I Cannot Tell | Songs and Everlasting Joy

  • This hymn, in my experience, is underrated. It has a well known tune, the name of which I will not mention, that causes it to be sung less than it should. The lyrics that W. Y. Fullerton put with the well known tune are simply beautiful. They are expressive and meaningful. They tell the beautiful story of Jesus and His incredible gift for whomever will accept it. It's a concept that humans struggle to comprehend. Like the writer says - "I cannot tell..."
One of the lines that stands out to me is "I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship when at His bidding every storm is stilled." What a thought! How indeed can we worship such a God? Who are we to even attempt such a thing? But this I know, He heals the broken hearted, all flesh shall see His glory, the skies shall sound His praises. Ten thousand thousand human voices sing! What a scene!
May God bless you all as we move through this holiday period. I have not done a series this time relating to the death and resurrection of Jesus, but there is a playlist from previous years, if you want to listen to hymns about that topic. Jesus' Sacrifice for You - • Near the Cross | Songs...
    I Cannot Tell
    Verse 1
I cannot tell why He whom angels worship
Should set His love upon the souls of men,
Or why as Shepherd He should seek the wanderers,
To bring them back, they know not
    how nor when.
But this I know, that He was born of Mary
When Bethlehem’s manger was His only home,
    And that He lived at Nazareth and laboured;
And so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, has come.
    Verse 2
I cannot tell how silently He suffered
As with His peace He graced this place of tears,
Nor how His heart upon the cross was broken,
The crown of pain to three and thirty years.
But this I know He heals the broken hearted
And stays our sin and calms our lurking fear,
    And lifts the burden from the heavy laden;
For still the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is here.
    Verse 3
I cannot tell how He will win the nations,
How He will claim His earthly heritage,
How satisfy the needs and aspirations
Of east and west, of sinner and of sage.
But this I know, all flesh shall see His glory,
And He shall reap the harvest He has sown,
And some glad day His sun will shine in splendour
When He the Saviour, Saviour, of the world, is known.
    Verse 4
I cannot tell how all lands shall worship,
When at His biding every storm is stilled,
Or who can say how great the jubilation
When all our hearts with love for Him are filled.
But this I know the skies shall sound His praises,
Ten thousand thousand human voices sing,
And earth to heaven, and heaven to earth will answer,
At last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!

Oh, my dear friend, what a beautiful song that goes so well with your God-given beautiful voice!!! I know the tune of course, but never these lyrics. What a King we have! Today our church had a self guided, reflective walk of 12 stations of Jesus' sacrifice and how much He loves and forgives us. I certainly don't deserve Him. But oh, how good He is! And I look to do the day as the song describes when we'll see Him in His glory and He will reign!!! God bless you!

No we do not deserve Him! If we did, we wouldn’t need saving! Isn’t it amazing how He saves us even as we don’t deserve it!

As a Dane, I actually have heard this old hymn before, but am not invested in, what that otherwise beautiful tune is used for at all. This hymn is however a million times more meaningful to me, than Oh Danny Boy, which as a matter of fact is Gibberish: Imagine, immigrants from a once great Christian nation, such as the Irish, sing that song over this wonderful hymn on the same tune! It is just another tell on the state of the world, that we live in. Your version is however by far the most beautiful, that I have ever heard and I also love your wonderful drone videos of God's beautiful creation: We are commanded not to worship the creation, but the Creator, but we also are told to know Him through His creation! The creation is all the proof, that we really need, that there is a Creator too.

Yes I do not like the lyrics to the other version at all! Just awful! But these are beautiful and uplifting! And suit the lovely tune perfectly. God bless!

Thankyou for the blessing of this hymn. I appreciate that you avoid the glory for yourself. You have a God-given gift, and it's lovely to hear it lifted in praise of the One Who gave it!

Praise God you enjoy it. The reason I am anonymous is because I do struggle with putting the glory where it is due and it is something the devil tempts me with often. I pray often that God will put my mind in the right place. Any music is God given and we must remember that and sing to His glory! May God be with you this week.

Thank you dear sister for this most beautiful rendering of what is to me the most beautiful piece of music, but then I’m biased!
What wonderful gifts that God has given to those who compose such hymns and to those who use those gifts to share them with others.
    Every Blessing Sister
