  • Nissan X-trail 2017 | stop start system fault easy fix.
    So today our car developed a problem. When I tried to start the car I was greeted wit a lot of noise from under the bonnet and all my interior and exterior lights started flickering and the message (Stop - Start System Failure) lit up on the dash. Both my keys were eventually showing as (not recognised) by the vehicle aswell.
    So after searching for hours in forums for a fix and after trying to problem solve from the Nissan manual I found that the battery was effectively drained and had to charge it. Here's how I did it.

    I had the same issue with my 2015 X-Trail T-32 and even after the battery change, the dashboard error remains. I tried every possible solution I found on the internet but wasn't able to clear the failure message. After I disconnect the minus connector from the battery for 30 mins, the failure message disappears and the start-stop system starts to work without problem.

      3 months ago my 2015 xtrail went in for some body work. I got the car back and after a day I noticed the clock was out by about an hour. I pulled up at some traffic lights and the car suddenly stopped (which shocked me because my stop/start had not been working for over 2 years). I deduced that the battery being disconnected for a long period of time had reset the stop/start system. As I say that was 3 months ago and the stop/start is still working..........which is a bloody pain because I live in London and there are traffic lights everywhere!!!

    Had this issue today with my X-Trail. Called the breakdown people. I would have put money on the battery being the issue. He tested the battery which was found to be okay. He did find there was a drain on the battery, however it will need further investigation to resolve the issue. For the short term I've bought a booster pack to keep in the car.

    Thanks for your vid, this happened to me this afternoon, I had replaced the battery for the key just recently, as a message came up telling me low battery, I didn't equate the message to the car battery. Fortunately, I was parked in my own driveway, after watching your vid and following your instructions, I jump started the car with a V8, which happened to be nearby. I am now charging the battery with a charger, so I can drive to a battery seller tomorrow, for installation. This is a 2017 manual Qashqai.

    Hi, you should never put the black gun/clamp in your negative battery pole due to you are in risk of damage the intelligent charging sensor. Negative gun/clamp must go to the chassis, never to your negative pole. This applies to all the start & stop vehicles.
    I'm happy to see you've solved the problem but don't do it again. Remember: black direct to chassis.

    I've had this exact issue with my T32 Xtrail too. It's such a crap car - had loads of electrical issues with it since day one. Stop/start fault failure, AC has a leak and takes £70 of gas per Summer to fill or have Nissan find the leak it's had since it was built because they won't touch it now. The clutch judders like crazy when it's damp - this is an old condensation on the clutch issue from the Qashqai which Xtrails also suffer with, the roof drain holes clog too easily and cause the foot wells to flood so I've to remove all 4 foot well drain plugs from under the car, the panoramic roof fails to open on a single attempt and needs to be activated multiple times and finally, the 4x4 clutch useless if you need to use the car in the snow (I had this optional extra from the factory)
    I've had Nissan's since my 1984 Datsun Sunny but I think I'm going to trade this is now for an F Pace and grab my pipe and slippers.

      @@Cleggaz no idea as of yet, had the battery checked out by kwikfit and they gave it a 95% positive reading, the only thing i can think of is i purchased a usb phone charger that i suspected might be the cause, i stopped using it when i had the power drain, not had any issues since then...its booked into Nissan in a few weeks time.

      @Cleggaz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool, well at least you seem to have found the main issue. Fingers crossed theres no underlying faults, good luck.

    Disagree! just happened to me, 2017 X-trail 2.0 auto awd. pulled up just before going onto our drive (up steep ramp) and engine stopped under the stop start annoying thing, the car went to restart as i released the brake to pull onto drive (after a 50 mile run in good daylight warm weather with stop start working fine). as i lifted the brake it went to restart and failed like in the video, I did release brake quickly and the car had rolled back a bit before it had time to try and restart but it then threw its toys out of the pram. I put a battery test load cell across battery and it was showing flat! managed to jump using another car as well as a power pack and it just about started up. parked car up 30 seconds later and turned off, It then restarted on the button multiple times after, Load tested battery and perfect! it seems like there was a permanent heavy load on battery and once restarted it was ok again! I need to do further investigation me thinks, this car was stuck as well and unable to move at all.

    • @julian54801
      @julian54801 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Update: if this fault happens again (which it hasn't yet) , I suspect the action of disconnecting the battery should clear the fault (Theory to be proven), So i am carrying the battery load testing tool in the car + Power pack and some spanners.
      A bit more detail on when the fault occurred. The battery load tool gave me a draw down to 7 volts with the 1.5 Ohm short applied, this is very low, it should be between 10 and 12 v with load applied. Once it started and then turned of again, all within 30 seconds the draw down way back up to 11.5 to 12 v, there is no way a battery can recover this quick, hence why suspect power draw in the car, If it goes away after disconnection or restart, i can understand why people can go with defective battery, ie remove old one, fit new one and it start! (battery could have ended up flat anyway if load was on car for 10+ minutes or so) There could be some form of load protection inside the battery giving the low cranking amps, but i highly doubt that (over load switch inside a box full of Acid and hydrogen gas!!!).

    Similar problem. The other day my X-trail Diesel Auto 2015 would not start. The dashboard stated that the proximity sensors were sensing an object too close to my car. The stop/start error was also shown on the dashboard. Stop/Start has not been working for months so I just usually cancel the error message. The red symbol (key within a car) was also shown. I tried starting the car with a portable charger but that did not work. I tried with jump leads but that did not work. I could not open the boot and my key fob seemed not to work. I changed the battery on the key fob but it still not seem to work. I then disconnected/connected the neg lead on the battery and tried again. It still did not start, but I did notice that the proximity warning had disappeared. I tried to start the car so many times that the battery completely failed. I locked the drivers door with the key, but then noticed that the other doors were unlocked. A couple of mins later the security kicked in and the central locking locked the other doors. I left the car for 2 hours and tried jump starting it with my Wifes car VW up (small car). It started straight away!
    Conclusion: I believe that the there is a dead cell in the battery. This affects the operation of stop/start. However, in this case I believe the cars computer got its knickers in a twist and immobilised the car. If this happens again I would check that my mobile phone was not anywhere near the car (believe it or not it could be transmitting a signal that could interfere with the key fob and the car). I would disconnect/connect the neg battery wire. I would leave the car for approx. 1 hour. Then try restarting. Thanks for the video by the way!!

      Hey Sean, Sorry it's taken a while to reply. I spoke to Nissan over the phone recently about the stop/start issue and they said the issue could be from resting my foot on the clutch pedal while driving (I do this a lot) and because the clutch is what tells the stop/start to kick in that it may have malfunctioned somewhere down the line so I'm wondering what allows it to activate in an automatic vehicle. I always thought it was the brake & parking brake that sent the signal. Might be another avenue to explore.

      @Cleggaz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, that isn't an issue I have encountered myself but I'm sure somebody out there has. The only real issue I have with my boot door not opening is when the electric parking brake hasn't applied itself properly. The parking brake has to be fully engaged for the boot door to activate which is great so you can investigate and make sure it's applied properly especially on a gradient. Maybe your issue could be battery-related or the gas struts could be faulty. Let me know if you find out. Thanks for your comment 😀

    It’s not start stop fix it’s charging battery car start

      The problem showing on the dash is a 'Stop Start System Fault' and maybe in most cases a simple re-charge of the battery will fix it.

      Powiedzmy sobie szczerze to błąd projektantów Nissan - > auto ładuje się przy bardzo niskim naładowania akumulatora. Wystarczy dać dwa rezystory na przewodach "-" do komputera od akumulatora i akumulator będzie zawsze się ładował podczas jazdy. Do dupy to eco.

    Hey buddy... Can't stand the qashqai, we have one, the charging port next to the gear keeps running when it's off and locked. Use the one inside the lift up hand rest compartment. That switches off after about 30 seconds 👍
