- The remake (Family Guy S5E9) to the left and the original version from the movie Anchors Aweigh (1945) to the right. The song is The Worry Song.
One of the most brilliant moments of Family Guy and Gene Kelly.
RIP Gene Kelly. He would be 106 years old, if he was still living. 1912-1996.
He'll still be immortal in our hearts. :-)
84 he lived a long life at least

"he would be alive if he wasnt already dead"
Dam fucker went through ww1 ww2 and Vietnam
Well he was a baby during the first but shit
That badass moment when most actors have to pour their soul out for an Oscar nomination, and Gene Kelly gets one by dancing with a Hanna-Barbera character.
MGM character.
He should have won, too.
It was a whole dance recital that he had to do in one go. With exaggerated movements to help the animation studio get precise bits. It's very endearing to see how animation was so fun.
Check out the rest of the movie. He is great.
Sadly talent doesn’t get you media coverage anymore. All you gotta do is make a few idiot teenagers laugh and you’re relevant *cough* Island Boys *cough* *cough*
Okay. You can have a helicopter.
@@frankz3595 yea
The comedic timing of that line is why I stay on this earth 😂😂

@@dustin1271 Is it a song by Abba? XD

the fact that they were able to do animation with live action in the 40s is amazing
They did it since the 1920s

What a lot of people don't notice is that in the version with Stewie Jerry's reflection can still be seen on the floor.
I just noticed that wow
they actually altered the color of the reflection so it comes off redder (to match Stewie's pants)
I saw it
Holy!!!
It's like Jerry is Stewie's shadow
Tracing or not, could you imagine how long it must have taken the animators to replicate, frame by frame, every individual motion from the original? Kudos to them.
They must have had to put in a bunch of Conway Twitty to make up for this.
Are you really that dumb? 🤦♂️
They would have clearly used Computer imaging to replicate the original, literally just a touch of a button, you really think they would have to trace In This day and age? 🤡
they had jerry as a reference so maybe it wasn’t as hard as we think 😲
@@iluvbooty still would’ve taken tons of time to do. Every frame is (probably) hand-animated
probably not nearly as long or as difficult as the original, which they probably had to do entirely by hand with no software assistance lol
I crossed my eyes so Jerry and Stewie overlapped. It was perfect. It's amazing how both videos are synced so perfectly.
I tried that and wow! You’re right!
Gene Kelly is one
I tried it but instead i got 3 Gene Kellys, 2 Stewies and one Jerry.
Lol I sat here doing it for a minute straight and my eyes are feel werid but worth it.
I was able to do it for about a minute before it hurt. But it was interesting seeing how my eyes worked. I would see the crown on stewie’s head, and sometimes Jerry’s head with stewie head sides. Also Jerry with stewie’s body and vice versa.
The sequence was laid out and timed, originally solely to Gene's dancing. 3,360 distinct photostats (registration) were given to Ray Patterson + Ed Barge, who spent over six months animating these two minutes, adhering to the layout, perspective, camera moves. Then MGM's cost-indifferent ink and painters would airbrush turning edges on Jerry and reflections on the palace floor, to not look stark. Combined after with mattes.
Note: Only do this if you have the budget and the genius of 1940s MGM.^^
And all Seth Macfarlane did was have his animators trace most of the frames!
@@yosefdemby8792 the difference between true discovery and shiny new "high tech" that only got where it was bc of over a hundred years of research/prior work that gets pushed under the rug
I actually do have the budget and genius of 1940s MGM😊
@@dolphin8397 then what are ya waiting for??
Haha, Stewie still has Jerry's shadow.
he has not!
***** I totally noticed that.
Yeah I noticed that during the episode, I couldn't remember who was originally in place of stewie though, I thought it was a real life young girl, and I was wondering how they erased her so well. Instead all they had to do was put him over making it a lot easier.
+gilson mozart Switch shadow for reflection and it makes more sense
jnandreas I was wondering about that
Reportedly, during the making of the original sequence, they were going to use Mickey Mouse, and Walt Disney supposedly even agreed, but Roy Disney said no. Walt Disney Studios was in debt after World War II, and Roy said they had no business making cartoons for other people.
I can see why, considering all the struggles they went through before Mickey.
If I could make a Mickey sequence
The irony is now that Fox is a child company of Disney, Disney own the rights to Family Guy and Stewie is now technically a Disney character. So in the end, Gene technically ended up dancing with a Disney character, even if it wouldn't be till long after he was dead
But here's where things get interesting. Feeling bad about his brother Roy having the final say and upon seeing the finished product, Walt decided to make things up by hiring the song's composer, Sammy Fain, to compose music for songs in Alice In Wonderland and Peter Pan, where production of those 2 films officially began both after the war and Anchors Aweigh's release. Fain would go on to compose 2 more songs for the company with "Once Upon A Dream" from Sleeping Beauty and "Someone's Waiting For You" from The Rescuers.
Dang. Well, honestly, I'm kind of glad he said no. Cause Jerry got to. XD
I think there's a reddish tint to Family Guy's version because back then, they used a kind of film that didn't capture the true colors of the sets and such, so the Family Guy colorist recolored the scene as it would have naturally appeared. That, or they did it to accommodate Stewie.
Caroline Smith I think it's a little of both. Obviously the look of the original dates itself, which is perfectly fine, but Stewie would stick out like a sore thumb.
Caroline Smith it was to hide Jerry’s shadow
@Jake Phe meant trying to make it less visible
@Jake P k
@Jake P ✓ It's never to late to answer a question xD
There's never been a dancer of such greatness since Gene Kelly!
You'll never see dancing like this again anymore. Most dancing now they look like they're having seizures.
And Fred Astaire. :03
There's literally hundreds of great dancers from the 20s-60s

Gene Kelly is just incredible, I just love how he's dancing with Stewie and Jerry, its just incredible, he's definitely one of the best dancers Ive ever seen.
Like i know the animation is cool and all. But we really gotta appreciate the fact a man did that much choreographed dancing for a couple minutes straight, with an invisible partner, where it's meant to be a duet, alone in a room... like gah damn what a legend
How was he alone
You have to think of the career-span of 1 take dance numbers this man and many others did. It's jaw dropping.
I love how Seth Macfarlene incorporates a lot of content or references from back in the day. Being born in the early 2000's, even things from the 90's were still there, I don't really remember EVERYTHINF, but watching family guy, I was introduced to many songs, movies, tv shows, etc 😂😂 I absolutely love this dance routine!
Seth was born in 1973
Love how much he references musicals. Dude seems to have a clear appreciation and love for this.
@@dee8722 iirc he outright had a role in Sing where he sang a cover of a Frank Sinatra song. Seth's got some pipes, iirc.
@@TheBonkleFox hes a really good singer, definitely could have made a career out of it if family guy flopped
Family Guy introduced me to a lot of films and shows I would have never heard of on my own
Such an impressive work considering that it was made in 1945. I also like how characters in old cartoons look more lively and detailed in their movements with various facial expressions.
0:05-0:11 and 1:45-1:47 It's like Jerry and Stewie are both singing dancing and talking together. It's like they're both copying each other without getting annoyed. Kelly's family must be so honored and so proud to see some cartoon characters dancing with the famous Gene Kelly.
I can honestly say that i saw Mr. kelly and Jerry dance before family guy on A tom and Jerry dvd:)
Heck yeah! Me too!
David R. Yeah Me Too
What's the DVD called
Blue sparkle time Fedora it's originally from a very famous movie called anchors aweigh with Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra
Same here!
One of my favorite Family Guy skits. Introduced me to Gene Kelly. I've got a few Gene Kelly movies in my Netflix queue now.
Imagine the dance I’m going to have to do to get our security deposit back
Gene Kelly...Seth McFarlane. Genius.
No. Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera genius. Not MacFarlane.
THANK you Yosef! I hate how people think he is a god. Macfarlane at BEST is an IMITATOR at worse a RIP OFF ARTIST> Stewie is stolen from Jimmy COrrigan
oh stfu
This was great. Seth Macfarlane & Co. did an aboslutely marvelous job editing it with Stewie.
I mean they basically had to redo it. I don't think it was a simple paste over, I think they got the film out of archive from WB and did their own animation on top of the original film.
@@MatchstickMan You can actually somewhat see Jerry's reflection on the floor so it's probably just pasted over. Not trying to undermine the amount of effort given for this dance number though
@Kuribo Are you sure that's Jerry? It looks like it's still Stewie to me.
Plus, there's a lot of angles where Jerry was taller than Stewie and there's no obvious doctored frames.
@@MatchstickMan Thank you for reminding me about this scene. It's still absolutely marvelous 13 years later!
@@Demonmagnos this is literally a time capsule on TH-cam 😂😂 is life what you thought it was gonna be?
Thanks to seth mcfarlane for putting dance numbers and big band swing and sing alongs in family guy. I love that he can show the new generation of old Hollywood. I love everytime stewie and Brian do a sing a long. Love this so much too
It’s amazing really, family guy has a monumental soundtrack
@@XSlimSxadyX Seth Macfarlane's assembled Orchestra (for Family Guy, American Dad, and other projects) is so legendary, that when they lose a member to old age, you look up the person's resume and it's 50 years and hits massive amounts of popular, lounge and jazz acts. It's a supergroup.
@@jasonscott526 he only got the best
This was actually some really good music!
1:31 I don't know why but I love this part
It's surreal to see a Family Guy character animated so fluidly
nice job with the video (the 2 split screens), thanks
Great video. I can't imagine having that kind of energy. Gene Kelly's dancing always looked so fun & effortless.
He was undoubtedly one of the greatest dancers who ever lived, dude was just insanely talented
My favourite Family Guy "joke" is where they word for word/frame for frame recreate something that was made way before them with minimal or zero changes and then act like it's a joke
The first time saw this scene in family I screamed for my mom to come see. We were both just awestruck by the reference.
Ok I just noticed this but the animated jerry with a reflection on the floor while this is happening… this is amazing
I wanna know how the family guy animators got the raw footage of that dance so they didn't have to photoshop Jerry out of every frame
It’s amazing how the one with family guy one looks like they cleaned up the footage and made it looked more clear
While yes it was copied, I grew up watching and loving Gene Kelly, while growing up I never related to anyone because no one else had ever heard of him. For a cartoon in today's time bring in wonderful music such as this and a great dancer as Gene Kelly is outstanding.
not a fan of family guy, but I admit this was probably one of my favorite clips from that show. it's amazing
this is just cute
one of my favorite moments in family guy! i wonder if it's the same team of animators that did the Disney segment one of the time machine episodes!
If family guy ever has a movie, I can imagine the animation being as smooth as this one
When I saw this on Family Guy I had a huge grin on my face the whole time. It's so cute!
I always loved this scene in family and wondered why it always looked so damn familiar now I know why!!! saw it as a kid. thanks for posting! been bugging me for years lol
I love how it matches up exactly at the right time
This first is a classic, a legend, a masterpiece in the cinema history. And the second is a very well done work. Both amazing.
Family Guy is awesome for appreciating such an awesome dancer such as Gene Kelly.
I like that they added reflections for Jerry, that must have taken a lot of time to do that.
I never knew this Family Guy skit was a parody/reference. It's so well, incredibly made.
It’s so great that the actor came back all these years to do it again with Stewie
Im not sure how or why, but this just warms my 20 year old heart.
I got to give Gene Kelly credit he's got the moves.
The old animation looks just as if not MORE lively. That’s amazing
Aww, this brings back memories. Seeing the reference side by side is just really cool.
I'd have to say that special effects, technology, and animation's come a pretty long way.
With the hindsight of knowing the technological leaps and bounds they had to do to make things like 'Who framed Roger Rabbit' *work* in a realistic 3D space, Seeing this and how they were able to do with a *minimal* amount of effort in the formoer production, it's pretty astounding. Imagine how many takes he had to do to get the timing, and imagined positioning down right.
did..Did Jerry just...talk?

Wow there both so awesome! I just love how Family Guy used this, its nice seeing Gene Kelly being seen still today on tv
Gene Kelly, the wonderful actor and great Dancer and Singer turns 107 in heaven today. Stewie, jerry and I send thousand greetings.
gene kelly's imagination must have been incredible. i can't help but believe he's really dancing with a partner.
The reanimation by the Family Guy team is flawless.
Gene Kelly rules at dancing
Geez, alot of cancer in this comment section. For those who are mad about the Family Guy version, get over yourselves.

Yes, while im not a huge fan of family guy, I think what they did here was really awesome
i love Gene Kelly's movies!!!
he is so talented and full of life
Thanks for putting these side by side. It's interesting to watch.
I really have to give Seth MacFarlane props for this. I'm 20 years old, and if wasn't for this I never would have discovered Gene Kelley. Stewie looked unbelievably cute in this video btw.
GREAT job putting these together!!! EXTREMELY impressive!!! At the risk of "Being that guy" That's "Freaking Awesome!!!" ;)

This was wonderful back then, and it is still wonderful while re-made for Family Guy,
When I was I was younger I thought this was dumb and boring when I saw it on family guy, now I think it's still a little silly, but also cool at the same time.
Funny how things change.
There were a lot of opportunities here in which they could've added some off-color visual gag. I am SOOOO grateful they left it as is.
A wonderful tribute to one of the best moments is musicals. Thank you for sharing.
I can’t imagine how excited Seth was to see the final product
the reflection of stewie is still jerry
Who would've thought that gene would still now the whole dance 60 years later. And still look so young.
I can't stop watching it too! I feel like crying at the end everytime...
I Wish I Could Dance With Gene Kelly With Sylvester...
Jacobean Knowles-alot That's not nice!!!
Tom Cat Don't worry, I'm here for you.
Tom i want to beat you senseless
Do have a mouse to Catch?!?!?!?!??!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I wish Stewie, Jerry, SpongeBob, and Sylvester should dance with Gene Kelly.
I love the music the whole way through. So fun and catchy
This is so amazing! I've been watching this over and over again learning the steps then dancing in my living room! I have yet to make up my mind regarding who's better (Astaire or Kelly). IT DOESN'T MATTER DOES IT?! I wouldn't be a dancer at all without their inspiration! KELLY & ASTAIRE! LEGENDS! THE BEST! FOREVER!
Thank you for posting this.
Gene kelly is my relative. good to see you Eugene :D
That's cool! =D
NO WAY
Happy 100th anniversary to Warner Bros. Studios & The Walt Disney Company! Also. R.I.P. Gene Kelly, Willam Hanna & Joseph Barbera.
No one dances better than Gene Kelly he is the master.
What I think separated Family Guy in its early days was Mcfarlenes love for early Hollywood and classical music. I will always remember the “Conway Twitty) bitz
Gene Kelly moves are really legendary!
I don't see this mentioned anywhere but it was supposed to be Mickey Mouse but Disney nixed that idea. My source is a Documentary included on the Blu Ray of An American in Paris about Gene Kelly's career.
So neat...watching this right now on TV, actually. (Thank you, DVR. :P) But it's really cool to see how the original clip with Jerry looks alongside the one with Stewie. Would've been better if they could've gone the extra step and fixed the Jerry's reflection on the floor so it was Stewie's, but that's okay--this was still really amazing :)
It was much harder to create this illusion in the early 1940's than it was to re-create it in the 2000's. That should be remembered here.
You have to give Family Guy credit for showing this stuff, and many others, to new generations. Bet many people found about Gene Kelly thanks to set McFarlane.
I saw the version with Stewie the other day and couldn't get rid of the thought that I had seen Mr Kelly do the same dance with some other animation character. I'm so glad I found this video)
i knew this all along. my dad bought a tom and jerry dvd and it had this in it. then on youtube I saw it with stewie and I knew it was the same thing. I WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG!!!
lol he really did that whole dance by him self and had the mindset that some 1 was with him the whole time amazing
Man dude thanks alot for posting!!!!
Gene Kelly is so amazing!
We're doing Singin' in the Rain this year for the musical. I'm really exctied to see how our lead does during the famous scene!
Gene Kelly, you're a beast.
The only time jerry actually talked.
I'm amazed by his atheleticism
Omg this unlocked a very beautiful memory :"). Now that im older i can really appreciate more the work done in this one 💖
Man, Gene Kelly was such a great entertainer and actor
I saw the Gene Kelly and Jerry dancing scene once when I was really little (2008ish) and never saw it again. Was damn near convinced it was a weird fever dream I had.
2:05 - 2:12
I'm pretty Gene is screaming in his head,
"BURNING QUADS, BURNING QUADS, BURNING QUADS."
One thing I think is a neat mark of how animation has progressed is Stewie has a shadow and reflection in the floor while Jerry doesn’t. Just goes to show the small modifications made over time to the craft.
Jerry does have a reflection look again
They should've done the last part with Stewie
