    I have a homemade ice box in my basement that I use that is powerless. I take a couple plastic bottles and mix up some salt water and freeze it. You would be amazed at how cold it gets. I use it all summer like that and in the winter I have a vent that slides open to use the cold air from outside.

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you elaborate on this? From what I understand, you have a cooler/ice box, in your home basement or RV basement? You freeze bottles of salt water (since they have a much lower freezing temp), to use as the refrigerant in your ice box... Do you freeze the bottles in your RV Fridge?

    Good idea. I also use some of the flat gel-freeze packs and keep a couple in the freezer and a couple in the fridge section. I swap the frozen packs with the melted fridge section packs when needed. Seems to lower the fridge section temp about 10 degrees. May help your lower section stay cooler. On warmer days I use a small portable dual zone fridge to keep a few extra gel packs frozen to offset the extra duty. Am going to add your style fan to better circulate the "freeze power" should really help

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll have to make an update video about this fan setup. It has solved a lot of problems, all of my frost is gone, all the levels of the fridge are at the same temperature now, it works much better on hot days. All I needed was some extra volume from the fans. Now, I have to figure out how to power it without a battery, that way I can just forget about it.
      I have done the process of moving freeze packs around, but never found it nearly as effective as air circulation. The little fans were really great, but this bigger fan has changed the game!

    I installed a fan on the refrigerator grill in the outside compartment to blow across the coils. It is wired to 12 V and controlled with a toggle switch I placed inside. It makes all the difference in the world. I leave it run almost all the time. It is especially helpful when the sun beats down on the refrigerator side of the camper.
    Your video is very helpful. Thanks.

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. I have something similar, but it was factory installed. I have 2 thermostatically controlled fans that blow air across the coils when it gets too hot. Luckily, that was built into the fridge. I also try to park with the fridge in the shade side since it makes a huge difference with the sun bearing on it. I’m looking forward to a compressor fridge someday!

      @@Stonyboot I would caution you about being too keen on a 12V fridge, Scott. We've lived on boats a total of 14 years while relying on Danfoss compressor-based 12V fridges. I even added water cooling! They are usually very reliable and the compressors run quietly but they are always draining the battery. Even with your large Lithium bank, you have to run that Honda. Adding a 12V fridge will guarantee it must be run more often. We've found absorption refrigeration to be a huge blessing.

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s an interesting perspective. My goal is to have enough solar in the future to compensate. I do like having the 3-Way function, but I find absorption fridges to be frustrating especially if I need to park off angle.
      My plan is to have enough solar to sustain our common needs (including the fridge) and only need the added power if a generator for high demand loads.
      Time will tell, thank you for your input!

    Great idea. Would be nice if you could wire it right into the fridges existing 12v supply, but I assume you've thought of that and there's no access from the inside. And drilling holes blindly though the fridge wall is just asking for Murphy to slap you in the face! LOL!

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct. I wanted to wire it straight into the fridge power, but, I'd have to drill holes. I could also run wires out the bottom through the gasket, but that will cause an air leak. The battery is a simple solution using stuff I already have. Our battery banks spend most of their time doing nothing, so I decided to put it to work.
      However, I'm still thinking about how to get a wire in there with either 5v or 12v. I have some ideas, but just don't have time the time to focus on it right now.
      I will say, adding this fan has been a HUGE help. Way more than I expected. I hope to do an update video soon once I solve the how to add a wire without drilling or causing a gap in the door gasket.

    @jacktyler7599 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very helpful, Scott...and IMO a sensible way to address the problem. I too have been disappointed with the 'fridge fans' I've found on-line. I just may steal this idea with pride! One surprise: You seem like the kind of guy who would use remote digital temp sensors in your fridge, giving you the ability to monitor fridge performance at a glance while outside conditions vary. Have you looked into them? They usually require 120V AC and convert it internally to 5V DC, so that adds to the complexity (buck converter, I suppose).

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a battery powered wireless thermo in my fridge for a while. However, over time, I realized that we use the fridge so often, that there is no need. We are opening the fridge all the the time, and a quick glance of the thermometer tells us what we need. We seldom drive more than 2 hours without a pee break, at which time, I'll check on the fridge. The only time I have had temperature problems is when it was about 100f and we were driving through the desert with the sun on the fridge side. I just turned off the 12v power and let it run on propane and the problem was solved.
      I don't trust that the fridge will work for much longer before the control board fails again, but... it has been a great fridge and has kept us well fed for 2 years. Knock on wood that the control board lives a long happy life!

    I like this idea and I can see other applications were this would be handy. I’m not sure I understand how the voltage works-wasn’t the battery 12v and the fan required 5v? Won’t too much voltage hurt the fan? Another consideration to mount the battery-get a small mesh bag at the dollar store and use an S hook to hang it from the underside of a shelf. This way if you push something up against it, it will pivot out of the way. This way you can try different locations and it’ll be easy to remove and charge.

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess I didn't explain the basics very well, sorry. The battery is a USB battery pack, so it outputs 5v USB. I bought the fan specifically for its shape/size and USB plug. I have several other 12v fans, but getting 12v power into the fridge requires either drilling or running a cord through the door gasket. We use the battery packs anyway, so we just wanted a bigger version. Now that I know this fan setup works so well, I'll try to figure out a wiring setup.
      I do like the mesh bag idea, good thinking! I placed the battery in a little dead space under the drip tray. It was a perfect fit and hasn't impacted our storage at all. But, that only works on this particular fridge. The mesh bag might be a perfect solution for various other fridge configurations!

So what I was doing is freezing up to 6 water bottles then putting them in the refrigerator to help maintain a lowered temperature. I'm just wondering why you couldn't just run a wire directly to the fans rather than put that charger pack in there? The other thing is I can't believe Norcold hasn't put a fan in there to begin with. One last thing Scott by using the fan do you fine the refrigerator running differently?

    • @Stonyboot
      @Stonyboot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do have plans on running a wire in there. I don’t want to drill holes and I don’t like leaving a wire running through the door seal. The battery worked well and means that the installation is much simpler and leaves no damage.
      The fridge has fans on the back for cooling the fins, but nothing inside.
      And yes, this new fan has made a drastic difference, much more than expected. Our food stays cooler, the fridge is an even temperature from top to bottom and the frost on the fins has been reduced. It’s an over all win win win!
