Hello, MaineNorth Woods Hunter here. I had my soil tested last year and it was 4.5 PH. I put the required lime down and I had some luck with brassica and clover. The problem with the brassica was my plot was about 1/4 of an acre and the animals had eaten everything down to the ground before deer season even started. This year I had my brother make the plot closer to half an acre with his tractor and he box-bladed the soil to level it out a bit. I just took another soil sample. I have not received the results yet. I am sure I will have to put down 400-500 lbs of lime again. I am trying DR. Grant Woods's method this year and planting a polyculture instead of a monoculture. I hope to start building my soil up. Wish me luck here in Maine. Good luck hunting this season.

Thanks for the comments. Yes it is hard to grow annuals in smaller plots if you have a decent deer population, hopefully a 1/2 acre will perform better. Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

I'm in the North East with the same soil. It can be done and if you do it right every year will get better. I have great clover plots and beets n greens too. . Clover has the fastest and best results in this poor environment.

RYE is great for organic matter. Just dont let it grow taller than your equipment can handle, bush hog, push mower, weed whacker, tiller, depending on your equipment you can let it get a bit taller.
