  • The sounds of a Loggerhead Shrike singing and a short discussion of this unique bird. The loggerhead shrike looks like just another songbird until you get a close look at the raptor like big curved beak and the fact that it spends its time perched like a bird of prey waiting for a victim.
Despite its relatively diminutive size, the loggerhead shrike is a bird of prey as well as a songbird. Its nickname: the butcherbird.

Thanks for your uploads, I really appreciate them. Even though I am completely blind at this point in my life, I still enjoy listening to birds and hearing people talk about them. I am curious about this bird and how it carries its prey away? If they catch a large grasshopper or even a small field mouse, do they carry it away in their beak or with their claws?
Thanks again for your videos as I can often visualize the birds you are talking about by using my memories as a once sighted person Who loved bird watching.

They carry away small prey in the beaks and larger prey in their claws. They can catch things as big as mice and other small birds even. Your so welcome, I'm happy you find enjoyment in the videos. BB

So cute!! Our Brown Shrike here in Vietnam doesn't have such a pretty song, more of a piercingly sharp series of crackles. Cheers!

You could have knocked me over with a feather when you began to relate the attributes of this bird! I said, "No, not this innocent little beauty!" Talk about looks being deceiving, 'course we all gotta eat. :)Thank you!

I've seen Loggerhead Shrikes several times, they are not numerous in my area, but there are 3 spots within an hours' or less drive where they are reliably found.
Today I heard this sound repeatedly coming from a tree at one of said locations. I could not lay eyes on the bird and wondered if a car alarm was going off, or maybe a Mockingbird had gotten stuck on a particular phrase. Nope! Since I was at a known home for this bird, I tried listening to a recording, and there was my match! These birds are incredibly fascinating, and despite their violent handling of their prey, they are beautiful in their own way. I feel fortunate to have finally heard this unusual "song" in person. Thanks for recording this video, now I can hear it any time I want to 🙂

I just saw my first one this past week and again this morning. Funny that you should upload this video today. Also, it’s worth mentioning that when I first noticed him I thought he was a Mockingbird and I almost kept on walking out of disinterest (mockingbirds are so common in my area) but upon further inspection, it was a Loggerhead :)

I love these little murderbirds. I have read that they are the only predator for the lubber grasshopper because of their tendency to impale them on spikes.

Many thanks for all your posts, brightens up a cold Scottish Highland day. Love also your commentary, please don't take this the wrong way but your voice is like a stoner guy I met on holiday in the Everglades 1989, went birding one day in his boat, he was so paranoid about the DEA he had to be some distance from the shore to spark up his reefer, lovely kind guy and we saw superb wildlife.

It's a pretty song bird , but I wish it would change its diet to a buggy buffet.

    Gorgeous bird! Thank you.
The scrub jay one you sent breaks my heart as their habitat in FL is being decimated. Where is the protection?
