I lived in Madrid for four years. I have heard this played hundreds of times by numerous fine guitarists. I have never heard it played with such absolute technical precision and perfect artistic delivery. Doesn't everyone realize that her playing is "miraculous"?
I’ve just seen her play this at the National Auditorium in Madrid (3 hours ago) and it was absolutely stunning. An amazing performance. As an encore she took a request from the audience and played it perfectly 😊

The technique isn't that hard but making it sound like music is another thing
"Heavenly" comes to mind. I've heard people say that something was so beautiful that it brought them to tears. Ana's playing does that to me.
I haven't heard yet, anyone playing this piece with more perfection, but also the right expression and dynamics.
Lets remember this is live, all alone, in front of an audience, 1 take, no more chances to do it right. No other instrument that may help you hide a missed note. This are the most difficult types of performance if you ask me. And she nailed it. A real master classical guitarrist.
What makes this better is that Ana is very nice. My daughter was fortunate enough to have a masterclass with her. She was so kind to a 12 year old girl. This is one of my favorite pieces my daughter plays along with Sunburst by Andrew York.

It is very compelling to see people who love music, or any of the Arts, so much. I am a writer by formal training, and moving towards extending my formal training into Visual Art and Music (a return to Music). When I have found pieces that I love, it has sometimes moved me to tears. (Part of that is severe PTSD from my military service, but good Art IS moving even so!)

Memorizing this piece is easy but the techniques, execution and musicality(expressions) involved is where the true artistry comes in and Ana has got it in spades. 🙌🏼👏
Well done, so happy to hear someone like yourself assessing this Maestro. I am not a musician but play some guitar. This is my second favourite piece on guitar and recently viewed Ana playing this . After hearing her play my first favourite piece Concerto de Aranjuez as a solo. I said then that her rendition sounded even better or at least equal to John Williams or Julian Bream. Who I saw performing this with orchestra many years back.

Great critique. And yep, she's a wonder! Makes that Jim Redgate guitar sing like an instrument from heaven. And she plays tremelo using only two fingers(I & M) rather than the usual three, yet is still flows so smoothly. What a performance!
Yes, ima is more usual but I think often suffers rhythmically and dynamically. I did not know of the im technique but wish I had. So many hours of exercise getting that a finger, really all fingers equal. She is the master of pim, for sure.
Ana is one of my favorite classical artists. I am also a big fan of Paola Hermosin, a very versatile guitarist, teacher and music historian. Paola sings nicely along with guitar.
albeniz was a 19th century piano virtuoso and composer who wrote loads for piano, strangely he never wrote for guitar as it wasn’t really a concert instrument in his day, although i play asturias on guitar and piano, most of his piano works sound better on guitar than piano imho, it gives it a much more romantic, spanish feel.
Albeniz was a huge fan of Tárrega and Miguel Llobet and the way in which they arranged his piano pieces. He is said to have remarked to Tárrega playing his Serenata 'This is what I had conceived', as cited by Emilio Pujol in Tárrega, Ensayo Biografico (Lisbon 1960, p. 104).
Albeniz, like Enrique Granados, Joaquin Malats, (and Rodrigo etc later) understood guitar as the idiomatic heart-string of Spanish folk music and thus we have so much evocative music that lends itself perfectly to transcription/arrangement on guitar.

You have a great understanding of technique, your analysis was pretty much spot on. It can take many months learning a piece like this. The amount of work - especially in dynamics, is particularly hard to master. It's so great that we have people like Ana Vidovic and David Russell keeping classical guitar, and amazing composers like Albeniz, alive today.
And not only this piece, but hours of music, where almost every second is different. Mind boggling. Fantastic performance.
My son had the honor to be in a small masterclass with her. She's very soft spoken, warm, patient, and has that aura about her. I have no doubt she will be one of if not the greatest female classical guitarist.

Had the privilege of seeing Ana live in London at the end of October. Amazing concert and she played Asturias as an encore. I had tears in my eyes. Beautiful, just beautiful.

Thanks for this breakdown! One of my favorite performances of all time. I watched a short vid of her conducting a master-class, and one bit of advice she gave a player after he had run through a phrase, was priceless to me, and should be across all styles of guitar playing. And that was to make sure that your fingers are at the fret you are just about to play BEFORE you play it...never rush to a note or it will cut its flavor, and timbre. I sat from here to just over there and watched Segovia play this piece, and although he was well on in years and still had that famous 'expression'...he could not hold a candle to this performance! Thanks again for showcasing this! You GET it!

Going back thru your older videos Fil, this is incredible. As an old flat-picking acoustic 12-string player, I have so much respect and reverence for classical players (like Ana), but also for any acoustic player (Glen Campbell, Roy Clark etc) because with alone, with just an acoustic guitar, no overdrive, faders, whatever... every note has to be perfect. AMAZING talent.

I love Ana Vidovic's version of Asturias , I've heard this piece many times , there are many version on TH-cam. This one is IMHO the best by far, Ana goes from raw power to perfect touch in an instant. There is a video (or article) of her talking about Asturias, it's one of her favorite to play, and it shows.

Ah yes I remember that me and all of my friends learned to play the very first part of this song when it has just 1 drone note but absolutely none of us could ever play it once the one drone note turns into tremolo drone notes and particularly maintaining the same level of expressiveness as you can tell by a pro like here there's *A LOT* of subtlety and control on the bass-melody line and overall the playing it's just incredibly difficult to have that level of control.

Thank you Fil! I have been waiting for a classical peice, and this is one of my favorites. She is astounding! I have not listened to her before. She is every bit as elite as Segovia, Williams, Parkening and so on.
What is impressive with her are her large hands. That fret board is significantly wider than a regular acoustic or electric. If she was playing that, it would really jump out.
What impresses me with this genre are the individual notes and voices. It's not a picking pattern, they are like individual lines. These prices can sound so mechanical or can bring out musical beauty like no other. I think the difference between the two is the later, like her, can make each of those voices be there own having individual attention. Then mix that with the dynamic waves...it's like perfection. All of those voices, from one player on a guitar.

One of my favorite songs. I first heard it by the great Segovia. I was so impressed hearing her doing it a few years ago. A beautiful performance that I saved in my favourites. I have several of her songs on my phone.

Definitely one of my favorite CG performers. I have her Artistry DVD and my favorite suite of pieces on there (by a narrow margin, I must say) is 'La Catedral'. And, of the 3 pieces in that suite, the first is my absolute favorite -- I have watched that one piece played by her about 40 - 50 times. Magnificent!!

Great for Ana, she is fantastic. Reminds me of when three of the Romero family members came to our home in Tacoma, Washington. My stepfather, a general practice physician from WWII also played a really great guitar invited Caledonia, Pepe, and their father Celine Romero to our home in Tacoma. My stepfather delivered one of Pepes children. That's why they agreed to play at our home in Tacoma. My stepfather played an old fashioned Martin guitar. The Romeros, were known as the Royal Family of Spanish guitar. It was an honor to have met Ana.
I'm envious of her talent. I love music so much, and have a soundtrack of my life marked by the music I was listening to chronologically and emotionally. Life would suc! without it. This is the 1st time I've heard/seen her. ty!

REALLY great video Fil. Great performance and a sweet sounding guitar. Witnessing a performance like this in an acoustically superior hall where everyone is holding their breath, not wanting to be that guy who coughed is something everyone here should experience. Unrelated, I once saw David Crosby play in an amphitheatre, not at all comparable to a concert hall, but when he played a quiet song a hush fell over the audience. He made it a point to thank everyone for that, saying it was the ultimate compliment for an artist to have the audience focused on the piece as much as the player. Well done.

Fil, I enjoy how you try to interest guitarists in various kinds of music and the wonderful guitarists, past and present. Paola Hermosin does that in her many well produced You Tube videos.
Did you notice how very very light her touch is with the left hand, also the dramatic rasuego then pick up the picking in such time and speed. I have admired her for ages, nice to see an analysis. I expect she has played this many hundreds of time to get it just right.

He goes on about her musicality which is appropriate. But I can't get over this: All you hear is beautiful music, no finger noise, no mistakes (well, there was one I might have heard) coming from the right hand. That is ridiculously difficult to accomplish no matter the music you are playing, and this is not a simple or short piece by any stretch. Her technique and touch comes from beyond this world.
Ana Vidovic is one of the very best guitar players there is. She hypnotize me.

If Rolling Stone magazine was honest with their greatest guitarist of all time list. Ana Vidovic would have been placed at number one. I've never seen or heard anyone at her skill level ever. Her precision, speed and grace prefectly lines up.

We like and follow a lot of the same guitarists. She is an absolute force of a guitarist. I have lots of albums from lots of classical guitar players - segovia, Williams, Bream, Parkening, etc. - and she is with them all. Don't let anyone tell you women cannot play. I attended a masterclass with Ana Vidovic a few years ago. She’s actually quite petite. I didn’t notice exceptionally large hands or small ones either. There are a few techniques that can help with fretting notes a long way apart such as the position of the thumb on the neck of the guitar - I’m sure you know that anyway, but it’s surprising how far it’s possible to stretch with the correct technique. Yes, there will be exceptions but a lot of practise can help (without overdoing it and causing injury of course!).

Ana Vidovic commands angelic power and precision. Your genuine reactions to artists like Ana, and Willie, and King's X are awesome, and your insights as a musician are really educational. I never picked up on the left leg vs right leg, I've seen that video 100s of times.
I'm kind of a hack player striving to be a novice, in other words I know 30 seconds of 30 tunes. I was so impressed with Ana's version of Asturias I though it would be a great tune to learn. Made it to about 1:10 when she starts stretching for that high E, nope, can't do that, I was out, Adding insult to injury I play a 3/4 Fender classic.

I love playing classical pieces even if not up to half speed just for relaxation and the finger workout on both hands. This is one of those classical bits I can get lost in and end up spending 45 minutes before I realize it. Paganini's Caprice 24 is another.

I was in this room during the concert. A woman coughed right behind me. 150 people in the room thought of killing her.
I have seen Ana several times. Even in larger rooms with 500 seats you normaly can hear a pin drop. It feels like everyone is holding breath. No one claps hands to early, when she plays a set of 3 or 4 pieces. ( Ana loves the european/german audience for this discipline )
Even when you know exactly, what will come, you cant avoid to be surprised of her perfection.
@@KURTKR0EMER Even though I'd love the experience, I'm too fidgety for such an environment, and wouldn't know the correct protocol. My throat would probably dry up from the stress, then my cough would be atrocious after a futile attempt to suppress it. XD

Just play jingle bells for 3 or 4 hours a day, every day, you'll remember it! 😁
This performance reminds me of something a guitarist I used to play Irish Trad music with said. He originally trained as a professional classical guitarist and apparently was pretty good, but he gave it up, not because he didn't have the talent or the drive, but because of the psychological pressure. He said you are playing long complex pieces, with multiple simultaneous notes, all over the neck, with contorted hand positions, etc. But you are completely alone. There are no effects, no band behind you. You are keeping your own time. Every tiny mistake is apparent to even the untrained listener. In just about every other kind of music, you can "fudge" or "cover" a small mistake at least occasionally, but not classical guitar. The anxiety over having to be absolutely perfect in performance just got to him after a while. So I really admire people who can do it, like this young lady.

My sentiments exactly. I used to play Leo Kottke, John Fahey, Bert Jansch, and go bananas with the Robert Johnson song book, but every time I tried to play the classical stuff, I would start getting uncontrollable stage fright.
Another british guitarist I love is Alexandra Whittingham. You should react to her version of this song as well.

Also, Ana started on a full size guitar at age 5. There is a video of her playing somewhere on TH-cam. She says in an interview that she learned on her brother's guitar because her family couldn't afford to buy her a guitar, if I'm not mistaken.
