Daikon/ tillage radish are great for loosening up clay soil in addition to bringing nutrients to the upper layer of soil. Framers around here have started using them three years ago which took away one of my secret attractions. Last spring I followed your method of broadcasting buckwheat followed in August with spreading a brassicas blend with annual crimson clover and time layering winter rye and wheat. Not only did I have an excellent plot which had deer in it every day, but the best part is there is zero erosion this spring. Deer and rabbits are chomping down on the cereal grain now. Now waiting for the turkey to move in. Thanks Jeff.

Awesome stuff as usual! I'm on class 6 of the video series and trying to tie it all together for the properties I manage. Often people describe radishes as scavenger crops that gather nutrients, beyond just nitrogen, to store and then release from that husk as they break down...thx again

Great stuff dude question though the following year are you spraying out clover to plant buckwheat then brassicas or seeding into clover with them? Spray it then? Not at all?

When planting two halves are you running them parallel or side by side? Using a linear food plot the top half end to end is one planting and the bottom is the other or is it just one end is something and the other end is something else. I hope that's not too confusing. Really enjoying these and looking forward to more!!!

Thoughts on swapping the beans for turnips in the Fall blend? I found a peas, turnips, oats & wheat blend locally and being in WA, I can't afford to pay $60+ in shipping from John @ NW if my plot is ruined prematurely by trespassing cattle...again. Looking forward to seeing what mulies think of a plot. Thanks!

Great information. Can you start switchgrass in the spring by seeding into the rye or in the late spring by seeding into a buckwheat planting? Of course spraying to kill the rye or buckwheat.

Never thought about using Brassicas to improve the soil. Thanks for that. Have planted them several time in the past 20 years with little to no deer interest. Except right after have a heavy freeze the deer will eat them but that can be Dec or Jan in Arkansas. And my plot screen has done pour the last few years, is it because I have plant it in the same area for 5 years in a row? Have I depleted the soil? Thanks

I just accidentally burnt a 1/2 acre old fallow field and got a bunch of DNR guys out at my back 30. Now that it’s been burnt, I have the northwoods white tails clover blend in a bag brand new... and an earth way 2750....should I spray the seed around and pack it with my three wheeler or what? Buy some lime? Glyphosate? Buckwheat seed?

So many options and I hope the videos help you pick the best food plot planting program. It is is important to get a soil test! Also, it is critical that you spray for weeds. After fire, your plot will explode with weeds and quickly overtake anything you plant. I would control weeds with chemicals at least twice...more likely 3 times and then gear your planting with a cool season annual nurse crop by sometime in August.
If you do not take care of the weeds, there is no use planting a food plot...

Jeff I sprayed simazine while back. When are you gonna spray the 24d and gly for new switchgrass and is that a one time spraying of gly and 24d before it germinates?

If you have a good stand of clover in the spring/summer from the previous years fall plot is it necessary to do the buckwheat prior to the fall rotation for building the soil?

Always after your last frost date to begin with. Also, always work backwards from expected Fall planting date. For example brassicas in PA around 8/1 would mean around 6/10 for buckwheat on good soils...around 6/1 for poor soils.

This is all fine and dandy up north. But east texas food plots get ate up by pigs. You have to be a rich man to afford panels around a whole food plot.

I don’t have to add clover shoot pick up a rock around here and close your eyes throw it and I bet you 1000, it touches clover. LoL actually I killed 1.75 acres of clover to plant my brassicas on one half, and my oats, wheat, rye on the other.

I see were Dr. Grant Woods is copying Jeff Sturgis variety ideas now. When I watched him in the past and the reason I quit watching him as much is it seems like if you didn't plant. Just Eagle Seed Soybean he thought you was dead wrong. I always knew my College Degree ment more to my employer, than it did to my job performance.
