Restoring the Porsche 911 Door Sills

  • It's been a year since I've found a crack in the paint of the door sills of my 76 Targa. It upset me a lot and I knew I had to fix this quickly to avoid further damage, but I didn't want to shut down the car during summer. Now, as leafs are falling, I've tackled the problem. The video contains the soldering, tinning and the biggest part of the paint job. As always with my projects, I fix everything else that I find on the way.
    I use my classic cars very regularly, e.g. this summer I almost put 10 tkm on the clock. Though I like cars that are completely original, using them a lot means repairing them a lot.

    I wanted the paint job to be limited to the repair area, hence blended into the existing paint. Known as spot repair, this has become a state-of-the-art technique over the past years. In order for this to be a success, it’s essential that you have a full colour match which is very difficult to achieve at home. The paint needs to be thoroughly adjusted to the surrounding which requires more experience than I have and reluctantly I therefore gave the car to the paint shop for the final coats.

      Yea, it’s quite a beauty. And if I may add this: it’s a womaniser beyond imagination. Unfortunately only the car, not me.

    I’m not exactly sure about what I found here.
    As a late 76 model year, this car belongs to the first series that was partly zinc-coated by Porsche. I can still find sound zinc coated panels everywhere I do repairs.
    If you look at the paint layers revealed at 3:20, it appears you can see two paint jobs: the second one which I’m aware of as it took place during my ownership and below that, obviously, the original one. Can it therefore be that the short MAG weld bead at 1:20 is the original one made by the factory? I believe that the factory used hard soldering at this spot earlier on in the sixties and seventies and I believe it’s the better way to deal with it. Maybe they changed this when they started zinc-coating? Looking forward to your comments. Please feel free to answer in German language.
    We eventually used hard soldering to do the repair, as its lower temperature would burn less paint and zinc.

    I must say, you are not a mechanic,you are not a technician, what you are is a craftsman! I don’t get impressed easily however generally everything you touch I’m impressed with. I am very mechanically inclined but I am not 1/10 of what you are I admire your patience and attention to detail augmented by your knowledge of whatever you’re doing keep up the good work by the way I have a 1984 911 TARGA very happy with it but I could never bring it to the level that you do you do .Maybe one day I’ll get to Europe and you your work in person who knows.

    Is it for anti-rust to spray oil into the sill?

      @GreasyFingers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but it’s not really oil, but anti-rust stuff.

    Did the factory use any filler anywhere up to '98?

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course, yes!!!
      How would you build a car without filler?
      This „filler will make the car rust“ thing which is making the rounds in the web these days is the most most stupid and annoying thing since long.

      @@GreasyFingers I ask because I truly don't know. When I watch the old Porsche assembly line videos I recall seeing 'tinning' but not filler. So, I wonder why when doing paint thickness measurements we don't pick up evidence of this. Instead we see the paint alone between~ 3 and 6. Thanks for enlightening me. Yours is the best channel in automotive IMO please do more.

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries, mate & thanks for the feedback. When it comes to tinning, guys with great skill and experience manage to get really close - say 1mm - to the final shape. Remaining unevenness needs to be treated with filler. In my cars I too limit myself to 1mm of filler which means that the resulting layer of paint (filler, base coat & clear) will end up somewhere between 100 and 1200 micrometers which I guess is what you also have at original cars.
      For more details on filler I recommend the Instagram site of schneiderconcepts to you.

      I agree he did do a fantastic job. So much effort was put into doing the repair properly I think it should be complemented by the door color matching. Take it down a notch.

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  ปีที่แล้ว

      I was following the advice of the guy who did the job for me. Back then I didn’t have a proper workshop to do it myself.
      I think the downside is the big amount of heat that goes in, the upside is it’s perfectly protected from corrosion.

    • @glock22357
      @glock22357 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GreasyFingers I would think other similar seams on that car, and on other cars, are successfully welded.
      I have a feeling that's just how it was done in 1950s Germany, and the practice never stopped. A weld would mean that seam would never again be a concern.
      Anyways, nice repair.
