This reminds me of an episode of Star Trek TNG called "Home Soil" where terraformers stumble upon crystals that respond to sunlight by generating electricity, and by using electricity, generated light, and were able to act/react to the environment (and the actions of the terraformers who unwittingly were provoking it). Ultimately a sample they took aboard grew and wired itself into a "micro-brain".
There's some clear differences, as geobacter is a real organism, and it's a bacteria not crystals, but the fact that it can generate electricity, form chains of bacteria, and transmit current around is pretty fascinating. It turns out this discovery was back in '87, which means that, it was technically in the scientific literature before I started school (31 years ago)

It is interesting that an organism can live off of raw electrons but why is biological electricity so amazing? Neurons had to develop from somewhere.
I suppose the fact that they are independent means they could be harnessed separately for some purpose. I would love to see what that purpose becomes.
EDIT: I probably should have watched more than half the video before I commented.
