      @jewdd1989 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@homesteadonomics I bet hay is expensive! Everything has gone up. Well you’re recycling quality siding while also providing a nice, clean and safe space for your animals, can’t ask for more really! I love that you build with materials that last so much longer than wood (and I love woodworking) but I’m sure out there under the heat and then the crazy rains you get, metal is really the ideal option. I’m in a desert in sw KS and the sun damage we get here plus high, constant winds… probably should be using similar materials. Anyways I appreciate utilizing recycled materials and being cost conscious, I still can’t get over using the theatre angle iron for fencing… really smart idea

    If a horse rolls or kicks at the metal on the stall walls please know that they can get seriously injured from the metal. Maybe consider close woven (no climb type) fencing on the interior lower part of the walls or solid wood.
    I had a distant neighbor that had this happen to one of his horses and it was a disaster.
    I want to copy your project for a RV shelter but ( a bit longer ). Like the no welding needed idea since that makes it much easier to DIY. You always have such great projects. Your videos are much appreciated.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have been thinking about that space too. I like that non climb stuff I used for the divider but don’t like the price… so perhaps maybe some pan sheet or something in that space between the purlin rails.

      This structure could work for goats or as storage in a dry climate, but as it stands is extremely dangerous for a horse, donkey, or any equid - especially a feral mustang. One kick will slice through that metal siding like butter, and easily slice a tendon. I also doubt the tubular posts will stand up to a full-sized horse or cow leaning and scratching themselves on it (and they will, guaranteed). 4x4 posts on the corners and 2 inch thick, 4 ft. high kick walls cost little compared to vet bills and the life of your horse.

    Love your work, as always! Horses are pushers. They will lean over fences and push on them, putting their weight into it, too. That alfalfa divide you have now should have another panel of height and its topboard. It is also going to quickly learn how to stick its head under the panel and steal the alfalfa from there, too. I would strongly recommend putting another verticle pole in the center of its length. The temptation for the alfalfa is going to be very high.
    Best of luck to you all with your mustang colt! I do not have any idea of your experience level with horses, but may I suggest you check out the videos at Think Like A Horse channel. The man has owned a wild mustang (maybe several) before, and understands how horses think and why they do what they do.

      Posts - 2x2”x14ga steel tubing(but I’d recommend larger)
      Purlins - 4” “C” purlins
      Wood 2x4’s for the remaining horizontal pieces.
      Corrugated roofing is a 26ga 2.5” deep corrugated type that is coming on parking structures
      Hope that helps!

      Yep! Best barn cat ever too! Winnie her brothers rarely let a day go by without drilling a dead rabbit, mouse or rat on our front door mat😂

      Congratulations Joe. Marley must be thrilled with your latest animal acquisition. You are an excellent teacher of practical geometry and simple building solutions. Wishing you and your family a blessed week filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather and restful evenings after chores. If you do get and train a burro you bill have to build another trailer. Peace brother

    Great build, how would you keep rats and the barn cats from peeing on the bales?

    Hi I was wondering how much it would cost to build a similar hay shelter like yours? We live out in California up in the foothills with winter being an issue as always with the occasional snow and wind being a factor.
