    Great vid Thom. I've been checking out a lot of Audition videos and your vid is tops in my book. I'm new to Audition and was hoping you could clarify something for me. When I bring in a RAW audio file, what is the best order to apply effects to the audio? Do I compress, EQ and normalize before adding FX's? Or do I add those first and then compress, EQ and normalize? Thanks for the great vid. Hope to see more from ya.

    • @gibsonedu
      @gibsonedu  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey MrChiprocks. There's different workflows (mine has even changed since this video). I generally normalize, EQ, then compress, mainly because most of my EQ is cutting frequencies so I cut them so I'm not compressing those frequencies. But another argument could be said that you compress and then cut so that way you're making sure those frequencies are out. Experiment with good headphones; reorder the effects and see which you like :) But yes, I do the compress, EQ, and normalize before any other effects. Another good TH-camr to follow is Mike Russell; his channel is all about audio engineering with Audition.

    • @MrChiprocks1

      Hey Thom, thanks for the fast reply....and thanks for the tip on Compress,EQ and Normalize before FX's. Yeah, I've seen a few of his videos which are really good. But I think this video in particular is the best I've seen. Looking forward to more content from ya.

    That dynamics processing noise gate before the scientific filter (high pass). Is that the same thing as a downward expander. Would I need the scientific filter with the expander as well?

    • @gibsonedu

      Not sure on the downward expander, may need to find a TH-cam video on that.

    • @gibsonedu

      For making quieter things quiet you want to use a gate (it mutes things unless they're louder than a certain level). Here's a video on how gates work - th-cam.com/video/gErFoJc7tzk/w-d-xo.html

    Great video. Thank you very much.

    • @gibsonedu
      @gibsonedu  ปีที่แล้ว

      Try a few different places in the chain and see how you like the sound. If the difference is too subtle to hear, you can try cranking of the noise reduction level temporarily and then see the difference of it's impact if it's early in the chain vs late in the chain to help you decide.

  • @AtomizedSound
    @AtomizedSound 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, I’ve heard different sides to this but why didn’t you start with noise reduction as the very first thing in the editing process and then desser and so on? Some say if you apply all the other processing before noise reduction first you will just add whatever noise is on that track and boost it or get it mixed in with your other processing

    • @gibsonedu
      @gibsonedu  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, tons of different ways of doing it. Noise reduction is generally something that takes more time (you have to sample a certain quiet point, then run the noise reduction, then fine tune it) so this chain is showing a way where you just turn on the effects and you're good to go.

  • @briankirchoff-thevoiceover424
    @briankirchoff-thevoiceover424 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Nice clip Thom. My only comment related to processing is the old cliche "less is more". It's easy to over process. I avoid all the end-processing steps you describe in great detail by recording in ProTools with an aux track with four pre set real-time waves plugins, then I edit in Audition. I loved Cool Edit Pro long before Adobe bought it years back and rebranded it as Audition. I've always found it easier to edit in than ProTools. I'd use Audition to record, but the program doesn't allow for plug ins in the live recording chain. Thanks for the post!

    • @gibsonedu
      @gibsonedu  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Brian, thanks so much for the feedback. Love hearing from a seasoned vet as yourself :) I used Pro Tools a lot back in college (studied sound recording technology) but only have Audition these days. I see you just started your TH-cam channel! Way to bust out of the gate with uploading a huge handful of videos in that first week! Looking forward to checking those out.

  • @nomy006

    Do I have to do all that in the waveform mode? I'm worried about destructively editing my source files.

    • @gibsonedu
      @gibsonedu  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good concern. Maybe you can duplicate the waveform and work on the duplicated. Keep the naming convention easy to find them like VOJob_Proc (for processed) and VOJob_Raw.

    • @nomy006
      @nomy006 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thom Gibson Is that what you do? Or most people do for this type of editing? I'm used to editing in programs like Reaper or Logic Pro which are all non-destructive and I can't seem to find a real benefit to doing it destructively. It seems like more time spent making copies of files just to get some functionality out of noise reduction programs. Reaper has a non destructive version of noise cancelling that has been working decently enough.

    • @gibsonedu
      @gibsonedu  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't do that for the same reasons (don't want to make copies).
      You could work in the multi-track form and put the effects on the rack and export out that way, I just prefer the waveform editor a lot more and there isn't a way to export out of there with the effects on w/out destructively applying them to the waveform.

    Normalise first? NnnnnnOOOOOOooooooo! :D

    • @gibsonedu
      @gibsonedu  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha! Why do you normalize at the end? To ensure you’re not amplifying I desired frequencies to begin with?

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@gibsonedu the normalisation is simple scaling of a waveform. And Your scaling will be dependant on the SINGLE highest peak of your track - it's not controlled, you may end with different scaling of the waveform - each time.
      I just assume that normalisation could be good for short, very quiet sounds like from instruments, for sound design.
      But if You have long tracks with voice over, and You use the same mic...maybe some little different distances - You might want a more intelligent approach. I am not super professional in audio engineering, but my chain for my tourism guide narration processing is following(all free stuff)-
      Noise reduction >> TDR Nova(simple dynamic eq) >> Tonmann Deesser >> TDR Kotelnikov(Compressor) >> LoudMax(limiter).
      I make first gain with TDR Nova as much as I need to reach -3db - but I do with output product of dynamic eq, which already rises volume as I pop out or limit needed frq.... but last one gains and evens out - but evens as much as I like, it can be too much and artificial.
      But You don't want to just scale first(each time by uncontrolled scale) and scale all noise with it - clean first, then maybe it can be limiter or another gain tool which works with your volume intelligently, not just scale all the inequality in your audio. That's why I(for example) am using dynamic eq...first You wanna control all pops and all to quite frq - to make Your track more even.... for me it's like a limiter, but automatically situational. Some use dyn.eq several times, for different purposes and frequencies - probably it could give an even better result. But my audioguides should not be so tidy.
