping for his fellow man. It is nice to know that empathy, however minimal in amount, exists in the Imperium.
In Luetins video about Space Marines; he explains SM's as completely compassionate to all humanity in the Imperium. They see themselves as the protectors of the people because that's what the Emperor created them for. They have an almost paternal love for the people they protect, which is why they will defend to the last or go to any lengths for revenge

Think about it, they're put through a harrowing process just to have the body of an Astartes, then they go through the training of an Astartes which is hellish in its own right, then they have to go do things that a regular imperium soldier couldn't endure mentally or physically.
Especially when it comes to chaos, Astartes can't risk becoming emotionally attached unless they want to drop their guard or lose a bit of their sanity trying to kill people they once cared for. It's actually safer for an Astartes to *care about nothing other than the mission* unless they want to risk becoming a liability.
imo, I think their mindset would be closer to a soldier whose been in an active & constant city-turned-battlefield for 20-40 years. It's hard to imagine them being anything outside of emotionally drained or defensively(?) apathetic. Such a lively and expressive show of sympathy would be a rarity.
So I still find this to be a rarity, and a nice one at that.

Barely mindless abominations huddeled together and built a statue of rust and tears, a statue to resembel what keept them sane during what could make me insane just by thinking i or someone i love is going through it, during all of that pain and horror they didnt feel the emperor's love. They were far from any form of love, the sadest part is that they remembered it, they remembered a time when they werent inside a daemoncullaba, they would rather remember any other time besides where they are now.

@JOHNPHILLIP8619 IIRC, it was Graham McNiel. I could be wrong. I remember reading the entire series of books that lead up to the events discussed here.
The fellow who wrote the 8e Dark Eldar codex actually had his first draft of the codex nixed, or numerous portions of it, because he'd gone way overboard in the Grimdark and hadn't even noticed until his co-workers read his stuff. They just handed it back to him and told him it needed to be toned way, way down. WAY down.
I used to fancy myself an amateur author, though I've never published anything. This can happen *very* easily. You get in a groove, you get lost in it, in the characters and the environment and it consumes so much of your attention that you forget you're writing not just for an audience but a publisher. You've got it all planned out, the character development, the themes, the plot devices, the story arcs, the twist, the beginning the middle and the end and you fall right in only to re-read what you read two weeks ago and wonder if you really are a well adjusted person, or some kind of psycho.

everytime i play this video while im writing my book, i always catch the part when the guardsman finds his kin with her mind broken and sacrifices himself to let the others get away. it's always so heart-breaking but inspiring to know that in the grim darkness of the 40K universe, true beacons of light exist, even in a normal man trapped in Hell. like, essentially a space cop blew himself up while being eaten by demons to let the super-powered soldiers flee to safety. thats so badass and saddening.

Damn, this story is tragic af. Imagine space marines fighting alongside abominations, not of their own faults, who still loved the Emperor of Man. I almost teared up for these poor souls. Not done with the video yet. Kinda hoping they are put out of their misery, kinda hoping they meet at least some sort of "kindness".
Unfortunately, this is the 40KWH universe so there's no happy ending. While they got out the planet along with Uriel, the unfleshed got possessed because of their rather weak mental state and went berserk, attacking Imperium guards. They had no choice but to wipe them out as an act of mercy.

The Unfleshed are so tragic, so horrifying, yet so weirdly endearing. Beings born of evil, yet evil did not rule them, for they still remembered the touch of the light. I know in the sequel, the Lord of the Unfleshed, before his inevitable death, wept and said to Uriel that the Emperor could never forgive them for the 'bad things' they had done, and Uriel assured him that the Emperor still loved them and always would, before giving the Lord a merciful death. Stories like this one show to me that the whole '40k has no good guys' thing to be completely false. There IS good and evil in the Grim Darkness of the far future, it's just not always easy to tell the difference at first glance.

I would like to note that this was an idea partly borrowed from Dune, specifically the idea of the mothers mutated and fattened into birthing tanks. Specifically House Tleilaxu's Aoxtl Tanks.
