- A rebroadcast of an hour conversation with actor James Garner about his long career in Hollywood and in roles such as "The Americanization of Emily" and "The Great Escape". Garner also discusses his roles on the television series "First Monday" and "Roughing It", the latter of which is based on Mark Twain's writings. He talks about what it means to be Native American in Hollywood and his role as a cultural pioneer.

His book, his more than interesting life story, was so typical of him. Not once did he bullshit anyone, he was under no illusions about himself, and he loved every day of his life appreciating how lucky he was. What a great guy, and a fine example to some of the "stars" of today.R.I.P. Jim.

I think for me and probably others that James Garner should have lived forever, and he will because of film. He was one of those people who never let stardom go to his head. I'm sure if you met him on the street he would say hello! Be at Peace James. Gone but never forgotten..

l met him in 1998, in Toronto, on a film set, in a park, sam smith pk, his autograph will be cherished forever, thy james RIP, it was a thrill to meet him, big hands and matching personality.

Peacock streaming service just launched, and The Rockford Files is on it--all of the episodes. I just started rewatching it. Reminds me what a fine actor James Garner was. Not a false note in that series, or all of his work, really. Murphy's Romance reminded us that he was a leading man, and so handsome, regardless of his age.

At Walmart, they have that one dollar DVD pile. In the jumble I came across one with a selection of old television westerns, and it had two episodes of Maverick on it. My 8-year old son sat down with me and we watched the one where they spoof Gunsmoke. My son has never seen Gunsmoke or any other episode of Maverick. He had to keep picking himself off the floor laughing. I had forgotten how funny, whimsical the show Maverick was. My son actually had me write James Garner a fan letter. In it, I mentioned that in many ways, James Garner, for having created entertainment that could bridge decades and still connect, made him an immortal. Rest in Peace, James Garner. You will not be forgotten.

Been a fan of his since the movie Darby's Rangers! A unique, exceptional, down-to-earth, individual in a profession not known to care for their fellow man.

James Garner was an excellent driver, he did all the driving in The Rockford Files. Stunt drivers were hired but Garner was much better, so he did it all.
In the last month, they have been playing Grand Prix from 1966 with Mr. Gardner at least 6 times and I've seen it every time! WHat a treat that movie is and what a treat to watch his fine acting. The entire cast is excellent. I don't know why that movie just got lost in the shuffle for Oscar night. They deserved much more attention than what they got. What a shame but at least James Gardner gave us his best again. He is sorely missed by his family and his fans.

Aw yes, because all republicans are heartless, stupid knuckle dragger's? I was a fan of Rockford...the character. He was an actor. I enjoyed his work not his politics. That's a major difference between libs and conservatives. Conservatives can admire things about a person they don't politically agree without hating the whole person. Liberals have to demonize the whole person. They get personal much more then the conservatives do. I guess that speaks volumes.
***** Fair enough. I just hate when actors put their politics out there to try to sway people, either way. Back in the day, they kept it to themselves. I find the less I know about an actor, not just politics but who they actually are, the easier it is to believe what I'm seeing on the screen, thus being better entertained.

Garner was asked after Lee Marvin turned it down.
Hey, James considered Steve McQueen a little brother and Charles Bronson a bully. There was an incident where Charles and James almost or actually came to blows. Charles wasn't a very public person. I think Charles was misunderstood and thought to be rougher than he was because of his upbringing. Lee Marvin would pick on Earnest Borgnine while Telly Savalas and Raymond Burr had lots of friends. Just thought I'd add my two cents worth lol.

When William Friedkin did The Hunted, the public stated it was a Rambo knock-off. The irony is, that film stuck closer to the book than any of Stallone's pro-jingoist fantasies.

I just finished JG's book. It is one of the most honest written by a celebrity. He definitely has a temper and use to punch guys for not agreeing with him-according to what he wrote in his book.

Like his shows. I met and hung out with many, many stars. Let's relax. "He should live forever." People, do you know what he did for a living? He played other people. His income comes from play acting and putting makeup on. Sure he sounds like a nice man, but there a millions, no probably a billion, nice men out there. My wife works with a doctor that, now don't quote me because I'm not exactly sure, that in the 70's came up with a way, in the cancer field, to save children's lives. That technique is still saving lives and he is still working. Starting working in the 1960's. Must have saved millions of children and is still saving these kids. By the way he is sort of a raconteur also and as down to earth as anyone.
But you talk non stop about a card carry liberal instead of men that could safe the life of your child, grandchild or great grandchildren.
Just tired of putting actors on top and every one else on the bottom because they are on t.v.
