James E. Livingston was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in June 1962, following graduation from Auburn University. Early assignments included service as a Platoon Commander, Intelligence Officer, and as a Recruit Training Regiment Series Commander.
Promoted to Captain in June 1966, General Livingston served as the Commanding Officer of the Marine detachment aboard the aircraft carrier USS Wasp, before joining the 3rd Marine Division in the Republic of Vietnam in August 1967.
On May 2, 1968, while serving as Commanding Officer, Company E, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, Livingston distinguished himself above and beyond the call of duty in action against enemy forces during the Battle of Dai Do. His actions that day would lead to him being awarded the Medal of Honor by President Richard Nixon on May 14, 1970.
James E. Livingston would serve on active duty in his beloved Marine Corps for over 33 years before retiring as a Major General on September 1, 1995.

Time is a strange thing. My grandfather was a ww1 vet that shook my hand. He shook hands with his grandfather who took part in the seige of Vicksburg. He shook hands with his grandfather that fought in the war for independence. I have been 3 handshakes from a Revolutionary war veteran, amazing! I am 60.

Dude you're so right! Do you remember when there were still ww1 vets walking around!? I remember meeting a couple guys that were vets of both ww1 and ww2 and they looked like the Vietnam vets of today. Hell the Korea vets look like the ww1 vets from when I was a kid.
Same age and feel the same. Crazy to me that when I looked it up the last WW1 vet died like 10 years ago. Soon we will see the last WW2 vet pass away if we are blessed to still be here. 17 years ago when I was hitting the bars these guys looked my Dad. Now they look older than my grandpa. Time is wild
Yep. I'm 72 now. 52 years since I was there. Half a century. My dad was at normandy. My granddad fought in the trenches. They got old and died. My future...I'm old...
And those few had the luxury of aging.
Army veteran here, I’m always saddened by the loss of so many great young men. God bless them all!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Blame HENRY KESSINGER
That's because you guys went to war with a country which didn't even pose a threat to you...yes and you lost the war
why were they there?
Whenever your commander orders "fix bayonets", you know you are in deep sh&t.
Affirmative...,Semper Fi,.,....
Must be about the most horrifying phrase in the English (or any other) language.
Gave to face.. hand to hand😢😢. Remember how young these men are. On both sides. Do it it'll be done to you. Put your young untestedk empathic young heart on the shelf. His commander voice!! Fix Bayonets!! 😢😢❤💔❤️🩹❤️🩹
My grampa told me about running out of ammo and fist fighting, swinging empty rifles and throwing helmets. I don't think they had their bayonets fixed, because I don't think the order was given, but it seems to me that it would be the same thing.
That was brutal but honest warfare. Like a bow hunter vs road hunting. Nowadays it's .ore like a video game. Not all obviously as we still have IED, etc. But you don't really see the whites of their eyes. Look into the eyes of the boy / man that your in hand to hand with and about to kill. That is personal❗💯. I salute your Gpa and all the others who have served. Salute

General Livingston, I was proud to serve under you in 3rd Recruir Training Battalion, PISC in 1981. At the change of command ceremony when you took over they read your Medal Of Honor citation and we were all inspired to serve with the valor you displayed. Years later I moved to Gainesville Texas and saw where you had been honored by the Medal Of Honor City and had visited here for the Medal Of Honor commemoration. I also bought your book. Truly an honor to have been a very small part of your life even though you never knew me. GOD bless and Semper Fi sir.

It's incredible what these men went through. Thank God for all of them
My father was a WWII combat Marine who fought in the Pacific, Okinawa, the Phillipines, etc. He never spoke about it and never seemed to have anything in common with other WWII combat vets who fought in Europe. One day, we went to a party celebrating his best friend's son coming home from fighting in Vietnam. He was a Marine too and had joined the Marines because he admired my dad so much. His father had served in the Navy duringb WWII. I don't remember a lot about the party but I do remember the young Marine and the old Marine (my dad) sitting quietly off to the side talking. Years later when my dad was in the hospital dying from cancer the young Marine came to say goodbye. I gave them privacy and waited out in the hallway. When the young Marine came out he was crying. He told me that my dad was his hero and that on that day they had spoken so long ago, my dad had saved his life and he was forever grateful. My dad had nothing but respect for Vietnam vets. Every day I miss that old Marine who was a Marine until the day he died. Semper Fi dad, Semper Fi till we meet again ❤
I'm sure glad I didn't join the armed forces. A buddy I grew up with went marine. and got to fight in the last 2 middle east wars he got broken physical and mental.

"Awful", or "Total disregard for his men" comes to my mind. Different times I guess.
Not so...They had an objective. and they took it..The United States Marine Corps has earned a fearsome reputation as a unit you do not want to mess with...I am sure a man of his character still grieves over his dead and wounded...And no one second guesses his decisions of that day more than he does....
@@1Maccabee That’s 80% casualties. I believe at Dai Do this Company of Marines found themselves pinned down in a rice paddy under heavy fire and frontal assault was the best of bad options. I admit as a lowly 11b in that conflict I witnessed more than one butter bars fresh from West Point that was too eager for recognition.
That's not good casualty to hi... I wonder how many they lost during the open ground charge

Damn, he added something to his voice saying fixed bayonets look at the highest award in the military around his neck. Salute to a warrior.
I'm sure he took point amongst the 180 Marines.
He sure did and I was starting to look around for an M16 and my bayonet!
😢❤
That's dumb, why would the leader take point? He should be in the back giving orders to runners talking to hq asking for air support
@@KrolKaz I was being facetious, ie. implying that most likely he was doing the opposite, that is he was in the rear with the gear..However, the man and leader that he was, he was likely as far forward posted as wise. Leaders do inspire their soldiers by being at the front and very rarely they have fought with their troops, as in the Pacific in WW2. However, one general who did that was targeted by Japanese soldiers and killed.
I worked with General Livingston during Gulf War, he was a true warrior.
My father served under him in 2/4 echo.
My father a WWII Marine said on Saipan the most horrific thing he was apart of was fixing his bayonet and hand to hand combat. God bless all our marines and as a retired sailor it was always an honor to serve with the Marines. Semper Fi

The Vietnam war was a waste of lives that served no purpose. Vietnam is communist. There was no cascade effect of other countries falling to communism as was predicted. The only benefits of the war were the profits for the military industrial complex.

That use to be the case now they want to make the medal more PC . I read a book of my older brother’s when i was around 15 ,A Two Ocean War , about WWII ,in back appendex there was a section of MOH , Navy Cross , ect. reciepients and their actions for recieving it. The actions these men took were the stuff of true heroes ! Absolutely above and beyond the call of duty . To award this medal for anything less is a diservice to all who have attained this honor in the past .
They have NOT made that medal more PC. I’m fact, the requirements are becoming more and more stringent.
That man is a real warrior God bless him and the men that fought with him don't make a lot of men like that anymore
Stupid trump gave Rush Limbaugh one and neither one of them served in our military
I always looked up to war Veterans and always will. I was denied to serve so seeing someone who did is an honor. Semper Fi, Sir.
When this, now elderly warrior repeated the command “fix bayonets” his voice sounded as commanding now as the day he gave that order for real. Those who have never served their Country as men like he has owe him, and those who have served, a real debt of gratitude. God bless him and Americans honour him, and those who serve their Country.
That is why the U.S. MARINES are so Feared and Respected.
Knuckle dragging morons that get themselves and others killed unnecessarily because they have no combat discipline. There's a reason they have a higher loss rate than the Army across the same battlefields.
